Check out some David Davidson from Revocation. Especially off The Outer Ones album. He shreds but his vibrato and phrasing is amazing in every song on that album
I know it's not as iconic as these solos but that guitar solo in Don't Fear The Reaper from Blue Oyster Cult really stands out to me, very dark and mysterious!! Muhahahaaaa!!!
There is no "best" in music so if that solo (which is excellent) stands out to you, that's in your top ten and as iconic as any solos in this video. So much to choose from there is no wrong answer.
Gilmour is my favourite. i think a lot of his solos could be on this list, such as Sorrow, On the Turning away, Time, On an Island, In Any Tongue and Great Day For Freedom. i love them and many more, especially when they're played live. they're usually the best
It is impossible to pick only 10 iconic rock guitar solos. Nothing here by Randy Rhoads, EVH, Eagles (Hotel California), and a ton more. Great playing though.
LITTLE WING.. Wow, so true 👍🏽 I used to wonder if other then blues and r&b if Hendrix picked jazz influence. That song is a Rock ballad meets a sad Jazz tune. 😆
It's like Andrea has a Sharingan he uses to copy all of those artists and their solos.. Impressive ability indeed! Thank you for the insight and commentary Shred!
The solo on tears for fears everybody wants to rule the world is magnificent. The solo for Stranglehold Black Magic Woman Hotel California Down by the River Can't you hear me knocking Anything by Stevie Ray, Robin Trower, Gary Moore, and Roy Buchanan Ugh what else... oh the beat it solo and hmmmm maybe frank zappa's black napkins or hot ratz 🐀
Unfortunate that his list only shows widely accepted, mainstream songs. We'll heard these songs many times, and they are embedded in our psyche. There are many other awesome guitar players who have crafted incredible emotions from their guitar solos as well.
Great list. With all the great rock solos, we could probably find 50! I think that in order to have a great rock solo, you need a great rock progression/chord sequence first. It's hard to avoid becoming boring without having great harmonic content in the song. Notice how these songs all had great progressions, especially the Sultans of Swing.
I don’t have much to add to that awesome list except maybe the solo to sweet child of mine, and the solo to Pink Floyd’s time. But he already had two Pink Floyd solos on his list which shows you how great their songs and solos were.
Something I’m working on is incorporating theme into solo I have 1 juicey piece that I come back to several times and always go to something new. Eg: Theme. Slow play. Theme. Melodic Theme. Shred Theme. Big sustain and bends to end the solo. That way I get a minute long solo, with 4 distinct characters that all anchored in the same general vibe.
I I'm always under this assumption, that he makes these videos while his kids are sleeping. His speaking sounds like most of us when our kids are asleep.
The key to a good solo...the backround and how you tell your story on it The backround is your canvas for you to paint your picture with your lead/story .
Stairway to Heaven is an excellent Tune, but have you heard Fireman's Pole to Hell by Mike Hunt? I saw the Solo Live in 97 and it induced a full blown Stroke. Still can't use the right side of my face.. it was badass.
Great video as always. Just one little thought about your comment about Stairway to hell... There’s actually a Highway to hell. So if there’s a Highway to hell and a stairway to heaven, what does that tell you about expected traffic? :D Keep up the good work, man!
@@mk7073 Clapton is the Blues/Rock thing. Most American Rock/Metal in the 60's and 70's was that structure, and why I think Clapton and Hendrix got the big notice, not taking away from Hendrix of course. Never heard Focus, I'll have to check it out. When I think of Lee, I start thinking of Blues/rock again. Blackmore was the first player that comes to mind in the Neoclassical style of shredding to me.
All great solos!! There must be at least 100 greatest solos!! I've been hybrid picking or using just my fingers ever since i kept dropping picks playing live as a teen, and sometimes picking with the nail of my index! Also, if you break a strings live...good to know your inversions and your notes on each string! Anyone use BIC lighter for a slide (?) cause i kept breaking glass slides...and always had a lighter in my pocket!! Cheerz!
Those 10 were excellent no doubt about it, I have 10 as well (we all do) that kicked my ass over the last 50 years and like these also iconic. UFO, Rock Bottom Live, Ted Nugent, Stranglehold. Pat Travers, Snorting Whiskey. KISS, She from ALIVE. Randy Rhodes, Mr Crowley. Guns n Rose's, Welcome to the Jungle. Johnny Winter, Sweet Papa John from Captured Live. Scorpions, Blackout. Lynch Mob, Wicked Sensation. Ratt, Wanted Man. Oh and every solo Dimebag Darrell ever did !!!
Andrea is always killing it! Great video Shred! What’s your favorite iconic guitar solo?? Mine would have to be the solo on Mr Crowley, Randy is a God!
You said the Another Brick In The Wall solo sounds both written & improvised. If it was recorded like the Comfortably Numb solo, both are correct. I read that Gilmour did 6 full improv takes and then ‘composed’ the solo from his favorite parts of those takes. Also, nice Synergy WAP.
We need an analysis of Slayer riffs and solos - especially Hanneman, everything from Show No Mercy until Seasons In The Abyss. Because, who does really understand a Slayer solo?
hey Shred and all boys and girls out there... what about the solo from Firebird??? that is misssing dude. It should be nro 1 in my opinion. Let's rock!!! what do you think?
Although I'm an actual Italian (not Italian-American) I'll allow you your pineapple because, after all, the thing you people put pineapple on already isn't a pizza, so however you choose to further abuse it should be of no concern to Italians.
So hard to pin it down to 10 but hotel california solo should be there. I guess he didn't play it because the music rights police would screw his video over though
he has a 10 iconic metal solos. He nailed literally everyone of it.
Robin trower is not dead. REMEMBER?
Andrea's channel is really great. especially when you want to get a grasp of some band's sound etc. His riff compilations got me into Death and Tool.
same, he got me into death and nevermore lol
I love guitar solos that are very technical but still very melodic. To hear a guitarist shred melodically is really satisfying
Uli Roth springs to mind. Or vai or goldie
Glenn Tipton's solo in Beyond The Realms Of Death.
@@Kylora2112
Have you seen the vid on UA-cam of his solo on Sinner. It’s amazing.

