    In light of Toyota’s recent announcement at CES 2015 that they would be making all of their fuel cell patents available for free, we decided it was a good time to explore the science behind this technology. So we spoke with some experts at CES to help us gain a better understanding of how hydrogen fuel cell vehicles work and why we should be excited about their potential for the future.

    toyota is sharing its ip because now its not profitable, no hydrogen fuel stations, no infrastructure, the priority is to integrate the technology any way possible into the world, and its impossible if toyota does it alone, so sharing the technology is actually an investment, but toyota will stay as a leader in the market

      i dont think so, i think patenteds are expiring so it becomes more availabe to people whi want to manufacture withour having to pay a royal. prime example... harbor frieght tools. they are pretty much producing tools equvlient to name brand tools.

    this sounds amazing. it sounds difficult but practical and could solve a lot of our problems in the future. definitely a topic to keep an eye on and im looking forward to seeing what people are capable of creating with this technology. as usual great vid, you guys always blow my mind.

    I think there are awesome opportunities in this technology if the transition goes slowly to allow current workers within all the industries affected to learn where they can be in the new system.

    Tesla, nor Toyota was the first for either of these ideas. Electric cars were actually the first mock up off the line back when Ford began production and have been available off and on, to this day. Hydrogen power has been in research at least since the late '80s. It's funny to read these comments from people that haven't been alive long enough to know, or that just didn't pay attention or do the research. None of these ideas are new. Self driving tech was touched on in the 50s and Mercedes and Ford motors have both been doing self driving R&D since the late 80s. Just because some companies utilize public media, doesn't mean they thought of it first.

      To be fair, it doesn't matter if the idea existed previously. Nothing succesful was done with it. It's like if I find a cure for cancer but don't do anything with it, it wouldn't count for much. As much as I support giving credit to the original source of the idea, I credit more those who actually do something successful with that idea.

      The hydrogen car is therefore dirtier than all other vehicles!
      Of course, hydrogen can be produced from renewable energies via electrolysis. But this method is several times more expensive and therefore there will never be a large number of cars with hydrogen as an energy storage medium.
      Toyota needed until 2019 to produce and sell 10,000 Mirai.

    First tesla open sourced and now Toyota, whom made loads of profits on there stocks. Now I see were some that money went! This is going to be an exciting future for sure now.

    The thing about hydrogen to consider is that you can make it on your own. There are also new EV batteries way better than current 18650's that will be available in a few years.

    It's good on paper. It takes 3-4 times more energy to extract Hydrogen from water than you get back from a fuel cell. That's why it isn't popular. Ask the guy who develops the Nikola one truck.

    I was crazy about fuel cells and electric cars when I was in high school. Since I graduated in 1979, that was a long time ago.
    Hydrogen is hard to store. That means that trying to run a regular internal combustion engine on the stuff will make it a real challenge to have a long range.
    Also, since hydrogen is expensive (right now,) running an IC engine on it will be expensive.
    On the other hand, if you use a fuel cell (~60% efficiency) combined with electric motors (~90% efficiency,) you can get a very economical car with a good range.
    If Lockeed-Martin's fusion reactor pans out, we will get the much promised 'electricity too cheap to meter.' That means that hydrogen will become MUCH cheaper. Also, we will be able to produce it at home via electrolysis.
    Also, electric motors are great for propelling a car. They have high torque at low speeds. In fact, they can produce torque even when stalled. This eliminates the need for clutches. The fact that they produce torque at any speed means that we don't need a shifter. If we use a motor for each wheel, we don't need any differentials. Putting a motor on each of the four wheels, and controlling them with a computer, allows us to have all of the advantages of a differential and a locked system at the same time.

      @@JGTechBlog Yes. Hydrogen is still hard to store, and is still more expensive per joule of energy than gasoline or diesel fuel -- especially since both gasoline and diesel fuel have gone down in price.
      Hydrogen will go down in price once we get really cheap electricity -- whether it is from solar/wind/hydro, or from fission (LFTR,) or from fusion.
      Meanwhile, in the past five years, the technology for battery electric has really improved. That makes hydrogen fuel cell vehicles look less attractive in comparison.

    hydrogen is amazing! but I think in the mean time, electricity is a vastly underutilized tool for transportation.

      Problem is when u have electricity being produced by fossil fuels there lies the problem and also making lithium is rely bad for the inviroment we should be putting more hydrogen fuel stations in over electric ones. Makes more sence because they are electric cars anyway so makes sence to go hydrogen.

      @@jamesmarshalsea9916 you need to be cleared how hydrogen can be produced.
      1. Extracting the h2, you need heat. Where is heat comes from? FOSSIL FUEL.
      2. Electrolysis, you need electricity. Where is the electricity comes from? FOSSIL FUEL/BATTERY/high volt solar panel or hydroturbine(high cost effective).
      Keep in mind, hydrogen is not primary sources like oil. It needs to be extracted from any bonding chemical to form hydrogen. Which means, more energy required and it is currently expensive.

