Bell 505 flight from Guatemala to Norway over Greenland

- In September 2021 Lars Berland from Sandnes, Norway bought a Bell 505 helicopter in Guatemala. Due to several circumstances in Guatemala he decided to fly it home to Norway across Mexico, USA, Canada, Greenland, Iceland and on to Norway. This was a distance over 12000 km and had many challenges. Clips are retrieved from his phone.
I sold that helicopter to the Guatemalan owner. It flew from north of San Francisco to Guatemala City. 😊 Tulsa Turbine
cool
No technical information. How many hours did you stay in the air with EXTRA fuel, how many hours did you fly at sea, how many feet and speed? You need to show the flight points on the map Very amateur video
@@bunyaminatik2558 It's not his video you paint-sniffer lol 😂
What a fantastic mission for a helicopter pilot. As an Army Aviator I was lucky enough to fly the UH1, AH1G-FMC, and the OH58A (206A). Went to Viet Nam as a Cobra pilot. The Cobra had air conditioning, which was great, we found captured NVA documents which told them not to fire on a Cobra, which was also great, except some NVA didn’t get the memo. Then in 1970 in Viet Nam I got a OH58 transition and at that moment I started really liking Army Aviation. 2800 hrs of my 8,000 rotary wing hours are in a 58, my favorite aircraft. She is like a beautiful redhead. Treat her respect and all is good. Don’t give her the attention she deserves she will spin you up. So we learned about LTE (loss of tail rotor effectiveness) from the 58. Learned about low-g dihedral roll from the Snake and learned that a Huey is like your mama. She will forgive you even when you don’t deserve it.
Momma carries her weight well.
Thanks for sharing your story!
Ahh the 58, such a great bird... I've always wanted to fly one. One day I will get my hands on one perhaps, I can't complain too much in the 500E though.
@@cmm3338 I am not rated in the OH6 but flew it with a very good friend as his observer/gunner in Viet Nam a few times. He was shot down and killed near Fan Rang mid tour. I have great respect for the OH6. We had a few Cav units flying the 58 as a scout. It was a death trap in that mission if you didn’t understand how to fly it. It would take you for a spin in a second if you let it get below ETL. Most of the Army’s data and training on loss of tail rotor effectiveness came out our experience with the 58. The army many years later upgraded the Alison engine which was a help. You could crash the hell out of an OH6 and walk away unharmed. I would never tell a Flight Surgeon this but I felt that the 58 liked me, the cobra hated me, and the Huey tolerated me. But I loved the 58.
@@---Wade--- Cool! thanks for the insight, and little history lesson. Always nice to find someone who actually has something to say in the comments. I cheers my glass to you tonight.
What an incredible testimony to the reliability of the Bell product!
I don't know why UA-cam put this in my recommendations, but I am glad it did, thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Good to see you survive such a dangerous trip. Many people don’t make it out of Ohio.
This adventure should cover most people's bucket list in one trip 😁
Amazing, This is how UA-cam videos should.
Miss the good old days.
Wow...the trip of a lifetime!
From a guy that started his aviation career ferrying single engine piston aircraft to Europe in the 80s and 90s, I can't imagine doing it in a helicopter. I salute you sir for doing just that and thank you so much for sharing it with us here. BTW if you ever come to the Bell factory in DFW for training or parts let me know, I live ten minute from there.
By mere chance, I saw this video thanks to the UA-cam algorithm, and I want to congratulate you for having planned and carried out this epic trip. On several occasions I felt as if I were traveling with you in the cockpit. Cheers and Happy New Year from the Dominican Republic.
Great video. Great pilot. Great journey. Great helicopter. Thanks for sharing
Holy mackerel, what an adventure. I watched a video years back of two dudes who flew delta wing MPLs from Argentina to Cape Town, all the way up over Greenland and then down the west coast. The paper work must have been a nightmare. I don't do borders very well. Well done
You basically experienced my dream: Flying from Guatemala, which is where I was born, raised and where I'm currently living, to Europe in a helicopter. This was pretty entertaining to watch. That Seahawk at minute 8:00, chef's kiss.
What a great adventure! I also learned and was amazed that Iceland is actually closer to Greenland than to Norway... Great choice of music!, that really contributed to the experience
So a second tank. That is how you can get that long stages. Great trip! Thank you for sharing.
Yup. All smaller planes cross big body of water with second fuel tank installed inside. Saw on another UA-cam vid. Lol
@@dabda8510 thanks for sharing. Super interesting.
Way to go guys!! Thanks for sharing the experience!!
That those shots you got over Niagara falls were awesome amazing footage
Just insane man!!! how you made this journey from Guatemala to Norway. Great adventure 😎
Holy crap, small world! I was on that Chrono flight in Nunavut, I remember seeing that Bell with the bizarre tail number. Sorry about the Hotel 😂
Holy Lewis and Clark Airhardt! What a Adventures should be a TV commercial for American Express don't fly your new helicopter from South American to Norway with out it!
Chocking on my beer here just thinking what the fuel bill was! LOL! Cheers from the States, Sunshine Gulf Side!
WOW - what an adventure!
By my calculations, at around 12,000km, with a range of 544km that works out to at least 23 refuels, and direct operating costs of $441 per hour, a journey a cost of almost $23k.
just to save about $15k on freight costs , go figure
@@mickkidston7344 he had the journey of a life time
He is Norwegian, money aint a problem for us buddy

Somehow I got recommended this video. I enjoy it, and I hope you will upload more
I was flabbergasted and totally entertained by this epic adventure you guys just undertook. I recently flew on a Blackhawk for over 1000 kms in one day over here in SE Asia. It was fun and brutal at the same time. I can only imagine how grueling this 12K kms were for you guys. Hole scheisser! Thanks for sharing, brother.