Marty Friedman 🙂
Andree is a phenomenal player, he catches every subtle nuance of some very different players.
Soloing in rock music gives goosebumps to anyone.
I love the fact that david gilmour got on the list twice. David is one of my biggest influences. I love em.
I know it's not as iconic as these solos but that guitar solo in Don't Fear The Reaper from Blue Oyster Cult really stands out to me, very dark and mysterious!! Muhahahaaaa!!!
Buck Dharma is great player he really has a ear for great solos and riffs.
There is no "best" in music so if that solo (which is excellent) stands out to you, that's in your top ten and as iconic as any solos in this video. So much to choose from there is no wrong answer.
Great fucking guitar solo
Couldn't agree more. The arpgeggios in solos were relatively rare at that time. Don't fear the reaper was one of the first solos I ever learned.
Blackmore is one of the few guitarists along with Gilmore that you can feel the emotion in the solo, When a Blind man Cry's, or Wasted Sunsets.
Big fan of this dude. His videos are always a great watch (3rd November Rain solo was so good!)
Gilmour is my favourite. i think a lot of his solos could be on this list, such as Sorrow, On the Turning away, Time, On an Island, In Any Tongue and Great Day For Freedom. i love them and many more, especially when they're played live. they're usually the best
love ur videos dude, such consistent content
Agree that guy has an awesome channel. The details and nuances that he put into each of these solos are exceptional.
It is impossible to pick only 10 iconic rock guitar solos. Nothing here by Randy Rhoads, EVH, Eagles (Hotel California), and a ton more. Great playing though.
This guy is such a great player, love his stuff
I think the dave Mustaine Solo from the Body Count Song Civil War is one of the most underrated of all Time.
"Pineapple and pizza is amazing, by the way."
So you have chosen... death.
I can't believe you watched my favorite guitarist youtuber, his videos are amazing
LITTLE WING.. Wow, so true 👍🏽 I used to wonder if other then blues and r&b if Hendrix picked jazz influence. That song is a Rock ballad meets a sad Jazz tune. 😆
I think that's the only one the dude in the video didn't *quite* nail. Very impressive soloist.

