Hey everybody, sorry I didn't use the local language in this video. But the good news is I learned my lesson in the next video so I hope you get to see it!
It's okay.. i like the video. I was going to comment about the difference of the language. But saw this comment, since you noticed it I'm sure you'll learn the difference. Also there's sort of linguistic divide between North and South of India. In North it's Indo-European language family and in South it's *Dravidian*. Also the South states (not all) are non-Hindi. They also resist the dominance of Hindi. And that sentiment is strong in Tamilnadu.
It's ok.। The kind of friendliness you show and the language of love is understood everywhere in the world. Ur presentation simple but yet so effective tht I feel I'm with you😆

Why is South India so much worse in hospitality ? There's no sense of Athithi Devobhava in South India it seems. Is that common in places like Tamil Nadu? Seems like a lack of fraternity there.
@@swarnavasamanta2628 its your fate that u didnt experienced good of south....in reality South Hospitality is best of entire india...south is no.1 in knowledge, south is no1 in food, south is top in economy.....south is no.1 in entertainment etc etc etc.....thats why almost many north indians settle in south cities....why more south indians not able to settle in north cities????
@@harikc872 Not my fate, it is the case. Even my friends and relatives didn't experience good hospitality in the South. All top hotels that offer great hospitality are in North. Lucknow is world famous for its hospitality, no South city ever gets praised for its hospitality or welcoming nature. Everyone is just consumed and concerned with themselves no concept of true fraternity with friends, everyone is driven by their own motivation and seems shallow in character and only thinks and cares about their own circle. The true helpfulness and caring just isn't there and relationships are transactional by a margin. I went to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vishakapatnam, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, kochi and Madurai. Nowhere i could find the same sense of belonging and welcoming nature as in cities of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal and Punjab/Haryana. @@sonic.garden it's very difficult to come across such places even for a local. The only way people find out about these places is through word of mouth. First of all thank you Max for this video. Am flooded with tears actually. Am in a foreign country now and I really miss my hometown. The fun fact is, I am from Mylapore. And you were literally two blocks away from my home. All the places you covered in this video are my go to places. Its like I don't have a count on how many times I would have gone there. I do miss Mylapore a lot and now you can say why I had tears in the first place. Once again thanks a lot and I loved your video. I don't comment on any videos I watch. Probably this is my first comment.
Same feeling here too Kishore, after seeing Max’s wonderful video. I mean, I’m in US and watching my Mylapore (born & raised) Temple & all these my favorite places. Really missing Mylapore & Chennai now. And this is my very first comment on any video or any online shows. @Max, Awesome Job Max & continue your great work! Keep going!
Hey Max, I am super impressed how you're embracing my hometown. It can be intimidating at first ( just like the waiter at the Karpagambal mess ) but once you get into the thick of things we are one of the most hospitable people you'll meet. Just a quick thing about the banana leaf service at the restaurant. We traditionally use banana leaves as a plate to consume food. Although it is almost nonexistent nowadays, some traditional restaurants still use it. The water on the leaf is to clean the leaf and not your hands. You just wipe the water off and get stuck into the delicacies. I know it can be difficult at times because every state in India has its own culture and language but I am amazed at how good you're at navigating the obstacles and mingle with the local. Can't wait for you to explore my city and India more. Good luck.
Randomly found this video. I am from Chennai. I'm glad you had a good time. That is how we eat our dosas and idlis, with sambar and chutney all mixed together. Finish it off with some filter coffee. You are an authentic south indian now. Have fun.
I've been born and raised in India but never visited Chennai. Watching your videos feels like visiting Chennai through your POV. It's so cool! Would love to visit there someday. You're doing an amazing job Max 👍
Try visiting Meenakshi temple in Madurai, you will definitely appreciate the walk around the temple in late evenings, full of colorful small shops and fantastic hospitality.
Randomly found this video today.. The fact you survived the ven pongal (a sleeping dose in the guise of a tasty breakfast) you earned my respect. The way you ate just like the locals do... I am subscribing 👍🏻 looking forward to more such awesome vlogs.
I've been to the temple, had the breakfast in the exact same place you had and on my way back home, got the rosemilk and I can say this, the people, the place has always been vibrant and that is what is beautiful about south India, the tradition and culture.
I am so happy to see a westerner eat South Indian food with his hands exactly like it's supposed to be eaten.... I am a Mumbaikar and Southern dishes have a big influence here.. We can't live without our morning Idli chutney... Good videos.. Keep it up👍
Hey Max it's been a few days I am addicted to the way you talk to strangers, you know how to eat Indian food all the way from North to South the delicacies with utmost respect I wish everyone can be humble human beings like you Max ❤
I really like your idea " giving money as a tip to Hardworking working person instead of doing nothing and begging people " 👌🏻❤️ this is what I always felt like
Amazing vlog Max, I just want to point out a cultural tradition in south India. When you went to karpagambal mess, they gave you a banana leaf to eat food using it, and usually people sprinkle a bit of water on it and you clean the leaf using it. I’m myself unsure why we do this, but seeing you dip your entire hand into that water made me laugh and made my day 😂
As per my understanding clean the leaf, so that any dirt or foreign particles in the leaf goes off, since the cut leaves are kept in store room and bundle, it has a chance of getting contaminated
Amazing vlog man! Because of your vlogs we are able to understand different cultures, foods, behavioral patterns of people in general in different countries in the world. I'm from India & I wish if possible you should visit every state of India. You are doing great job, much respect & more power to you! 😊

