The steam version does not have adventure mode yet... But that is changing REALLY soon on April 17th. It is why I bought the steam version this month so I am prepared in advance. Really excited about it.

Dwarf fortress is one of the inspiration that created rimworld.
Also it is called Dwarf fortress because you usually start your colony by x number of dwarves. This is the typical build your base, craft things, sell it, train troops etc.
Hero mode is the other game mode, you only control a single character that can be anything you've chosen not necessarily a dwarf. You go on an adventure and keep your 1 guy alive.
Lazy newb pack is super important QoL upgrade aince it gives you a bunch of tools to make playing easier like simplifying giving jobs to every dwarf, changing tilesets.
The original game is in ASCII, all the things are letter, symbols and number. Changing tilesets make it easier on the eyes, like making your dwarves have pictures instead of a moving letter D.

The steam version is modernized with proper ui and still very fun but costs money, the og is still free.