Loved the phrasing on Rhapsody good cover
Exactly why Gilmour is my solo GOAT. Every single note in his solos is perfectly placed & executed.
The key to a good solo...the backround and how you tell your story on it
The backround is your canvas for you to paint your picture with your lead/story .
"The less is more strategy, which is the opposite of Yngwie's philosophy."
I laughed out loud at that one, lol.
All I can think of is when Yngwie asks how can less be more? Only more is more
That Pink Floyd just hits that cord in you so well no pun intended
Awesome spontaneous gutteral eruption! LOL🤘🤘
Man, when I was learning to play Working Man and Rock Bottom were the goal.
Absolutely!!!
Those Pink Floyd solos are so tasteful and deep. Not many people can play them with the emotion, this guy is talented
Gilmour emotes like no other in this group except for maybe Knopfler
Thanks, I loved that list.
David Gilmour is fu*ing genius!
You da man, Shred.
How about Jan Akkerman as the first shredder? Or possibly Alvin Lee of Ten Years After?
2 excellent names there bro.
That whole Ram Jam album is truly an underrated rock album that sadly gets overlooked because of the one hit.
Ritchie Blackmore ftw! (Deep Purple is my father's favoutite band)
Stairway to Heaven is an excellent Tune, but have you heard Fireman's Pole to Hell by Mike Hunt? I saw the Solo Live in 97 and it induced a full blown Stroke. Still can't use the right side of my face.. it was badass.
I don't know, but to be honest I'll put "Hotel California" on that list for sure

No doubt about it, Ritchie Blackmore was the pioneer of guitar shredding.

EVH was the 1st shredder... no question...he was utterly well rounded though; there were no holes in his game...

"Pineapple on pizza is amazing" is the most evil thing I think you've ever said

1 Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
2 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
3 Randy Rhoades - Crazy Train
4 EVH - Beat It
5 Eagles - Hotel California
6 Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
7 GNR - Sweet Child Of Mine
8 Metallica - Unforgiven 1
9 Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing
10 Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls
One epic solo that I find has been underrated as of late but IMO is the greatest album solo that I've ever heard is:
Pink Foyd - TIME
Feeling is the word. Don't be afraid to feel, people.
Freebird solo has got to be in the top half of this list
This could be a whole video on David Gilmour and Jimmy Page!
Pineapple?? ugh yes I'd take more of that on my slice plz

Nissssssssssssssssssce 🍻🤘🏻
I'm still not sure how Black Betty ever ended up on this list? I can think of at least 168 better solos.
The list is of iconic solos, but you are right that there are better
rainbow in the dark
I think John Mclaughlin was the first shredder. He mixed Jazz and Classical in his SHRED
Did you say LiL Wayne on accident the second time?
I think the numbering got upside down?
Or it might just be bs. Idk...little wing is tite, knopfler, yes. November rain does bring a tear, otherwise I could hear others for a top 10
December Rain please Shred .
December Rain would look like Snow (Hey Ho) by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Shred is the metal moistcritikal
Al di Meola is the first shredder
Wouldn't December Rain be... Snow? :P (Hey oh!)
Smells like teen spirits solo is kinda iconic
greatest of all times ...... Jimmy Page.......................................and Steve Vai
Gilmour..ALL Day
Let’s go SHREEEED
Stop the violence. Stop Pinapple Pizza!!!