I have to be honest. I have watched plenty of americans trying indian food but never have i sticked with one person and i am impressed with how you blend in with the culture by understanding them and you also learn the language. Very good. There are other good youtubers too, but you are diff.
Pongal is made from rice and husked green gram dhal, which is one of the easiest dhals to digest. It is cooked for a longer time and with more water than normal rice and then a seasoning of maybe pepper, cummin, asafoetida etc added . All these ingredients make it easy to digest as well as nutritious There is a sweet pongal too where jaggery ,cashews ,cardamom powder is added instead of salt .There are many versions all over India called khichdi and is a good food when under the weather as it is light ,easily digested and nutritious.
I'm an expat living in Chennai but right now I'm in shimla will be back in January. I travel across India have been to the most coldest to the most hottest places across the country n enjoy the diversity of culture and climate a lot!! In the south people have very dark skin because of the hot climatic conditions but as we move over to colder upper North people tend to have a much paler lighter colored skin but regardless of skin color people are very welcoming of foreigners. The area of mylapore has lot of temples it's comprised of higher bramin or the only vegetarian eating Hindu people

Welcome to Chennai! Just a small note. Hindi isn't the language on the streets in Tamil Nadu (state where Chennai's located) and neither in the other South Indian states like Kerala, Karnataka, Telengana etc. You will find a few Hindi speakers in some places like Hyderabad and parts of Kerala maybe, but mostly they will speak their own languages. @@drathul123 I don't want to get into a competition with you of which place is cleaner or not, but what you see as 'poor' is actually a committed effort of most people in that entire area to maintain the ambience, old houses etc. in the face of the senseless shift to modernism that is decimating old cultures all through India now. There are still many 100+ years old houses intact in this and surrounding areas. Old and decrepit houses can make the area look less modern (what you call 'poor' which I find funny), but what you're seeing is hundreds of years of culture. Great to see you embracing Indian food. Just one thing I would like to mention is that it is not necessary that you will get the most authentic taste only in the eateries in lanes and bylanes. Taste is complex but there is hardly any secret recipe here. You can find same good taste in slightly better dine in places too which have better customer service. Clearly it seemed like serving staff were trying to ignore you. That was not intentional, It was more because of the language barrier and general shyness that they were trying to avoid having to communicate with you..
Omg! I had the exact same experience the first time I was in Chennai. I was so clueless and didn’t understand anything they said. The food is delicious but never ask for more…unless you want buttermilk which they call “more”. You should try custard apple and Sapota/Chikoo if you are ever in a tropical area like Indian subcontinent that has them. They are delicious!
😃 that is truly hilarious and I can understand where ur coming from. 'more' is buttermilk in Tamil and when you say 'more' in English you get the Tamil 'more'.. funnily we club both language together and say 'more more' if we want additional buttermilk

