  • The area of Big Bell started to see gold miners in the late 1800s and so in due course Big Bell was founded in the early 1900s as prospectors struck gold in the area. Today the hotel and a few buildings remain with some points of interest to read and explore. Located about 30ks west of Cue along a well maintained road it is well worth a visit.

I have visited some of the outskirts towns in my few years in Australia. Paraburdoo, Silverton, Broken Hill, Polpah Station, etc. This video is very interesting for me. Thanks mate.

Someone salvaged nearly every stick of wood from that hotel. I wouldn't be surprised if that bar still exists somewhere. The windows, the doors, the wall coverings, and the flooring are all in a building or two somewhere as well. Would be interesting to find it. It didn't burn because there would be far more damage to the structure. The chimneys are intact and the iron isn't warped.

Our family trips have included trips to Big Bell a couple of times. It existed for around 22 years and is fascinating to walk around, imagining the town in its hay day. Well worth the visit and not far from one of the largest Wandjina aboriginal art galleries in the world. The town of Cue is also quite an historical town, well worth stopping for a night or two. Thanks for the vid.

I worked around that area some 45 years ago now, the local rumours going around then was that once the hotel or pub was built and opened the publican nailed the doors open and said that the pub would never close, so it may have been open 24 / 7 for a lot of years but it is closed now, it was great times back then in that part of the country.

I just spoke with him, and he says that his Aunt died unexpectedly "Aunt is buried in either Davyhurst or Menzies", They couldn't find her grave site to put a marker on it as the authorities failed to record the location.
They'd been roo, camel hunting and prospecting up near Mekathara, that and Dad was visiting his lady friend that owned the bar. She passed several days prior, while they were away.
