    Even tho you like your doctor, I feel like it's worth getting a second opinion about that growth spur. I mean if its right in the area that hurts, makes sense there would be a connection, especially since its gotten progressively worse... as in the longer these spikes grow, the worse the pain?

      This. My father had a btk. We moved and he got a new doctor and ended up needing a revision. The second surgery was so much better than the original one. Even the best doctors can make mistakes.

      Bone spur is a huge possibility and it could also be a neuroma, which also sucks.

      Allister Trudel my work accident was in 13, I got post surgery infections. Mrsa, psudemonas and 2 stapes....my original orthopedic surgeon did 7 surgeries on it...finally being in incredible pain I sought out a new orthopedic surgeon after reviewing both new X-ray and my records he recommended a immediate bka the bones were brittle and no blood flow...3 days later it was amputated, I now have a excellent prosthetic leg and little or no pain

      i agree with Allister, I think a second opinion is not a bad idea. Sometimes a fresh look is good. i have complex sleep apnea. I went to 3 neurologists before we got an answer., and a Dr who could explain why. Then on to 3#5 who I liked and really wanted to work with me. That was 16 years ago. I want to share with you my HS track coach motto." When the going gets tough ,the tough get going." you in so many ways bring that motto to life.

      Completely agree. Even good doctors aren't perfect and most of them have God complexes. The fact that the pain isn't in the exact right spot makes sense because they do their best to put nerves back where they should go during amputation but they are often an inch or two off. Sometimes instincts are wrong but I trust my gut more than most doctors and it hasn't steered me horribly wrong yet.

    Here’s another vote for: Get a second opinion or even a third. You know your body. No amount of schooling is going to make a practitioner know your body better than you. I’m sure he’s a great doctor, and I’m glad you like him. But it’s nothing personal if you see someone else for a professional opinion. Happens all the time.
    Good luck. Hope you find an answer with an easy, effective treatment!

    I have had the exact same issue. There were no visible marks or sores on my stump, not so much as irritated skin. In my case it was a nerve that was being pinched between the residual tibia and fibula so it hurt even when I wasn't wearing my prosthetic.
    The way it was described to me is the severed end of the nerve tries to reconnect and ties itself up like a ball of string. This is what causes that fuzzy feeling and burning sensation as your brain is trying to interpret the signal which is short circuiting itself.
    I had a series of steroid injections into the end of my stump (three if memory is correct) that cleared it up. They do it under a local anaesthetic guided by ultra-sound now so it doesn't hurt. It's been twenty odd years and I haven't had any problems since.

      Cramaine that’s really interesting, sounds super painful and, as a chronic pain patient, I’m so sorry you had to deal with that! I’m curious if this is still a possibility with Jo since she had the Reinnervation done with her re amputation since technically they’re supposed to have taken the severed nerves and reattach them to other intact nerves making it less likely to have phantom pain that I’m sure you know a hell of a lot more about than me lol ♥️ I hope you’re doing better now and that it’s an easy fix for Jo as well!!! Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

    • @mainepants
      @mainepants 4 роки тому +11

      @@MandieZangora Compared to the pain you endure in the first two weeks after amputation the pain was pretty mild. It was somewhere between a really bad toothache and hitting your thumb with a hammer but almost constant. It's been about 23 years since I had the steroid injections and I haven't needed to have them again.
      My advise to anyone, amputee or not, is always get a second opinion before letting surgeons cut into you. Surgery is the likely outcome sometimes but limbs don't grow back no matter how much you water them! So it's always a good idea to try the less invasive options first.

