E96 - Isaac Paredes Ejected After Complaining About Manny Gonzalez's Strike Call, Warning

- HP Umpire Manny Gonzalez ejected Rays 3B Isaac Paredes for arguing a strike one call in Oakland. Paredes continued his complaint after a pickoff attempt. Manny stepped out from behind the catcher and removed his helmet to warn Paredes, which I think usually goes poorly. Report: www.closecalls...
And it did go poorly...Paredes was ejected just seconds later.

Hey we are still on pace for 250 ejections this season! You will be exhausted CCS but keep up the good work
Gonzalez actually favored the Rays by a slim .06 runs in this game. If the best team in baseball can't beat the worst team in baseball, the frustration is understandable, but don't blame the ump.
Great post. Any favor is unintentional
Get some sleep Lin! Take care of yourself.
What the ump did kind of reminds of when I was a kid goofing off in the back seat of the station wagon with a friend or two, and then my mom, feeling things were getting too out of control, suddenly pulled the car over and stopped at the side of the road until we all settled down.
Gonzalez should have owned his mistake. This sequence makes me think he didn't.
Manny may have recognized he missed the pitch. Two inches is a small distance. Even if the call was incorrect there’s no excuse for acting a fool.
@@rayray4192 Agreed. No excuse for Manny's behavior here.
@@priceright8963 you are clueless skippy.
Standing room only, everyone couldn't wait for Manny G. to come to town. I wonder how merch sales are going?
Non umpire making asinine stupid comment. STFU
@@bradt7451 Can only umpires make asinine stupid comments here? Makes sense.
I pitched from little league to highschool and started to play travel baseball at age 13 for coaches that played pro or college. But you are told to never argue balls and strikes because that's an immediate ejection but if Peredes was thinking straight. He could have told his pitcher where the umpire is calling balls and strikes because that would have been helpful to his pitcher. But catchers are taught to frame pitches if they are close to the plate and the ball could have been on the outside part of the plate but the catcher does a good job framing it where his pitcher is going to most likely get the strike call
Oh wow 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 i was just watching this ejection on MLB Network last night Rays are hilarious when it comes to ejections and brawls.
I think the Jerry Lane ejection was so much worse than this one. That one literally looked like a parent admonishing a little child because they were acting up in public. Totally uncalled for.
Jerry may have handled that one poorly, but at least he ejected a coach and not a player.
Plenty of players are children
@@priceright8963 Only because Jeremy Pena has the discipline of a saint in that scenario. I don't think there are very many players out there that handle that as well as he did.
You are correct.
@@McClimber234petulant spoiled brats.
Can you do a video on the balk called on Tyler Anderson in the Angels/Rangers game played yesterday? Don't understand why it was a balk
T7, 2 out, R1, ball 4 pitch to Rendon was a definite no stop. You can hear somebody yelling something as he delivered, probably a field ump yelling balk. Balk was ignored because ball 4 advanced batter and R1. Play continued without delay. On an amateur level umps might call time and then voice that the balk is ignored. Play by play shows R1 advance on walk, not balk. But scorekeeper must have heard the balk and charged Anderson with one. I don't know if the pitcher gets a balk on his record when the balk was ignored.
@@jamesmurray3948I’m umpiring pro rules this summer. I’ve had a single and a home run so far in the live balk. There’s no good reason for the high school balk rule to be a dead ball.
@@rayray4192 My reference to calling time was not because it's a dead ball in NFHS. While there is no need to call time at the pro level where all know the balk is ignored, you might need to in amateur levels other than NFHS only because there might be some confusion where you have to explain that the balk is ignored and the batter is walked.
But I agree there is no good reason for NFHS to make a balk immediately dead. There is a bad reason though. Numerous HS umpires would not be able to implement the rule properly.
"respectfully" lmaoo these announcers
Fans have no clue how much profanity comes from players and coaches. Disrespectful and childish. My 18-U games have more respectful players
@@rayray4192 true. when i played, swearing was rampant lol
I think him walking out and taking off his helmet basically is a body language communication saying that’s “enough” no problem with it because if he told him 3 times with mask on than the player wasn’t getting the message. Actually the umpire was giving him a longer leash! Actually I have no issue with manny doing what he did! We all miss calls, it’s apart of the game.
Totally agree with you. The player was complaining nonstop and wouldnt stop when warned so yeah take the helmet off and be very clear with the next warning. The guy still had something else to say and then got ejected. Good. I am so tired of people saying the players shouldnt be shown up. Sometimes you have to be extremely clear when it comes to these entitled players. So tired of the backing of the players.