      So far, there is no known technology that can produce enough juice to power itself. Maybe in time we will develop such technology. If we ever do, my guess would be some type of nuclear source. If I remember my physics right, once it starts you can't turn it off until the source is exhausted.
      Now, we may be able to produce hydrogen using solar as a power source, and only keep the operation open during the day. Since the tech is so new, the plants can be designed to be as green and eco friendly as possible and reduce environmental damage.

      Using hydrolysis or the process of converting water to hydrogen and oxygen from renewable sources the hydrogen is captured and the oxygen is either captured or released into the atmosphere.
      Currently hydrogen is a byproduct of refining crude oil, is used in modern refineries to help crack and treat crude to yield more gasoline and diesel, but much of the hydrogen production is pumped back into the ground as a waste material, sold as an industrial gas or safely released into the atmosphere with other constituent gases.

    I'd love to see this tested in Australia. Teslas would be exceptionally great in the cities but out in rural areas they just don't have enough juice to do the long hard runs to town and back for the shopping or going to market to buy/sell livestock etc. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with a larger capacity tank however could very well potentially go WELL beyond the Tesla shortfall and replace petrol/diesel.
    Better yet if a commercially available solar driven mini plant could be made where you could fill your vehicle from home for free then the technology would have a REALLY strong chance given the cost of fossil fuels around here (around $1.60AUD/L atm). The ability to just plug the hose into the car when you get home and fill it for the next trip and actually have enough stored in a tank for the next refill with energy from the sun and water from the sky would be exceptional.
    We at least are having a large drive on solar electricity now which is GREAT to see. It has a long way to go as 99% is still grid tied bydirectional metering etc but with LION battery tech and other polymers becoming cheaper and easier to get compared to years ago needing a large shed full of 2v lead acid batteries with REGULAR maintenance required our solar is finally coming to a point where we can look at having at least an auto grid/off grid switch where you remain off-grid unless and until your Tesla Wall and panels can't keep up (too much draw or bad weather) and then you are automatically switched 100% to the grid until the wall comes back up to a minimal level.
    The future is starting to look a little brighter but the cost still needs to come down because at the moment it is out of range of low income earners.

    This looks like the only solution but fuel cell energy is incredibly unstable from where the electrons and neutrons transfer electricity to the motor. Lithium battery technology is a lot more efficient with less moving parts.

      +Luke Smith First of all Lithium batteries use primary cells, which means they're non-rechargeable. I assume you were referring to Lithium-Ion batteries. Lithium-Ion batteries have a lot of disadvantages compared to hydrogen fuel cells. LI-Ion batteries have a lower energy density(capacity per volume) and lower specific energy(capacity per mass) compared to fuel cells. Lithium-Ion batteries have a very short life span of 3 to 5 years, during which their capacity will constantly drop. Lithium-ion batteries suffer from self discharge. Hydrogen fuel cells can be recharged using a hydrogen generator. Also, let's not forget ethanol fuel cells, which if developed for a lower price would beat both Hydrogen fuel cells and Lithium-Ion batteries.

    Get around distribution issue by putting water in tank and converting it in house. Super insulate against extreme temperatures and use some passive solar to keep water in liquid state, for example.

    You could use the hydrogen fell cells to charge a battery pack to drive an inverter to power a house...Solar / Wind power could produce hydrogen and stored for the cell

    it doesn't matter how many years of fossil fuel we have left. The change is needed now. Hydrogen I think makes sense, especially if hydrogen is produced clean without the use of oil.... It can be done! I like the range factors with hydrogen and I like the fact were not filling the planet with battery cells? What do we do with all the dead batteries??

      The Toyota Mari still requires Lithium ion batteries to store electricity.

      @Jackson Bangs But its much more efficient. Your combustion engine also needs batteries in order to get it working. It just needs a spark. I think you can use this same concept to let the hydro fuel engine to work.

    It truly is very exciting and a engineering milestone to finally develop and put into production a fuel cell car. No batteries and 300 mile range with a 3 to 5 minute charge and not worry about having all electronics including air conditioning on at the same time also not degrading range or torque....WOW!!!
    I really hope more manufacturers also pick up this technology and hopefully we can all get off toxic fossil fuel and nuclear power sources. And with government incentives you get $14k discount. That's about $43k for a Mirai......$30k Less than a tesla. I applaud the years of dedication to all of those involved in this development.

    What is the fuel of the future? It's the most plentiful stuff in the universe... Dark matter?
    Oh.. You meant hydrogen. I hope extra options become standard and free. This is awesome of Toyota to make their intellectual property free. Now only if an American company would do the same.. Heh kinda of sad. Oh well.