    Hey Jo! I just saw this video. To remind you, I'm a below the knee amputee since last May and had received my prosthesis on Halloween (cool anniversary, no?!) of this past year. So it's been about 3.5 months that I've had my prosthesis. I had pain pretty similar to what you described and in more or less the same area. The pain is hard to describe but for me it was almost like someone was taking sandpaper to my nerve endings. The pain would only happen to me while my liner and prosthesis were on. At times, it would happen right away after donning my prosthesis and at other times it would take an hour or three. My wife and I go to an amputee support group every month and so at one of the meetings, I told a peer about this pain. He told me he had the same problem and to remedy it, he wound up putting Gold Bond Friction Defense on the affected area. This Friction Defense is like an underarm stick and leaves a thin film that reduces friction on the skin. It's for times when you have pieces of clothing that rub on sensitive areas. Anyway, this helped tremendously to reduce and practically eliminate that pain. My guess is that when one's residual leg starts changing shape inevitably, the silicone liner rubs in ways that it may not have used to. The area at the end of our residual legs are very sensitive and so it might be that your liner is now rubbing on it if you position it in certain ways. This would explain why the pain happens when your leg is in certain positions and why it doesn't get better even if you don't use the prosthesis for a while. The Friction Defense is only $5 a stick. BTW, I use the same brand liner you use, an Ossur Icecross brand liner. I hope this is the source of your pain and that this hack works for you. Let me know how it goes! Best of luck! -Avelino

    hi :) i am a prosthetist from Germany. when you put on your liner do you extend your knee all the way before pulling it up or do you roll it over your knee at a slight angle? i had similar porblems in the past like this because when you put the liner on with a bend knee and then strech it, it creates kind of a pull on you calf muscle which can cause agitation at the tip of your tibia. just an idea, maybe it helps :D excuse my terible english ^^'

