My strat for melee was just fighting on horseback normally until phase 2 where I just summoned repeatedly and ran behind hills whenever the comets were out. Feels lame but I couldn’t figure out how to dodge them on horseback.
I beat this fight at level 30 and struggled relatively little, just riding around spamming that one early gravity spell with the gravity staff and summoning to tank.
Yeah, I honestly think the summoning is a bit of a trap; that's way harder than just going up to him and having a horse battle. Still cool looking to have that many summons though.
@@AfroRyan In my experience the extra DPS from the summons, the increased likelihood of a guard break, and the increased chance of the boss not targeting you and giving you more chances to attack/heal makes the fight way easier with summons.
I try the "get in there and see how much dps you can get away with while occasionally panic rolling during long telegraphs" strat at least once vs every big slow boss. vs radahn its really effective because he has very few high damage attacks that can't just go over a players head at point blank. I've fought him in a few playthroughs and I'm not sure I ever even gave him enough time to shoot those meteors in his second phase. This is one of the few cases where aggression is rewarded and patience is punished, which I find kinda interesting.
I've had great fun helping people in coop for Radahn, I think I could solo the guy now even. Striking a pose with a shield physick on before his big attack is always a treat.
So I have to say, while many people dislike this boss, I kind of love it. One of my favorites of the series. I love these strange fights that work very differently from the rest of the game. Avoiding his bolts with precise rolls to grab a few allies is kind of cool to me. Kicking ass with some bros only to watch them go down and get back up is pretty neat. I felt like I had earned my rune and getting congratulated by my fellow fighters was amazing. I loved it all, from presentation to execution, for the oddball he is. My favorite from DS2 was The Ivory King so getting another raid boss was awesome. I just wish your allies were there out the gate or came in differently with some different stats, helping to form the vibe that they were also trying their luck and failing to keep up.
It’s one of the only fights after dying 30 ish times I have learned to really enjoy sinking those hits and when I dodge every single arrow with full flasks when we charge in it’s truly incredible. Unfortunately cuz I had no idea I could just walk up and summon till today I got him down to one hit haha. He will die tonight.

He’s super weak to scarlet rot. That’s pretty much how I beat him as a faith/arcane dragon build. I was lucky enough to kill Ekzykes to get his breath spell. Basically blasted him and fucked off while NPCs chipped away. He removes the condition on his second phase so you have to hit him twice.
Yeah, Radahn sucks for slower hitting melee players in particular. It essentially just becomes a DPS race before he does one of his flail wildly/throw a tantrum type attacks where you WILL die if you're in the middle of it OR he one shots you with his double comet attacks in phase 2.
@@BaldorfBreakdowns except the spread shots during arrow rain which will randomly hit you which you can't dodge because if you get off your horse the arrow rain will kill you These will almost never kill you and usually won't even hit you when running full speed on your horse but it's still dumb.
@@HelixSnake He only does the spread shots when you get over the hill with Alexander. Just stay behind the hill and let your summons force him to draw.
I did it first try... and i even skpped castle morne on accident... guess i just explored a lot. I though calied was a late game zone becuase the mobs were kicking my ass so i just played everywhere else. When i first got to the castle, though the Fort Gael sending gate, the festival of war was not going on and i got fucked by tons of enemies and shit. I mostly cheesed all the enemies and when i got to the boss finaly, it was TWO evergaol bosses at once. I said fuck that and played eslewere and forgot about the castle till way later. I guess i was overleveled. I think the fight was fukin amazing.
it's not a glitch, I guarantee it was a deliberate choice to program that many s into the animation, in addition it doesn't affect PVP because you can't use your horse there anyways. This is a dev that never patched out shit like killing the maneaters through the fog gate, there's no way they're patching the horse s
Nah this fight is really easy, all you have to do is use scarlet rot against him. Specifically Rotten breath dragon attack. He is super weak to that stuff.
This fight is fucking amazing! Anyone who says it sucks, is just bad at the fight. I'm not saying that as an insult, but as a defense of the fight. Yeah, it's hard as hell, but everything he does can be avoided. Edit: This fight doesn't suck, you do. Nice back pedal on the thumbnail.
There's a lot of shit that won't usually instantly kill you but isn't avoidable and is bullshit (like getting hit by the spread shot arrows when running away from the arrow rain) and there's shit that isn't unavoidable but isn't easy to avoid will instantly kill you no matter how much health you have (he has one or two moves involving a quick double swing attack where both hits will easily do enough damage to kill you even with armor and high vigor, and of course once the meteors start going off you have to dodge multiple one hit kill moves). In addition to this, if you don't use horse exploits, getting to him adds a huge delay to the beginning of the fight which adds to the frustration, and if you're trying to use NPCs, there is a luck element where which moves he uses can affect how long the NPCs last during the fight and if you're trying to out DPS him before the meteors go off and his really hard moveset kicks in (which is difficult to learn the counterplay for because all of those moves instakill you and it takes a long time to even get to that phase) then you are basically running a luck based mission on whether or not he does powerful and wide enough attacks to kill all the NPCs which will add a lot of difficulty to killing him off. People's complaints about the fight being bullshit are completely valid even if you can beat the fight consistently by mastering the mechanics. Not every fight is Bed of Chaos levels of irreversible bullshit, some fights are bullshit because certain aspects of the fight make actually learning it well too difficult or take too much time. It takes so long to get to the final phase if you don't abuse horse s and maximize DPS to kill him before the final "fuck you" phase, that you're going to lose a lot of time just trying to figure out how to dodge the meteors and the crazy attacks afterwards which will all one shot you.
In case you want to skip this wall of text: The fight is not bullshit because you can't win it consistently after mastering it, the fight is bullshit because there are so many frustrating elements that make mastering it take way too long unless you can manage to kill him before he starts pulling out the really dangerous moves at the end of the fight. The fight isn't broken, it's just overly frustrating.

I haven't figured a 100% way to avoid the spread shot arrows, but I can avoid them about 90% of the time. The game is new, we still gotta discover the stats. Saying things are unavoidable when it just came out sounds really silly yo me.
Wana hate this fight even more? The NPCs you help prior to this have zero bearing on your allies in the fight. They will show up anyway. I thought this was going to be a fun new way of fighting a boss.. turns out that letting the npcs do anything is just adding more randomness and zero help. Why even bother putting in a new mechanic like this just to have it be totally irrelevant.

The first phase is easily doable without summons but 2nd phase is hectic is fuck without them

Pre nerf trading hits with 20 vig was a viable strat. Just deal enough damage before you run out of flasks.

You can dodge everything. There is no move he does the WILL hit you.