@@jameslittleton6810 you only eject players when they show you up for balls and strike calls. If you can't handle chatter about the call get out from behind the plate.
@@jameslittleton6810 how much will the umpire be fined for his histrionic gestures?
I have no problem with what Manny did. But I’m open to being wrong, and learning from this wonderful site.
@@stopitdad69bullshit. You can Mutha - fuck an umpire with your head down not looking 👀 at the umpire.
That strike call was no where near the plate. The ump deserves to be yelled at ...
Some umpires believe they are the focus of the game. Pity
I don't see anything wrong with this ejection.
With the instances you've noted here of the umpire coming out from behind the catcher to address the player it almost seems like the umpire knows he's going to get a reaction that he/she can eject on. Incitement?
On a fun note, watching a game where there was an ejection and when the commentators said, 'he's getting his money's worth' I could almost audibly hear the two note ring tone. When the ejection was highlighted here, sweet music.
Thanks for being a good part of my day. I really enjoy the game a lot more after having found this channel.
Cheers
So, while I can't speak for Manny Gonzales or any of the umpire staff.....the only reason I would walk out to the side like this to semi-privately address a player (batter), was if he had already used up so much behavioral rope that he was figuratively hanging by a thread. Paredes must have said enough to get to that point. Arguing past pitches is always a long walk off a short pier, whether one is a player or a manager.
As the umpire, walking to the other side of the batter's boxes gives the player time to reconsider and perhaps cool himself down, and it also creates extra distance between us, which can also moderate a situation. While I agree with Lindsay that the optics are suboptimal, in the moment it's a decent game management technique to give that player just a little bit of time and space for them to stop their misconduct.
Baseball doesn't have yellow cards. It's ignore, warn, or eject....and a formal warning generally leads directly to an ejection when game participants over-react to getting their warning.
30.5 game difference, whoa
I’m called it bad umpiring that is it
I don’t mind this approach of a player as much, he’s jawing, the ump goes to the opposite side to give him the stop sign, the other was more combative in my mind, going directly up to the player as if to say “what did you just say, I want to hear it again” versus “hey, let’s stop this”
Yeah, I'm with you. He's warned him a few times through the mask, players is not hearing it. He takes off mask, keeps distance, says we're done with that. Player keeps on jawing. What do you expect? Ejection.
I thought the same thing. He wasn’t in the players face and, visually, it is clear to everyone that a warning is being given.
@@randominternet5586nahhhh, when you miss a call you gotta let them jaw a little bit, you fucked up, you gotta deal with that, when you fuck up then start ejecting people for it, you make yourself become the most hated ump in the league, not by the fans but the players and managers too
The player got himself ejected. Not the umpire ejected the player! 🤷🏾
Back in the day Umpires had thick skin...where u had to touch or bump an ump to get ejected...now umps get butthurt so easily over the littlest of things
Once again taking the side of an entitled player that won't stop complaining. The umpire gave him plenty of rope and the guy would not stop. There is always a time and place to be very clear to the player.
This is nothing new but umpires need to be held accountable since players are for doing the same thing. The umpire showed-up and baited the batter. Period.
Bullshit Big Tex. You are speculating. You have no idea what was said.
There is no respectful when you show up the Umpire. Most players are grown Punks.
I think the ump got his moneys worth.
Should've just tossed him first.
Usually, a bad call is preceded by a good ejection. This isn't the case. No reason to escalate tensions like that.
Batter escalated the scenario. You have no idea what was said. Pure speculation
@@rayray4192 I may not, but I know someone who does. And I'm talking to him right now. Tell me what Gonzalez and Paredes said please, without paraphrasing.
@@priceright8963 I don’t know what was said sir.
@@rayray4192 Okay. Then don't accuse others of what you're guilty of. Capisce?
@@priceright8963 you tell me what they said. I don’t know
MLB Umpires are totally out of control. The slightest little whimper from anyone and they eject them. A good Umpire must know that they blew that Strike one call. It was at least 2" outside. That may be fine for Little League, but not the Majors!
Slightest whimper? Whatever dude. GTFOUTTAhere!!
no its players and fans out of control
NGL it feels like umpires have extremely thin skin lately
Bullshit
no its not about that but guess you can do whatever the fuck you want when your fucking player
You'd think that players would get the idea that enough is enough.
You’d think an umpire missing a call by 2 inches might get a clue too.
@Ryan Lewis I'm sure you wouldn't miss that call ever. After all, you think two inches is pretty big ;)
@@acehyatt44 strange that you think missing a call by an entire baseball at the highest level is acceptable. I get that maturity isn’t your thing. Why is integrity and accountability not important to you?