    Okay, I just found your channel and I am very inspired by your energy and positivity. With that said I came across this video and felt inspired to tell you two different stories about my brother and experiences we have had with doctors. When my younger brother was 11 he was on his bike and ran into the back of a truck while on his bike. He fell behind the back of the truck and was then ran over. This injury confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life with multiple issues including a sever brain injury. When he was first in the hospital he had an amazing surgeon that worked with us over the months and years whenever my brother had issues or needed another surgery for rods/implants. (we joked with my brother that he was a cyborg because of all the implants and metal in his body). I tell you this to give context to the two stories I am about to tell.
    First.. fast forward years later and we generally worked with the local physicians to alleviate issues that arose with my brother. One day my brother started complaining about pain in his knee (the brain injury slowed his cognitive abilities and he was non-vocal) so we had to play a lot of charades to find out what he was trying to tell us. We knew that he had pain in his knee because he kept grabbing at it and cried in pain. We immediately took him to our local physician and upon examination we were told to go to a pain clinic because they could find nothing wrong with the knee. They felt that he was just having pain from being in one position too long.. or just cramping up. The pain clinic was helpful, but it ultimately did not fix the issue and we found ourselves back in the physicians office. This time they referred us to the local hospital to take x-rays of the knee, and upon examination of the x-rays NOTHING was found! This just dumbfounded us and we were given some other meds/solutions to try and ease the pain he was feeling. Another week would go by and the pain seemed to be getting worse ...((have you noticed the similarities already))... We once again went back to the physician and my brother was examined again. They laid him on the table and tried to do some range of motion exercises and he just screamed in agony and he grabbed the knee the whole time.
    By this time we and the doctor was perplexed! It was at this time that my mom said enough is enough and we made and appointment and long drive to the city to see his original surgeon that has seen over his many more complicated surgeries. Now first off let me tell you about this doctor.... he would be what you call the doctor of doctors and just simply KNEW HIS S**T!! Upon first consultation we explained the long road we had been on for the past month and a half and could not find out what was going on. THIS doctor KNOWS what has already been done and decided to ignore the basic assessments made by THREE OTHER DOCTORS.... He sent my brother up to get x-rays and did not take one of the leg OR knee. A few hours later this doctor found out the issue!! Turns out the first x-ray he wanted was of the hip area and low and behold he had femoral neck fracture!! This doctor explained to us about "radiating" pain and how the body can do weird things because of how we are wired. We were dumbfounded and needless to say we switched primary care physician. We had no idea how it happened, but my brother had to endure yet another surgery to put a screw into the ball through the femur.
    The second story is very familiar but instead of multiple practicing doctors it had to do with a bunch of interns AT THE SAME TIME!! There was another instance where we were back in the city with this SAME doctor who at the time was training a group on interns. My brother had been throwing up and having a hard time breathing, but his NEW local physician immediately recommended us to visit the hospital for x-rays. We simply decided that we wanted to just go to the city again so we could see the surgeon that knows him best ;) As you can imagine we have a good relationship with this surgeon at this point as he has done most of my brothers major surgeries and literally saved his life when he was first injured. With that relationship we converse with him like a good family member. He told us a funny story after examining the x-rays.. He said that he took this visit as an advantage to test his new interns, and allowed them to view his x-ray of the chest. While in the room he asked the interns what they noticed about the x-ray and give some diagnosis. There were 5 interns and they all gave different/same diagnosis based on what they saw. Some said they noticed clouding in one area while others noticed past scar tissue/white clouding in other areas. Whats funny is that his Surgeon took a sharpie marker and circled a very bright oval spot on the x-ray and asked them what they thought what it was. They all THOUGHT/ASSUMED it was a monitor patch hooked up to monitor his vitals.. LOL turns out... my brother had accidentally swallowed a quarter and that's what was causing the weak breathing/vomit. Again.. something simple missed by multiple interns. It does not mean they will be bad doctors it just shows that we cannot and should not just accept what "seems" to be the problem. I am sure those interns walked out of that room with a completely different way of thinking and hopefully realized that its easy to "overthink" the situation. Sometimes the simplest explanation tends to be the right one!! YA KNOW... like sharp bone spurs possibly digging into soft tissue....!!!
    But the main plot to this story and why I wanted to tell you is that this type of stuff happens WAYYYYY more than anyone thinks and much of it is a product of lacking the ability to think outside the box AND fear. Fear because of needless malpractice lawsuits. I believe there are many who would rather just pass the problem off to someone else instead of make a bad diagnosis and risk rebuttal from the patient or their peers. I am not trying to paint doctors in a bad light, because there are many good ones out there with very good intent to help their patients. BUT IN THE END... its YOUR BODY and nobody knows their OWN body but themselves. When you go see a doctor you should both be trying to diagnose. You should both be trying to figure out the best diagnosis and think outside the box. In closing..the best way to think outside the box is get MULTIPLE opinions and never be content with the decision of one person if you know something does not feel right. It can lead to bigger problems down the road ((my brother is lucky he did not have to have a hip replacement)).
    My brother has since passed on.. This last year he was involved in another accident when he was hit by yet another drunk driver and ejected from the van and his wheelchair and killed instantly. My parents and another brother we injured as well. I tell you this because he was a special kind of brother.. he loved to help and teach people how to overcome adversity and heaven forbid... with the use of some dark humor here and there... I am always amazed at what some people endure and post about their progress on UA-cam, and I feel you do it in a very good way and with a special light. Keep that up and realize that in the end.. take it one day at a time AND things will work out with combined thinking!
    Happy Valentines Day.. from your new subscriber!

With hats, tinsel etc on it and a couple small plastic champagne flutes, and plastic champagne bottled and a couple of small disco balls, and then at the end of January it becomes a Valentine's day tree with heart lights, the kids heart art from school etc. And it's about to go down tomorrow 😊😊 It's a really easy way to decorate and the kids enjoy the tree and seeing their art stuff on it throughout the holidays.