      Unboundedominion Yes! Get rid of the hydrogen and oxygen!! Waterworld here we come!!! And, that would stop the water shortages too. We will need to stock up on oxygen though. There was a movie like that once.
      Think about it. No more Nestle, Ozarka, or Fiji water and all their plastic. We could just reroute the water line into a filtration system and straight into our filling mugs in our cars! Mmmm! Water b r bff!
      This is the real reason oil prices have dropped. They are trying to get rid of supplies. No other countries hold pattens like Unboundedominion said. Every country on the planet doesn't hold intellectual property like Unboundedominion says.

      Oh come on! Someone also point out that business can't give away things for free (assuming if you're coming from the standpoint of a business owner, even small-time). But noo!!! We got to have a debate over if dark matter is real or not.
      Hm... Me, playing both side of the fence (including the devil's advocate - a figure of speech) other causes to fill in dark matter's role and spot would include some new undiscovered quality of the current generation model of matter that we have yet to discover that could account for gravitational extrusion but missing visible measurement. Or something on the quality of smoothness of space-time across the universe may not truly be uniform but asymmetric, which then we would have to figure why and how. All great stuff to take into account if we ever head out into the galaxy and universe. Even better, improve our understanding on current models of how our galaxy, solar system were affect by these things and what role it will play for us in the future, if true. I'll leave the metaphysical spiritual stuff to the experts on that subject matter.

      dark reaper but in this case we haven't actually witnessed it yet and therefore cannot harness it so that statement was pointless. hydrogen we can touch and make use of it

      David Steers Put solar cells on your roof and lithium Ion Batteries in your garage or in your car for storage and maybe you can sell power back to the grid when then need more power at a high price or buy it back from the grid when power is cheaper. Your car might be your biggest storage device. I use my Prius only two short trips a week. They are short trips. One trip I am trying to eliminate with a electric assist bicycle because it is for pleasure.

      @@daviddreyer5817 Or buy a small electrolyser and you can turn that solar electricity into hydrogen that you can then store indefinitely, ready for whenever you need it. Hydrogen isn't about "control", David. Anyone with access to H2O can make it.

    This technology is awesome. I can't wait until it is put into use everywhere. Hydrogen power might be what us going to get us to Mars someday, and it's so cool to look into the future to see how it will affect all of human history. I think it's a great time to be alive. We are at a point in history where human complexity is rising ever higher. The possibilities are endless in the next few decades. This channel is great because it explains some of these possibilities. I love watching the videos because they make me look towards the future and wonder about what's going to happen next. Great channel.

      hydrolox is what powered a lot of the liquid propellant rockets back in the day o.o' they've known that hydrogen could replace gas engines for a long... loooooonnnnng time... the only problem they faced was making an engine that could only run on pure hydrogen if it was a Hydrogen Fuel Cell it would turn water into hydrogen through electrolysis, what this thing actually is, is a Water Fuel Cell because its turning hydrogen and oxygen into water.

    I don't understand why they can't put water in the car & provide a system that converts it to hydrogen. It seems to be the only lucrative process in the long run. Unless they plan to pull hydrogen out of the tap water at local fuel stations across the world. Because the low density of hydrogen makes it a logistical nightmare to transport. It would take 23 tanker trucks of hydrogen to give you the same miles as a single tanker truck of gasoline. Even though hydrogen has more energy per mass the low density forces an onsite or in vehicle hydrogen conversion.

      If you add water mixed with baking soda and add about 12v electricity to the mixture it creates hydrogen for fuel with only oxygen emissions

      Because that makes no sense at all. In order to use the water as a fule source you first have to convert it into hydrogen gas by electrolysis. Electrolysis requires energy. That energy must come from somewhere and that would either be an internal battery or an external power source. If you were to use a battery to convert the water into hydrogen gas you would be loosing a lot of the stored energy, in the process of electrolysis. In that case it would make much more sense to just use the stored energy right away by powering an electric motor. Why would you go through the extra hurdle of converting water into hydrogen gas if you are about to reverse the process seconds later?
      If you were to use an external power source to perform electrolysis you would still have the same problem of storing the hydrogen in a separate tank. It's therefore not an option to fill your car with water since it would lower the total efficiency of the car by many percents.

    I think we can automate fuel cell cars using various sensors,as there is much space due to absence of all that heat management systems that are present in a typical petroleum car.And by photolysis of water we can even create hydrogen at home and hence save a lot by producing electricity for home use.

    the hydrogen filling stations will be quicker that waiting hours to recharge batteries . put them in production save the fossil fuel for jets diesel racing , ect. the engines (electric motors ) will be cheap and a regular maint . replacement . remember ... create jobs ..............

    I don't care about carbon emissions. I look at it more on the economic value. What I care about is will this technology be cheaper than pumping gas in my car right now, and will it generate the same amount of horse power if not more to transport goods and supplies on semi trucks.