@@harikc872 Because they can't speak Hindi
I'm sorry but this is one area where South India doesn't excel in. Economy, everything else is great. Food is also good but it lacks fraternity unity and hospitality

Why not? Is it dangerous there? Indians might kill you or what? Funny you people behave sometimes 🥴
@@sonic.garden it's very difficult to come across such places even for a local. The only way people find out about these places is through word of mouth. There is no social media advertising for these places. Hence it's quite impressive to see a foreigner visiting these places. Hence my astonishment. Plus a person who goes to dine at VARQ wouldn't want to go to a local mess and a guy who looks for authentic local food wouldn't think about VARQ. That's why i said what i said. Karnataka sambar is a laughing stock or perhaps a mockery to sambar.
Traditional Sambar - TN
Exotic Sambar - AP (Rayalaseema, Coast Andhra ..Guntur, Nellore, Godavari Belt and Krishna Belt)
Mild or coco'nutty Sambar - Kerala
If sambar would able be vocal .. it would scream out loud "don't call them lot a sambar they are not" it is Huli and Kodel.
I have tried all sambar throughout Karnataka: Bengaluru, Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Bidar, Tulu regions..Mangaluru..Udupi..Kundapur..Gokarna...Kukke..Dharmasthala..Kollur, Hubli and Belgaum. Let me tell u, 20 years back when I went there and had the legendary rose milk, I stood stunned for sometime by its taste and thickness. I was atleast 8 kms away from this place. I used to plead my parents for 2 Rupees, then cycle all the way and dunk down a big glass of rose milk. It was totally worth it in summer time.
Keep going!

==================
If you miss your hometown as badly as you claim to,
why don't you go back there?
Good luck.
Hey sandy, I can understand your happiness of explaining things to Max mate. You've explained keenly about the uncertainties. 👏💙

Amazing vlog Max, I just want to point out a cultural tradition in south India. When you went to karpagambal mess, they gave you a banana leaf to eat food using it, and usually people sprinkle a bit of water on it and you clean the leaf using it. I’m myself unsure why we do this, but seeing you dip your entire hand into that water made me laugh and made my day 😂
😂😂
🤣🤣 true
As per my understanding clean the leaf, so that any dirt or foreign particles in the leaf goes off, since the cut leaves are kept in store room and bundle, it has a chance of getting contaminated

There is much more to Chennai ,explore pls. Good to see you using hands to eat like Indians and you are adapting so well. Great .
Pongal is made from rice and husked green gram dhal, which is one of the easiest dhals to digest. It is cooked for a longer time and with more water than normal rice and then a seasoning of maybe pepper, cummin, asafoetida etc
added .
All these ingredients make it easy to digest as well as nutritious
There is a sweet pongal too where jaggery ,cashews ,cardamom powder is added instead of salt .There are many versions all over India called khichdi and is a good food when under the weather as it is light ,easily digested and nutritious.

Do you want to drink "more"? 😂
😃 that is truly hilarious and I can understand where ur coming from. 'more' is buttermilk in Tamil and when you say 'more' in English you get the Tamil 'more'.. funnily we club both language together and say 'more more' if we want additional buttermilk
That's so cute. U r a pro when it comes eating with hands. I really love and appreciate the way u embraced the local culture. Kuddos
You’re so kind and good at heart 🫶🏻 thanks for showing love for India