@@CommonSense823 starnge you think humans are perfect and have the capability to descern a 90+ MPH pitch at .4 of a second and make a split-second decision on its supposed fixed position relative to the strike zone and not occasionally make a mistake. If you want to point out that I'm immature, you should try a mirror.
@@acehyatt44 well, you made the dick joke so….
Human umpires at the highest level of baseball need to be better than this. If they refuse to do so, they can enjoy making $30 a night at the co-ed softball beer leagues while AI replaces them in the MLB. If the MLBUA refuses to hold umpires accountable, accountability will catch up to them sooner than later, and it will be their own fault.
100% agree with Manny. The player won’t STFU so Manny addresses it. I don’t care about optics. The player popped off and Manny got him.
You know, how dumb do you have to be to not heed a warning. These are the same guys who when the police will tell you to raise your hands and they'll argue while having a gun trained on them... dumb... when you get warned.. HEED IT... Yeah, it may not look good... but I'm willing to bet if he was mic'd we'd all agree he said one of those trigger words... ugh..
Oh no! Not a trigger word!!! Umpires are softer than baby shit.
How dumb do you have to be to miss a call by over 2 inches off the plate? Not high or low, off. MLB umpires need to be better than that.
Well, you have to be dumb enough to be a rookie with a career MLB batting average of .223.
The problem is the umpire wants attention and thinks the game is about him
This is exactly right
Exactly....WRONG. Players and coaches when they are told to stop. They need to stop.
the most clueless comment 🙄... couldn't be further from the truth
@@mikek82 maybe umpires should get better when they are told to, instead of letting it bruise their overinflated egos and escalating the situation.
Blah blah robo blah blah
Maybe the umpires should stop taking a lot of crap over strike calls and eject immediately in MLB.
Maybe they should get the call right
@@CommonSense823 Agree 100%, when baseball players stop making errors, coaches stop making bad decisions and batters stop swinging at pitches and missing them completely. When batters start hitting 99% of the time, then I will agree with you.
@@robertbrown7470 that’s a stupid argument. It’s almost like baseball players are competing against each other and one or the other will fail on each play by design. Who is competing with the umpire and causing his failures?
@@CommonSense823 There is no competing with the umpire unless someone wants to be stupid. Your team is already competing against the other team so may as well compete against the opposing team and the umpires as well. Good idea! That will help your team!
@@robertbrown7470 that doesn’t begin to answer my question. What causes the umpire to be so bad at what he does? I’ve already established that your argument about players is fucking ridiculous. But why is the umpire’s failure acceptable?
The umpire compounds a horrendous call by actively confronting a player. Disgusting.
Again, a umpire gets the call wrong and the player let's him no and gets ejected. And the word YOU is a disgusting, pathetic reason to eject someone. These umpires have such thin skin that the word, a word hurts there feelings sooo much they have to eject, bring on the robots and FIRE them all
Except the player looks like he kept on jawing for like 3 warnings, then ump takes off mask to make clear that we are done with the jawing, and player KEEPS on saying stuff. I mean, focus on the next pitch at some point. The player is pathetic and disgusting here. Ejected!
@@randominternet5586 lol. The umpire misses a pitch by over 2” (not high or low, but off the plate) and the player is pathetic. 🤡
Well the warnings were fast. Players used to chirp at umpires throughout entire at bat and nothing came of it. Just accept the fact that umpires are more sensitive and love to quickhook.
Stupid Athletics and bad calls made by umpires piss me off and so does stupidity from this extra innings rule crap.
Get rid of the stupid box. Next thing you know robots will be calling the games. What a joke that will be.
Time for a challenge system at a minimum.
I believe it is high time to have a discussion about players, coaches, etc. that just HAVE to get the last word in. Is Manny inviting the player to get ejected here? Yes. Did the player take the bait. Yes. If you don’t know how to keep your mouth closed and play, you’ll find yourself heading to the clubhouse. Stop catering to egotistic players.
Stop catering to egotistical umpires. Stop baiting players. Start fining umpires who do this. Last I checked, there weren’t a lot of sales in the MLBUA Shop. Nobody paid to see umpires do this during a game.
@@CommonSense823no baiting skippy. Manny communicated and gave the player an opportunity to stay in the game. You are pathetic
@@rayray4192 lol. It was never his intention of letting the player stay in the game after the entire stadium saw how badly the umpire missed that pitch.

i disagree players knowingly are still chirping over something already been called they know what there doing they were told to stop
Sooohh, what’s a better mechanic? Communicate a warning while looking 👀 forward standing in your normal position? I brush home plate off and warn catchers without looking at them. Same principle.
A better mechanic is not to miss a call that far off the plate.
