  • Enjoy this mesmerizing CFM56 engine takeoff sound during a sub-freezing winter day in Chicago. We were given an intersection departure, thus did not have the entire runway to use - so we had to increase the amount of power on takeoff to make up for it, thus creating a wonderful engine sound. Turn up the volume!

Good video! It's called fan buzz. Tips of the fan going supersonic. More pronounced at lower temperatures, since the speed of sound is lower than on hot days.

@@maxenroute Singles do it, too. If it's below freezing, you can hear the props of Bonanzas and the like crackle when going by on takeoff.

@@joshgutierrez7380 It's nice for people who don't know. Even I knew how the buzz was generated, but I never knew that the sound was more pronounced at lower temps which is pretty cool.

The "ROAR" you hear from those CFM56-7Bs is called "buzzsaw" noise. It's the result of the fan spinning at supersonic speeds. Newer and larger engines with higher bypass ratios don't have as much buzzsaw noise because when the fan blades exceed the speed of sound, it puts tremendous stress on the fan blades and greatly reduces the engine's efficiency.

It is always wonderful to see when the aircraft hits Vr by the wings flexing up due to lift.

If the background white noise wouldn’t be, it would definitely be THE best sounding on UA-cam.

Wow! Thank-you so very much for sharing this experience with us! I came by your video through my subscription to the morning news feed from “FlightAware”. I’m one of those who cannot get enough commercial airplane viewing. Furthermore, I also decided to become your #6 subscriber, *So Please Keep These Videos Coming!*
I am old enough to remember flights on the 737-100’s/200’s, and I distinctly remember my last flight on a 200 variant. I’d have to say that between my second to last and last flight on this variant was about 15 years. In the interim, I had many flights on the 737 with the CFM engines and had become used to how quiet they were. So when they started the older P&W JT8D’s on my last flight, the noise practically threw me back a couple of rows. Since the aircraft was not full, I began my flight forward of the engines and had the pleasure of watching again those magnificent blow-in doors (auxiliary air intakes, or whatever people want to call them) in operation again. I remember that I almost had to shout at the flight attendant for her to hear me. While enroute, I moved to a seat behind the engines in order to see the clamshell reversers operate upon landing. I sat at the window, and in order for the flight attendant to hear me, she had to bend over to the middle seat, and both of us had to shout in order to be heard. To the chagrin of some, I am one of those who long for the days of no noise and smoke abatement, just because I lean towards being nostalgic.
One other aspect of your video that harkens me back is your flight from Chicago to Newark. My very first commercial jet flight was on an American Airlines’ CV-990A from Chicago to Newark. I guess it is true what they say, “You always remember your first love.” Hence, that is why I adopted my tag name for “UA-cam”.
Again, thank-you for sharing this video with us, and thank-you for refreshing my memories of my past experiences as a passenger on these aircraft. I am looking forward to your next post. By the way, would you please add some information about yourself under your “About” tab on your home page? I’m always curious about the experiences of those to whom I have subscribed.