I love it! Waiting for your next video ❤️
Wow, the fuel anxiety...yikes. The furthest I've flown in a helo was cross country in the USA, but fuel stops aren't an Issue overland obviously. We did go from Okinawa to Mainland Japan but again we were in CH46s with extra internal fuel tanks so again no issue. Flying across all that water in a small helo, your planning has to be spot on.
That one is a really good-looking fuel to noise converter I must admit.
Excellent video.. enjoyed it!
Incredible experience! .
Incredible man, congratulations ! Love the Dire Straits music
What an awesome adventure!
Loved the Tom Petty ; Learning to fly song. That northern stretch across Quebec is massive, unpopulated.
Wow. You flew all the way to norway without emergency floats!?
Thank you internet and UA-cam algo🙏🏻 What a journey🔥
Great video, you should make this into a documentary ❤
Bad Ass journey and video thank you for taken use on that trip ,I tip my hat to you sir👍
incredible video!
hell of a journey that.....nicely done..
Any vid that starts with helo's and CCR is going to be a good one
Truly fucking amazing. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Epic ferry ride man!!!!
This insane Adventure, Very nice you have new Suscriptor, Keep it going.
Great video !
Thanks for sharing man
what an adventure - and I see the comment below, my same question, quite a bit of water crossing without pop out floats
Balls of steel , what an adventure ...
This is absolutely insane
Stilige video og for en tur!! 😮 helsing ifrå Figgjo 👍
Legendary journey! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
_And,_ as ol' *Igor* would have put it; _''Only in heelicopter!''_ 🚁
Supercool video exept for the vertical video footage.....
Amazing!
Really crazy journey, among the most dangerous I've ever seen... the video has short takes but it must have been scary in the long hours low over the Northern Sea 😬
What an adventure!
pretty damn cool! Well done.
Thanks for posting your delivery trip - what a beautiful ship, what will be its job? You brought a a tear to my eye , I miss my MD 500 so much. best of luck to you and your new ship.
Now that's what you call an adventure.
would have been great to see your entire flight path on a map.!!!.like key west to Manhattan NY..was it a full coastal flight..??
Grymt häftigt! 💪🤩
This is EPIC ! ! !
new subscriber i love this kind of adventure hahah
man this is legit! subbed!
That was fun, where to next?
The most amazing part is that he left Florida and the sun.
Can you pls share the map of the trip. I am curious about the canada to greenland and iceland to norway part?
Excellent work! Is the turtle pac linked to the fuel tank externally, or internally?
Bravo!!!.......Well Done...........................
Awesome flight, congrats! What was your altitude over the oceans / seas?
Flott gjort!
Great machine ❤
We arrived ,now we need an engine overhaul!!!😂😂😂 respect for the feat !!! Impressive
When the world goes so crazy that this (including stealing fuel from an abandoned polar station) becomes the sensible option... Well done mate and cheers to you!
Awesome!
That was awesome
Wow when you flew by New York what a difference how the water opened up big city
Rather epic!
I've tried to research stuff like this. Working on a radius of stated range (or less...hehe), I thought I could plan a trip to Europe. Is the proper fuel available pretty much everywhere? Seems you have an extended range tank as well. Any website you can recommend for me to read up on general rules/laws on landing in people's yards and such? I read up on it a bit, but it's not clear to me. I live in Canada, and plenty of land around where I'd like to be able to land and take off legally. Great video.
this is cool. how many flight hours it toke? love the hangar door ;)
Gratulerer till den fantastisk resan! 🚁⛽ Undrar bara, har Bell sponrar ni?
Epic adventure
What an adventure
Amazing once in a lifetime adventure ! How much did you spend on fuel?
Thats nuts. Completely nuts. Did somebody else like that before?
Excellent flight
Fantastic- ofcourse they did do it for the adventure of getting their own machine home. A 40 ft would cost much less on a boat but thats no challenge! Well done! Solid machine helps. Turtle packs a must! Good navi also, 2 pilots, survival gear and emergency gear etc make it fully ok!- Lucky you "found"some fuel........ Sweet low flying also! Sorry for the bad filming.
are you able to share how you connected the fuel bags to your fuel tank?
Epic! 👏
Not bad ! Super performance ! I always wish you a good landing with it ! 👍👍👌👌
If you have a copter you can go anywhere. And especially in this type. Great vid music.
Is it possible to use the TurtlePac in the baggage room instead of the rear cabin?
For the amount of weight that that would be, it would be best to have it where they did. plus i dont know if it would fit back there.
Cool :)
just curious how it costs this jorney on expences?
How many times y'all have to stop for gas total? How many times did you have to stop to show paperwork to countries that you passed over?
Awesome
Fantastic. How many flight hours and fuel did it take?
Skol from yyz
EPIC !!!!!
Great Video! It is Cozumel, Mexico not Cancun.
Great video!
Would love to get the license but over here, even with a more than decent salary it's not affordable...
Small chance to get the flying hours and the licenses when joining the airforce but ours is so small you almost don't get the chance...
First part of your trip looks fun, last part...nerve racking.
Wait..., this journey "had many challenges"?!
That's an understatement.
I mean, this chopper needs refuelling like, what, every 2.5 hours at max speed? With a range of 600km at best?
Wow, impressive.
Max speed is around 150mph?
How much did he spend on JetA?
Vad kostade resan i tillstånd och bränsle ? :)
