    Until bedside nursing is incentivized financially by management I believe more nurses should leave; I think you made a great decision for yourself by leaving. You can make great money in bedside nursing if you're willing to travel or work yourself into the ground with overtime but a regular 3 shift a week bedside nurse really isn't compensated at a level commensurate with the bullshit you will deal with on the floor, and for that reason I encourage anyone else researching a way out to make the jump!

      Hi Jennifer. You can apply for jobs external to your hospital system in a more traditional way through an online job posting or recruiter. I wanted to stay within the health system where I was working at the bedside and wanted to learn about informatics at my organization. So, I emailed the director of the outpatient informatics department asking to meet with her to learn more. She happened to have a position that was opening soon after I met with her. I applied for the open position through my organization’s job page. My point is that networking is a great way to find an informatics job or any job for that matter. I suggest looking for a department where you would like working and starting a conversation with its leader. Good luck to you!

    • @carolinec826
      @carolinec826  2 роки тому +1

      Yes and no. You could get a job in informatics without working as a nurse, but it likely would not be a nursing informatics specialist position. Those typically require some bedside experience. There are lots of health informatics jobs that don’t require an RN license. I would recommend getting some experience as a nurse first and using your nursing degree before moving into informatics. That would set you up for nursing informatics positions that utilize your clinical knowledge and roles with higher pay. There might be other jobs out there that I don’t know about, but from what I’ve seen the nursing informatics specialist jobs like you to have some patient care experience.

    • @carolinec826
      @carolinec826  3 роки тому +5

      Hi! Any job in healthcare for the most part requires a level of interaction with people. Medical assistants especially need interpersonal skills and a caring, positive attitude to work with patients. That doesn’t mean you can’t be an MA if you’re an introvert, just that it might not come as easy to you as someone who is extroverted. Informatics still requires working well with others, but is not patient-facing; so it’s easier for people who don’t want a lot of client interaction. You could eventually work up to being a systems analyst which would be more computer work and less work with people. Maybe check out medical coding/billing as well.

      There are ways to incorporate bedside nursing and informatics. For example, you could be an EMR super user while working as a bedside nurse. You could also do EMR education on your days off or maybe work out a way to work part time on the floor and part time in informatics. However, most of the nurses that I know who work as true nurse informatics specialists do solely that role. They have left their bedside practice and informatics takes up 40 hours of their week. This is just my personal experience - I’m sure some people do both.

    • @carolinec826

      There are many health informatics jobs that do not require you to be a nurse, so yes you can do it without bedside experience. Examples would be EMR analyst or educator, EMR support specialist, data analytics for a hospital etc. So you can go into the field without bedside experience, but bedside (or any healthcare) experience is really valuable in informatics since you need to communicate with clinicians and understand content. Hi! I’m sorry for the late reply. I personally think your clinical experience as a CNA and then your nursing degree provides you with enough background to work in informatics. However, some employers may feel differently. You’d have to apply to some jobs to find out, but I think you could emphasize in an interview all the ways that working as a CNA has taught you about using technology in healthcare.

    Is it a lot of sitting at a computer?

      Hi! Yes, it is. Some informatics jobs include rounding in the hospital, which would put you on your feet more.. but for the most part it is a “desk job.” I definitely go to the gym more than I did as a bedside nurse. :)

    Why are there so many videos of Bedside Nursing? never even heard the term until this month. so nurses are really not respected in the US.

    • @carolinec826
      @carolinec826  3 роки тому +4

      I don’t think I understand your question. Bedside nursing is a term that refers to working as an inpatient nurse within a hospital. This differentiates the job from a nurse who works outside of acute patient care, like in a clinic. I do believe that nurses are respected in the US in general and are a trusted profession, although this could always improve. The point of this video is to describe an alternative for working at the bedside as a nurse. Informatics is a specialized field within nursing.