      MrNinjaskills101 yet he/she is criticizing me for making economic value the most important issue. And if the counter argument is that the environmental issue is more important then there is something you need to take into consideration. If this technology turns out to be more expensive, and less efficient than fossil fueled powered vehicles then it will eliminate the incentive for people to buy it. Instead they will continue using dirtier yet cheaper forms of energy to power their vehicles, and this new technology won't help the environment at all. That's why economic value should be the most important issue.

    After more than half a decade after this video, we are still struggling with the right conditions to develop H2 technology that allows us to see real change. Perhaps at that time COVID19 and all other environmental issues did not have the same meaning as we do today. Anyway, there is a great challenge to change this paradigm.

    I have a small query that how you generate hydrogen in abundant amount without using natural gas..
    In electrolysis I heard that the amount of energy that generate to hydrogen is higher than output we get and not cost effective...
    Is there any alternatives...???
    If you initiate to prepare the hydrogen gas then how much it would be cost per gallon???

    High pressure storage of a highly combustable gas is still the major reason that I do not want to get into a Hydrogen cell car. Hindenburg effect still worries me.

    Forward thinking.... how about the forward thinking about how much effort it takes to make the bloddy hydrogen. not to mention the fact that theres bugger all hydrogen refuel points and its hard to transport it to remote sites for future refueling sites.
    The reason why toyota shared it is because they cant go it alone in building the infrastructure required. They could but the board and shareholders would lynch them.

    If this technology really works, then it can be used at home too. Many houses in the rural area have large propane tanks. Those can be replaced with hydrogen tanks and provide electricity for the entire house. So why hasn't this technology been picked up? Maybe the cost of producing hydrogen isn't cheap?

      It's costly to run a car with compressed Hydrogen. But you need less weight than a battery. The tank is not that big.

      1 kg of hydrogen at 10.000 psi is about 25 liters. And you have to consider the thick walls of the pressure tanks.

    5 years on, every manufacturer is mainly concentrating on EVs only, battery powered with limited range anxiety being an issue! Such a shame hydrogen isn't being rolled out more, but still too expensive by comparison

    Hydrogen technologies have been around for a long time. It’s time we focused on that rather than battery powered cars, batteries are unreliable and if they go wrong consider your car a write off. To change the infrastructure now everything paid into Enviromental research etc needs to go into this tech now to develop it as fast as possible. It’s possible to make all sorts with hydrogen. I came up with a hydrogen powered boiler using fuel cell technology that powers an element that heats a heat exchanger which especially in the uk all you would have to do is swap out the gas boiler and find a way to deliver hydrogen into homes or design a unit that produces it at source for it to work.

    Just a thought, what if they took this even further?... recycling the water that is produced from the emissions back into hydrogen and oxygen, and reusing that to create even more efficiency, and eventually something near 100% efficiency.

    In an inter dependent world we need these - after all it belongs to the earth - more of these are required around the world - it's good for the environment

      No. Most reactions people are familiar with function solely around electron transfer. For example, Na+ and Cl- to form NaCl. That's a salt. And no explosions result from its production. In ionic and covalent bonds electrons move between the two atoms. Those bonds are in nearly all molecules, including our non-exploding water.

    form water if the hydrogen's atoms are being separated by the platinum
    catalyst and the electrons are being used for electricity? Why do we
    need Oxygen to help us get water? Doesn't water just go outside through
    the pipeline? don't we already have electrons from the hydrogen to
    generate electricity? I really don't understand why we need the

    You asked my thoughts on cars. Well...... I'm a young inventor (in high school level) and I have designed a car that does not need fuel. I wish I can tell more but unlike Toyota I don't have any pattens and being recognized in history is my dream goal.
    PS: I loath how companies are able to create technology that get so close to my ideas and I can't do anything about it.

    I think it is a great idea and about time, I am happy to see that Toyota has stepped up to the plate and offers their research for free for others to build upon and this will allow this country and world to build a new energy culture and industries that will far exceed oil/fossil fuels and yes there is more work to be done but with all of us as contributers to this new emerging technology that is being made open source for all to use and create the future is bright for the entire world.
    Thank you again Toyota for being such a forward thinker and having the wisdom and courage to take steps to help move us all into the future.

    Wow, I can’t believe that hydrogen engines make water that we drink. Hydrogen engines don’t need a catalytic converter like internal combustion engines to reduce toxic air, hydrogen engines just spread water from the exhaust pipe but gasoline powered vehicles spread un burned fuel from the exhaust.

    Like petrol cars at the turn of the last century, there were cars (motorized buggies) but no fuel stations. But as more people started to use cars the petrol infrastructure appeared. The same will happen with Hydrogen in the future.
    I'm not anti EV, I just think HFC/EV hybrid is the future.
