I have an identical flag off of Iwo Jima that my Dad brought home as a barely 19 year old survivor of Iwo. It is nicely framed and displayed. Due to the abuse of other of our family members who were POW's I don't know how my Dad would feel about me returning that flag.
It would be a great honor to return it for your family and theirs. Plus the world being as unstable as it is right now the Japanese are good friends to keep in the world, acts that can bind us together would be good for all of us.
I don't know your religious affiliation, but forgiveness is the highest act of humanity as its one of the hardest to do. For us to let go of our wounds and injustice.
Each flag was created by close to a Japanese soldier who wrote his name, messages and their signatures wishing him good luck in the battle etc. You will be able to learn more about the flag - Yosegaki Hinomaru with this video link below we created: ua-cam.com/video/EQ1i2ZVdJtA/v-deo.html