    Hi Jo I am so sorry you are still having so many problems. I too had my right lower leg amputated due to chronic pain and the more of your videos i watch the more that i see we have in common. I am older than you and my original accident was back in'83 and after multiple surgeries and using and old fashioned leg caliper and surgical boot i had the operation to fix it forever but as we know that can be disappointing and it just took everything to a much higher level. i had a symes amputation first in '96 but had constant issues with Achilles tendonitis and pain in the weight bearing end, skin breakdown if the tried to make it more like a patella bearing socket. long story short they did a below knee amputation but they cut the tibia way too short, i have a knee joint but the tib and fib were cut right under the knee joint. so it became a nightmare to get a prosthesis. eventually it had to be a cumbersome above knee type complete with metal waist harness and shoulder strap (around 2000) but it was heavy and not comfortable. most of the time i used lightweight wheelchair but was still working on getting more mobile. i used a knee scooter a lot too. Unfortunately 4 yrs later i was diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis, now i use an electric chair but i still have to deal with chronic pain. i have wrecked my shoulders, i became osteoporotic but only found out when i fell and fractured 3 lumbar vertebrae so i have more pain now than right back when i had the symes done! Strange thing is that i cope better with mow than back then, bad days at times but mostly i manage and still live independently with visiting carers. I see your prosthetic s and see how far things have come- we still used wool stump socks and bandaged our stumps every night! but i did have a plaster and can relate to the fact that phantom pain hit when it came off. i still get that nerve pain if i get pressure at a certain point on the end of my stump. they a way to come yet in solving these probs. stay strong you are a fighter and istill beleive both of us are better off than before the amputation- i could not have coped with all that has happened if i had not been able to ditch that original painful foot- the rest is tough but managable. you stay strong

    Hi there, I'm fairly new to your channel, but am glad that I found it. I'm a below the knew amputation as well. But mine was due to a disease I inherited from my mother that caused my blood to form many small blood clots, my experience with learning to walk again hasn't gone well. Most likely due to the disease and blood clot issue, but that's kind of off the topic of why I am posting here. My residual stump started hurting in one localized spot. I mean serious pain, in an area that equaled about the size of a quarter. They did all kinds of tests. MRI's etc. and couldn't find the reason. Finally my surgeon took me into a same day surgery procedure just to have a visual look at what was going on inside my body that was causing that. Turns out that it was the shape of the bone in that one area and some scare tissue that had formed in that spot. He reshaped the bone and removed the scare tissue, and that has almost completely fixed the issue. I'm not saying this is what is happening to you, but wow, it sure sounds the same. Hopefully you see this, as this is an older video. And just so you know, thank you for these videos. I am back in counseling and attempting to deal with my depression and suicidal thoughts. I can't say that it was a 100% because of you, but you did get me thinking and you did make me think about how I can do this again. So, thank you. More than you can understand, thank you.

    Hi, I've recently discovered your channel and let me just say I'm so grateful for the insight you give us on how amputation has impacted your life. I'm a nurse working at a trauma center and we get to take care of people who have recently lost a limb. Hello again Jo! Ok, I'm now pretty much convinced that it is your liner and how it rubs or pulls on the end of your leg that is the culprit. The reason I believe this is because the pain that you described returned to me today after my new socket that I received on Friday. I was pretty bummed because at the start of the day, I was walking nice and comfortably. But a few hours into our day, the slicing, sandpaper-on-nerve feeling returned. I was hoping that because I had a new, much better fitting socket and brand-new liners, that the pain was behind me. But unfortunately, no! It was agony walking the last quarter mile to the car. But when I did get back to the car, I took the prosthetic leg and liner off, and then wiped down all the gunk from inside the liner and off my residual leg. I then re-applied the Gold Bond Friction Defense and let my leg rest outside the liner for about a half hour. I then reassembled myself and the pain was 90% gone! So my standard operating procedure in the future is to take the liner off, clean it and my residual leg, and reapply Friction Defense when the pain acts up. The reason I think this may be your source of pain as well is because you have the exact same liner, the Icecross Dermo, as I do. The Dermo is supposed to have built-in moisturizers that keep the skin moisturized. But maybe in cases like yours and mine, those moisturizers cause the liner to pull and shear the ends of limbs in ways that inflame the nerves. I reviewed your description of the pain and you claimed that the pain only happens when the liner is on and that even with the prosthesis off and when your leg is in certain positions or angles the pain may hit you. So I'm pretty convinced that it is the liner that is to blame. I may ask my prosthetist to switch out my liner to another type of Icecross liner to see if that makes the difference. I hope this helps! Take care, Avelino

