- Okay so I wanted to start today with a little treat, especially since I hadn't had any lassie yet in the South. I decided to try the most expensive lassie not only in Chennai, but in India.
This was a saffron and cardamon lassie that I had seen a lot of people love, but also had a lot of controversy around this spot. I tried it and am glad I gave it a shot. I wish I could have meet the dad and original owner.
Then I wanted to head to Zam bazaar but we ran into some tuk tuk problems. I couldn't find anybody that would shoot me a good price. After walking the market, meeting friendly locals, and even learning a little Tamil it was time to find a Tuk Tuk.
Nobody really gave me a good price, but I decided just to go. Well, turns out I picked the guy with a broken tuk tuk and I felt bad so I tried paying for him, but he didn't want it. Finally made it to Zam bazaar and my tuk tuk driver didn't have change so I just gave him all the money.
Zam bazaar didn't have much going on so I decided to just go eat. Ratna cafe is a must eat spot in Chennai and I would travel back here just to eat the Sambar. One of the best sambars I have ever had. You could put it on a shoe and I would eat that.
Back to walking and I noticed Jigar Thanda, which I figured was like Raja Thanda in Lucknow. So I went and gave this health drink a try. A nice lady and her cute daughter served me up a glass and I enjoyed this refreshing drink with some locals.
My last task for the day was to go and find a sarong. Still not sure if that is what it is called in the local language or not, but I found me a beautiful white and blue one. Just glad it was big enough to fit around my wide hips and big ole stomach.

I really like the way you choose the auto driver to the jam bazaar...he really talks and says in a polite way and he explains why because he needs to return empty..mostly the auto drivers have some routine route where you just need to pay 10 or 20 rupees but you are asking for a exclusive route so they just asked high amount

I think you're right about having sambar when you have a sore throat or down with a cold. When I was living there during COVID period, I can remember my landlord offering me sambar saying it'll help if I ever get infected. It's just a healthy super-food I presume.
Also, the sarong is called "Veshti". My Tamil friends in the comments can correct me if I'm wrong. 😅

Max, if you are still in chennai, I recommend you to go to EA mall and sathyam theatre. You will love those places. It's actually nearby, If you are in Auto, ask them "Express avenue Thousand Lights"
I mean we are told that auto drivers in Chennai and Bangalore are crooks and then you come across drivers whose auto is broken down but still they are honest and won't take your money. India is such a weird but wholesome place, love it. Love and kindness comes from the most unexpected places.

Loved this episode, grew up in Chennai and moved out to usa 23 years ago and this video brought me my childhood memories, the bargaining with auto, lassi shops, ever awesome Triplicane Ratna café. This restaurant is my father's favorite breakfast place when he was a collage student 60 years ago but I have been there only once. Will definitely visit there when we visit Chennai again. I am glad to see the honesty of those auto drivers, very impressive, after ola and uber's domination I thought these guys went out of favor but I am glad to see them having their integrity.

Hi Max, your videos are wonderful specially your Chennai visit. Not like other foreign vloggers , you are adding even subtitles, so that we can understand easily , which otherwise would have been difficult to understand your pronunciation. Incidentally the places you covered are all my favorite places especially Ratha Cafe. I used to stay near the place in 1980 when I was doing my chartered Accountancy course. Once or twice in a week I was eating idly sambar. Later I got a chance to visit the same in 2020, when I came back to India after working abroad. You know what I had idly sambar and not even a bit of change in the taste. I even asked the person served me "have you given me the same sambar which I had in 1980's"

Chennai is not actually for Lassi. Chennai is for buttermilk, Infact most part of south india is. Lassi if you want to enjoy go to haridwar. It's heaven.

If you have time, try Trichy-Madurai-Tanjore. Smaller cities than Chennai, but the heart of Tamil Nadu. Food is great and people are nice.
Haha, the sarong is called lungi ( which is more of a casual wear, comes in different colours and patterns ), it has a counterpart called veshti ( usually white/ offwhite with gold borders) which is worn during formal occasions. Also nowadays you get veshti with velcro bands which makes them easier to wear.
That's also available in Kerala 🤞 also if you know you know 🤝

@Daily Max, before trying the north india side lassie I also thought this is the best lassie but after having that in North india they prepare the best lassie and this lassie does not even come closer to that taste for sure..
But in Chennai we have better lassie places but the lassie is not worth the hype.
