Scotland: Why are so many people dying from drug use?

- Опубліковано 21 лис 2024
- Sky News' Connor Gillies looks at deaths from illegal drug use in Scotland, where people are 15 times more likely to die from narcotics use in deprived areas.
Analysis from Sky's Data and Forensics shows that almost four times as many people die in Scotland compared to the rest of Great Britain, with other European countries trailing behind.

for the past 50 years drugs have been a problem in Scotland, I have never used any illegal drug because it would have got in the way of my drinking, had my last drink on 17/09/2017, if alcohol was invented today it would be a Class "A" Drug. Some of my friends have asked me what is the hardest thing I have ever done so I thought about it for a wee while, I said well I have hiked the West Highland Way self sufficient and at speed to break the record, same with The Pennine Way, both were very hard, really hard, hiked over The Himalayas & The Rockies, ran half marathons in competitions with my best time 1Hr 22Mins 26Secs, one of the hardest runs I have ever done, never ever beat that time again, but the hardest thing I have ever done was to STOP DRINKING, I started late in life at 33 but I got hook very easily and it ruined me. (One Day At A Time) now 60 years old and Sober HELPING OTHERS.

Congratulations for being clean.

I am 17, never touched or drank a drop of alcohol. No plans on doing so either and I am fine with being teetotal. I have seen how it emasculates and destroys people's lives. I wouldn't take any other illicit drug, so why is alcohol socially acceptable?
My heart goes out to all sufferers. None of them wants to be in this situation
But they are.. I’m not in that situation.. it’s all about choices
Their own fault, they aint sufferers
But it’s ok to be a alcoholic? Cause alcoholism is a huge huge issue in Scotland
Many of them knew exactly what they were getting into, but went ahead anyway. Personally, I call it weakness. And I have absolutely no sympathy.
Some really nasty people in the comments who lack empathy and compassion. Before casting judgement maybe some research into addiction would help ye be more humane.
Same reasons alchol has always been a problem in Scotland.

The social worker at the end trashed the drug free re-hab! No surprise. They want people using drugs. It’s job security.
I didn’t think he trashed it ?
I used to mess about there at these places as a teenager in Dundee. Its bizarre and surreal that's its a junkie den now. The emergency services roar up and down my street all day long to get to that part of Dundee.
The fact is that a lot of rich people in Scotland (most of whom may be in positions of influence eg in Edinburgh) are very removed from the reality of those at the bottom and do not give a damn to know.
I think that's inaccurate. The ruling party in Edinburgh are well aware of Scotland's drug problem and they genuinely care about fixing it. But it's not an easy problem to solve. It requires tackling entrenched issues with education, mental health, welfare, housing, urban planning, culture, and an inadequate economic structure.
Also, it's uncomfortable for many people to talk about, but a big part of the problem is how accepting Scotland is towards drugs. We need to increase the stigma attached to the substances whilst decreasing the stigma attached to addicts themselves - the opposite of the current situation, where addicts are seen as losers but drugs in general are seen as cool and desirable.
We also should understand and combat the harmful influences of China, Iran and America, from where most of these drugs (or their chemical components) originate.
Because life is really depressing for too many people. That and legislation makes the whole thing a lot more dangerous than it needs to be.
But yet, the SNP will still be voted in power by the folks who couldn’t care less!!! never has the words wake up been more apparent!
@@Drizzle600 its the system labour tory whoever the situation at present would be the same this about an unfit system and life and death one of which a single politician nor party can take credit for
Absolutely gobsmacked I’ve worked in Dundee many times when coming north of the border found the people and place lovely admittedly it was a good few years ago how times have changed 😢
It's not that big a mystery really: it's a bog hole, and also there's no sunlight!
Its still the same. Addiction is everywhere.
There's still a lot of nice places and people in Dundee.
Because life for the poorest in this country isn't worth anything so its a escape from the terrible island this has become

my Scottish wife and father in law had / have addiction problems, they both were / are well off.
Ps. The quality and strength of the drugs is more deadly these days…
Got an advert for whiskey after this video, harmful addictions like drinking and smoking should also be targeted with a ban of advertising. Too many people use it as a pathway to drugs in Scotland.
This reminded me of Gorbals Glasgow of early 90s.
As a foreign Student at Glasgow for 4 years I feel so sad to Scotland public issues.
Such a lovely country and always in my heart, some of my best times in life at Glasgow.
Dundee in 1990s was a postcard in Summer months.
I hope the government steps in. My best wishes
Our government is a massive part of the problem. They keep cutting funding to services while blaming 'an ageing drug user population coming to an inevitable end' to cover for the incremental increase of drug related deaths. They simply do not care. Politicians are the lowest form of humanity.
The government DID step in. They brought a bill t9 decriminalise addiction and teat it as a health issue. Westminster overturned it.
The SG turned a blind eye to the clean-needle exchanges and vans where people could inject safely; the Tories in London instructed the Tories in Scotland to insist that the law is applied to the letter and banned the clean needle vans - hence the upsurge in amputations and deaths.
The hostel here which the woman says saved her life - these hostels are next to be targeted by England’s politicians.