    I find the idea that the bone spurs are unrelated to just be silly. To this day, I do not understand why we don't insert a bio-neutral jell pad at the end of a amputated bone to allow for bone growth/repair to have something to grow into that won't add pressure to the remaining tissue. In a era where we are 3D printing parts to go inside the body, this just seems a natural step to help anyone that has a amputation.

    • @milesarcher8502
      @milesarcher8502 4 роки тому +1

      Wrong. Use TITANIUM foil, borrowed from dentistry. Bones can HEAL to titanium, and then they stop trying to 'find' that missing part of the bone. This is why surgeons no longer use titanium plates & pins to repair severe fractures: THEY CAN'T GET THEM BACK OUT LATER.

    • @loganskiwyse7823
      @loganskiwyse7823 4 роки тому +1

    15 year Veteran DBK here and this is my advice: new liner. Another big problem I found out lately is negative pressure built up in my suction leg pulling my leg into a bad spot. I was told to use a sock to whisk the air away. Another thing, make sure you don’t have ingrown hairs or something under your skin. I’ve gotten them directly on the spot you talk about and I can’t walk when it happens. In general, if it is a prosthetic issue, you will almost always see marks on your limb. Now another weird idea: shin splints. I’ve put too much weight on my stump where it felt like a shin split. This happened while sitting with my stumps crossed painting for 3 days straight. I would also say you could grind out a section in your prosthetic where you have issues and pad it. I found the hard fiberglass is terrible for my leg around your same spot. I found a softer surface more comfortable which helped. Lastly, check your callus at the bottom of your stump, I’ve had it disappear from bruising and it can take a while to fix. You may just need a new socket. I’ve had issues with a socket and no explanation as to why other than my problems went a way in a new one. If it’s a nerve thing than something is pressing where it shouldn’t and you can’t always tell where sometimes.

    Speak with your prosthetist and show him your scans as he maybe able to position a patch or padding so that the pressure is taken away on the bone spur. You nailed explaining the bone spur pain 👌🏻it really takes your breath away. The last thing you need is to have yet more surgery looming over you. Fingers and toes crossed🤞🏻🤞🏻🦶🏻for you jo. I have a neuroma on my residual limb along with the spur and my prosthetist casts my socket to make sure there’s no pressure on both. It took me and my prosthetist a LOT of finessing and tweaking alignments to get it right but we got there in the end. Hang in there and painting is THE best distraction therapy😉. I know it’s so disheartening and frustrating but you’re doing what’s right for you and that’s the most important thing. You will get to do your 5k it just may take a while longer and some creative thinking with you, your prosthetist and your doc. Try not to beat yourself up the first 18 months of wearing a prosthetic is always tricky but it will get easier, even though it feels like one step forward three steps back 😤 sending 🤗🤗check a comment from @crapgrabcrab this helped a friend of mine and it’s a super simple fix 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤗🤗

    So sorry to hear you are having problems with your stump. Is that an OK word? I know it is the traditional if not Victorian/Georgian term what can I say I enjoy historical fiction. In spite of what your surgeon has said I think it might well be related to the spurs. It might also be ligament related... I suffer from trigger finger and often when I focus on keeping it in the neutral position so soon as I try to move it the pain is very special. Nothing like what you are dealing with I'm sure but it might be worth investigating. I also had bursitis in both knees I could float my patella through 180 degrees all around the joint and the pain was all over the place her one day there next week you might have that as well. Just chucking out some ideas here.
    On a more positive note that painting is beautiful I love the colour and light in it. You might want to consider selling some of your pieces I think there is a market for them.
