    I very much appreciate your reassuring, encouraging but also professional guidance. After missing three periods I naively thought I was "home and dry," but not so. I am now armed with the necessary advice to prepare me for the next few years of change. Many thanks. And by the way, that's a beautiful scarf.

    Thank you this is so comprehensive. I am going through a combination of these scenarios and now my period is 6 months late. I also have fibroids & the doctor's advice was just to leave it until menopause sets in & then it will no longer be an issue. If the period returns would the regularity be delayed from now on?

      Hi Candee
      Although prolonged and/or heavy bleeding is quite common at the start of the menopause, it is not good for you and can eventually cause anaemia. This in turn can cause fatigue, low mood, and sleep problems, so it is important to see your doctor. They may also check for polyps, fibroids or a prolapse as these can also be a factor.

      Hi Michael
      Frequent periods are quite common as the approach to the menopause but they are not good for you and could quickly cause anaemia. Yes, it is best to see your doctor as they can test your iron levels and also make sure that the bleeding is not being caused by other factors such as fibroids.

      I am 44 and have been dealing with this for about 3 years now, my periods have been increasing in intensity and seriously thought it was probably bc of hormones and the missing periods and probably the lining of the uterus getting thicker bc of all that, but I was recently diagnosed with a fibroid, so if you have the chance just go get checked by your doctor to rule out any other condition 😉 definitely not a fun stage in life, it has to give us its last hurrah I guess 😁

    I’ve just started having a light bleed that’s more dark than bright blood. Tiny amount for 9 days with some very minor cramping. Previously I had gone 12 months August gone without a period. Spoke to my Dr and he said it could be a sign of cancer and I need an ultrasound.
    This has distressed me greatly and I’m now thinking the worst, how can two months over the 12 month abstinence make such a difference. I’m 51.

      Hi Julia
      From our experience, having had similar questions from many women on this over the years, this does seem quite common, however, we do also advise getting a check up from the doctor too which, I am glad to see, you have done. Your doctor is probably just being cautious, which is great as we do hear of women, in this situation, being completely ignored. I am, however, shocked about how blunt they were and the fact that this has been really upsetting and worrying for you!
      Hopefully, the ulratsound will be fine and put your mind at rest. Do let me know how you get on.

      @@jessie9653 Hello Jessica, thank you for asking. I had a scan and I have a lesion on my left ovary about 4cm. The gynaecologist said he’s 95% it’s a benign burnt out endometriotic cyst which I think is a blood filled cyst. However he suggested I have my ovary removed as it may turn into cancer in 5-10 years time. However I told him I do not want to lose my ovary as they are very important so he suggested a watch and wait so I have another scan in April. Since the last scan in January I have given up dairy, sugar and wheat I am eating a mainly plant based organic diet with wild salmon. I’m taking chasteberry , kelp and a selection of herbs and supplements to hopefully shrink the cyst. I’ve spent many hours researching ovarian cysts and the general consensus is they can be shrunk. I’ve also lost a stone as I understand fat around the belly stores not do good estrogen which will feed the cyst. I’m doing daily exercise on a rebounder to get the lymph system moving and walks in the fresh air. I hope it’s smaller when I go in April.
      Any other advice would be appreciated if you have any knowledge of this type of cyst.

      Although this can happen as you approach the menopause it is important to get it checked out properly by your doctor. If they refuse then ask to see another doctor.

    I am 49 years old with adenomyosis . My periods have been like hell since I was diagnosed 4 and a half years ago. I am waiting to have my op (UAE) but because of covid19 my hospital is reluctant to see patients. My periods from the start to the start is roughly 25 to 28 days and lasts a week but last month my period only lasted 3 days! Then I started again on 21st July and finished on 2nd August. I had period for 2 weeks! After a few days I started again this morning. I have severe pain during and after my periods, I can’t eat and if I do I throw it all up. My periods are so heavy that I flood. I am on heavy medications which I know isn’t good for me. I called my dr several times but all they say is to wait for the hospital to get in touch. Could the last 3 irregular periods be a sign of the approaching menopause? Please reply I am losing my mind and hope! Thank you.

      Hi Nahid
      It is possible, we do know that changing hormones, as you approach the menopause, can make existing period problems worse. You could ask your pharmacist for a product called Tranexamic Acid which is used to help with prolonged or heavy periods and this may give you some relief until you can see your doctor.
      Heavy blood flow can also cause anaemia so it might be a good idea to also ask your pharmacist for a gentle iron tonic; this may give you a little bit of a boost.

      Hi Shantel
      Breast discomfort in the peri-menopause is very common. You may find a kelp supplement helpful and remember to drink lots of plain water as dehydration can be a big factor and can also contribute to anxiety!
      You could also take a magnesium supplement approx 200mg twice a day for the anxiety as well.

      Having two periods in a month, although common at this stage, can cause low iron which can cause fatigue, low mood anxiety and possibly lower immunity so it may be a good idea to get your iron levels checked just in case you need an iron tonic. :)

      Periods can often come back after a year or so without any and may be due to a hormone blip but it is wise just to get it checked out by your doctor. They can make sure other issues such as fibroids, polyps or a prolapse are not responsible for the bleed.

      There can be a number of reasons for prolonged periods, such as a hormonal imbalance, fibroids or even a prolapse. If your relative is finding that the tablets are not helping her then it is really important for her to go back to her doctor and let them know. They may be able to prescribe a different medication or investigate further why this is happening.

      Hi Diane
      Changing hormones can often indicate the approach to the menopause but the only way you can find out for sure if you can still get pregnant would be to ask your doctor for hormone tests to check your fertility level.

      some women have irregular periods/missed periods when they are young. Not menopause but it can happen, particularly if you are stressed or exercising a lot.

      stress, poor diet and unbalanced hormones can cause it. You are most likely NOT going through menopause

    Im in menopause and my periods stop 2 yrs ago and i started bleeding the other day is this normal.

      @AvogelCoUk  5 років тому +2

      Hi Louise
      This is unlikely to be hormone related after all this time unless you have started HRT or other hormonal medication so it is important to get this checked out by your doctor. There could be a number of reasons such as fibroids or a prolapse so a proper diagnosis is vital.

      Hi Sharon
      Periods coming back after all this time is quite common but we do still advise just checking with your doctor too. Other issues such as fibroids, polyps/cysts or a prolapse can trigger bleeding so your doctor can just make sure these are not a factor.

      @AvogelCoUk  2 роки тому

      Hi Annet
      You are not considered safe from pregnancy until you've not had any periods for 2 years. If periods return before that, in theory, there is a possibility so it is wise to still use contraceptives of some kind. It is also a good idea to see your doctor about this return of a period just to rule out other factors such as fibroids, polyps/cycts etc.

      @AvogelCoUk  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Beatriz
      Yes, this can happen and is usually just the way your hormones are starting to change but if this continues it is best to check with your doctor just in case there are other issues such as fibroids or a prolapse triggering the bleeding.

    I am 49 in a few days. I am passing huge clots and bleeding for two weeks. Had cycle twice the last two months. Got tested two months ago and was normal for my levels but now, two months later, I'm really concerned 😟

      Hi Krishna
      It is important to get back to your doctor as they may be able to give you something to stop the bleeding, otherwise have a chat with your pharmacist as there are over the counter medications such as Tranexamic Acid that may be helpful for you.

      Hi Nisupta
      If you are bleeding then it is best to avoid yoga unless your teacher advises appropriate postures. Prolonged bleeding can cause anaemia, which in turn can cause fatigue so it may be a good idea to ask your doctor to test your iron levels, just in case you need an iron supplement.