Yes they do.
Britain is a desperate place at the moment. It is good those north of the border can now access the same treatment as those south.
The worst drugs, because they are legal and deadly, are alcohol and tobacco.
It was Glasgow that was named the worst place for drug deaths for the last few years
Dundee had the highest drug deaths in Europe
Was it no west Dunbartonshire
It's also now overtaken Glasgow as the most dangerous city.. Ironically it also has the most foreign people 😂
Yes it has been for the past years

They don't call it scumdee for nothing. Dundee used to be the teenage underage pregnancy capital too. It's a shame cause it's actually a cool city. The new museum and ship are a great visit but it seems it's always been quite troubled.
It’s because of the SNP incompetence

Boredom?
I can understand social-economic & home environments.. peer pressure, family history, depression and mental illness, etc
But boredom is really scraping the barrel !!!!
Get a hobby, work more hours or whatever.
Nothing to do with depression and addiction then eh,just "boredom"...???
I'm bored. Anyone got any fentanyl?
@@alderconesLol 😂
The reason people do not access treatment is that in Scotland if an ambulance turns up the police will also. The user gets criminalised! This is why many will not call ambulance for themselves!
Dundee, and every major city in Scotland has a drug problem. What's new?
Poverty, lack of opportunities, family break downs, lack of God consciousness leades people to loose hope and purpose to live
Yes true, but anyone with half a brain would understand taking drugs is only going to make your problems worse.
There is probably nothing to do up there- it’s that boring. Government needs to step in
Gee I dunno sky news maybe it's the depressing state of everything and struggling to afford to survive let alone thrive whilst getting zero help for mental and physical health. The UK is a shambles.

I moved from Greater Manchester to Edinburgh. Not much differemce in the weather actually. Sometimes it can be a bit colder but Edinburgh gets less rain
Could be the depressing weather.
I grew up in Scotland and can't cope with the weather there anymore.
Earlier this year I left Edinburgh at 9am, it was freezing cold and sideways rain. Got to Norwich by 4pm and there wasn't a cloud in the sky, everyone was in shorts and sunglasses drinking pints by the water etc. Felt like I'd ended up in Spain.
@@halfbakedproductions7887 the weather here in Edinburgh is particularly vile, that sharp wind we get coming over the Forth always ruins what was a nice day.
I don’t think I heard one reference to Opioid Substitution Treatment in this story. A bit strange given that it is regarded as the most effective modal of care/recovery…a broad range of substances are mentioned…stimulants etc…abstinence based approaches get a mention…it seems a conspicuous omission for a story like this.

Sitting on benefits bored, lack of ambition, poor educational standards, ingrained culture of substance abuse, and sometimes trauma in childhood. It's a complex issue but the SNP seem to be making things worse not better. Japan has a zero tolerance approach to hard drugs and as a result their drugs death numbers are tiny. Maybe we need to get tough to stop the cycle.
America also used to have zero tolerance policy. Didn't work quite the same way
@@beepboop9464 Drugs deaths have got worse in America, not better. Also the Police are pretty over stretched dealing with all the other ghetto crime. Japan is a safe orderly country with an efficient police force and justice system. The West could learn a lot from Japan.
The SNP brought a bill to decriminalise personal possession so that people could use clean-needle / safe injection vans and centres: the Tories overturned it at Westminster. Because we supply it?
Ok, so what’s the reason deaths statistics dropped recently?More Naloxone? More rehabs? Less drugs on the streets? Tougher law for possession?
Stop charging the earth for treatment then people who aren’t rich could access the help….
I mean if I had to live among scottish, I'd overdose myself as well
🤣🤣😂😂... So true,
People don't understand the upbringing these people have had I've had a tough upbringing nothing compared to being brought up by an addict
One question springs to mind, if these people are so poor, then how do they afford their habit? and if the answer is, by turning to crime, would it not then be better to buy food, and pay rent, bills etc, with the proceeds of said crime?
Weather is so great in Scotland you can not not do drugs
Is ANYONE asking WHY are they turning to drugs? Obviously as pain relief, to numb a psychological pain or trauma. Cant be down to poverty, as the "experts" say here. Neither can "access to treatment". THis film doesnt even mention access to psychotherapy/ talking therapies. I'm not an "expert" lol SNP minister, but all the local services seem to offer are overdose meds.
" See the pain, not the addiction" - DR Gabor Matte
Because it's everywhere in Scotland. Literally everywhere. The Police haven't bothered to tackle it for years and years, so it's been a free run on the entire country to use it as a dumping ground. Comes over in the boats from South America, into Ireland, then into Scotland. They haul it in on the fishing boats, and nobody checks them so it's very easy to do.
And yes, there's no such thing as recovery services in Scotland. All the money for that was stripped away in the early 2010s because the money was redistributed and put towards the SNP independence campaign leading up to the referendum in 2014. Back then Salmon was SNP leader and Sturgeon was Health Minister, but nobody battered an eye lid because the truth is people aren't really going to notice or give a damn about a bunch of addicts losing access to recovery treatment. When the funding for all of that was stripped away, there was nothing to replace it, so that's when the numbers started creeping up.
because of a 50 year failed drugs policy? hmmmm?

Because this is what the Scots do best.
would it help to legalise cannabis and invest money spared more in prevention than in prohibition and drug deal policing?
Dope isn't how they're dying
Yes, it should happen. One problem is that cannabis dealers can also be dealing in harder drugs. There are also periods where hash is broken down and mixed with harmful ingredients to make it go further. 9 USA states have it legal and there is a tax on it. Dont know how the tax is used but there is obvious other drug taking and problems it could be used on.
