We are located in the center of the #Mediterranean in Sicily. On its east coast and underneath #Europe’s biggest and most active volcano, #Etna, lies a city that will amaze you. In today's episode we travel to Catania, the so called #black #city of 300,000 inhabitants.
It was founded by the Ancient Greeks almost 3 millennia ago and its name was #Katane, which means “sharp stones”. The native population was rapidly #Hellenised and Catania soon became a brilliant jewel of the ancient #world.
#Romans, #Byzantines, #Arabs, #Normans and #Spaniards have left their mark on the area
Behind every step of today’s visitors there are plenty of important #events and long history that have contributed to our #modern #society. Catania is a fun #low-cost #destination, offering quality time and many #exploration options.
The heart of the city is #Piazza #Duomo, a huge main square that you will love. U #Liotru is the volcanic #Elephant of Catania placed over the #fountain. The statue is most likely a prehistoric sculpture that was reforged during the Byzantine Era, a protective #talisman against enemies.
Next to it stands the imposing #Cathedral and Sant’ #Agatha.
La #Fontana dell #Amenano is a baroque fountain with mythical figures.
Behind it we find the #Fish #Market, one of the top attractions of Catania, combining the #bazaars of the east with the Sicilian culture.
From Piazza Duomo begins the famous #Via #Etnea, the 3 km long main road in the historic center of Catania. It was built at the end of the 17th century following the disastrous #earthquake of 1693. Many #palaces in the Sicilian Baroque style are built here, including Seven churches. Today is the main #commercial street that will fascinate you.
In Piazza #Universita lies Catania University, the oldest in Sicily, and the #elefantino colorato.
Next stop, piazza #Stesicoro. On the one hand a beautiful statue of Vincenzo #Bellini, a well known #Italian #opera composer, called also the swan of Catania, and on the other, the roman #amphitheatre.
At a close distance lies #Villa Bellini park, a green oasis in Catania!
From Piazza Duomo, with west direction start two of the main streets of the city. Via #Vittorio #Emmanuele, leading to the #Teatro #Greco of the city and Via Garibaldi with its emblematic arch #Porta #Garibaldi.
Not far away lies #Castello #Ursino, a royal castle and Museum. The surrounding neighbourhood is interesting.
Finally Via #Crociferi, a thrilling medieval scenery of Catania.

Speaking of lifetime experiences, lets discover Etna, this terrific volcano! Mount Etna, already part of #UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is one of the world's most active volcanoes and is in an almost constant state of activity. According to both Greek and Roman mythology, the god #Vulcan (Greek: #Hephaestus) had his blacksmithing forge under mount Etna.
