I love this! It’s by far one of the best DITL videos. You did a great job with explaining in detail how your shift went and showing us clips of the process!
I have an interview coming up for a Medical Intermediate Care Unit at a level II hospital working with adults. I have been away from the bedside since 2018! Lately, I’ve been working in clinics with children and adults over the years and now that I’m more confident as a “person” I am ready to start my journey to becoming an ICU nurse.
I hope I get the job but I’m nervous about going back to bedside and dealing with the hustle and bustle of things. I just want to “really know my patients” and be able to critically think as a nurse. When I worked on a med-surg floor it was so task heavy that I felt like I wasn’t critically thinking and I was just following orders. I hated it. Do you think I’ll be ok working in a step-down unit with my big gap from hospital nursing? Will I be able to focus more on what’s going on with my patients on a deeper level than I would on a Med-Surg unit?
Thank you for sharing your life as a Nurse with us 😊!

      Thank you for stopping by.
I believe that it should be easy for you to get the stepdown unit job because almost every hospital is literally hunting for nurses now. Also, you will have adequate training/preceptorship to get you somewhat ready for going solo. I can tell you that even after preceptorship, u would doubt your capabilities but your confidence will come with time. I always say "always ask when in doubt because it's better to ask and be looked as stupid rather than think you know and make a fatal mistake". Most older nurses love answering questions to teach new nurses and so I always tell them I'm a new nurse and they explain things so well to me.
You already have medsurge experience and so bedside wouldn't be totally new to you and yes I agree with you on how you feel when in medsurge. I always say it's boring bec it's like just giving patients their home meds and not thinking hard about what next to do but on the stepdown unit, I can assure you that your nursing judgement and critical thinking hat is always in use.
I do have some more videos on my unit coming up soon, so please stay subscribed and support your girl.
      All the best

@@Stephanieayi01thank you for the insight! Everything you mentioned makes sense and it made me feel a lot better but, I’m so nervous about working as a floor nurse. I ended up canceling the interview and asked to reschedule smh. I also applied for an ICU nurse residency program that accepts nurses that have been away from the bedside for a while. That interview is coming up in a couple weeks as well. I just don’t know what to do or where to start.

Just giving an update. I ended up getting into an ICU residency program for new nurses and nurses who have been away from the bedside for over a year. I’m so excited and ready to use my critical thinking skills as a nurse. Thanks for your help 😊!
