  • This is the full length trip report with natural sounds and on-trail commentary from a 4-day backpacking adventure that Joey, Scott and I took to the Fires Creek Rim Wildlife Management Area in April 2023. We covered ~33 miles in North Carolina's Nantahala National Forest mostly on the Rim & Chunky Gal Trails.

Fires Creek Rim has its challenges but they are worth it to explore this wilderness!

Great job! Loved the bloopers! You ought to make these a regular feature on your trip reports. Thanks!

Thanks Pop Pop! The bloopers have been a popular feature so I will have to see what I can do

Ok so much to unpack here!
“As long as nothing crazy happens, that’ll be the end of day one” famous last words lol
“We got our 12 in!” Hell yeah we did!
That last nights sunset was epic, and I love how you did the Timelapse outros. Good stuff my man!

Fun times out there man! We did what we needed to do. Those open forests gave us some good timelapses up on the Rim.

    Hi Layne.
Very much enjoyed this view of the Fires Creek Rim area.
I lived in Cumming, GA for 22 years, and always intended to go there.
Appreciate your great video that allows me to see what it is like.
Glad the thunderstorm and wind wasn't worse than expected.
I've not hiked the Chunky Gal trail. Have you hiked it further past where you parked? I've seen its intersectdion with the AT, and (again) wished I'd have hiked it.
You do a great job of narration and filming, and your showing the map at the end of each day is very impressive.
    Keep up the great work.
    God bless!

Thanks Ken, glad that you got to see what this interesting area is like. I’ve not hiked the Chunky Gal trail farther than where we parked. We had a great time out there

Damn, that’s a challenging hike all right. I’ve had some tarps snafus in the night, but nothing like that. Well done gents.
But honestly, I hope we’re gonna get a blooper reel soon of all the outtakes from your morning talks. You’ve done enough group trips that you probably have some good ones. 😂

We should get you out on a trip with these 2 boys - it'd be just what I need, another killer beard around to make me feel even weaker.
I've got no doubt there are enough miscues, missteps and misspeaks to make a whole video!

A friend and I did the Rim a couple of years ago, beginning and ending at Leatherwood Falls. I agree with your assessment that it was not as hard as I expected, based on its reputation. We also hiked it in early spring. We had a rather unsettling encounter the morning after our first night while camped at Big Stamp. It was just after dawn. We were finishing breakfast and packing up when a pickup truck came up the gravel road that ends at the gap. It stopped about 300 feet down the road and a guy got out of the truck and just stood there. It was rather unsettling, so we hurriedly packed and prepared to get on the trail. When I looked again a few minutes later as we were leaving, the truck was gone. We had definitely heard it approaching, so he must have left by coasting backwards down the hill without starting his engine. I suspect we may have scared him more than he scared us, since there were two of us. The situation was odd, since it was just getting light and he must have started up the road before dawn on a Monday. He was the only person we encountered in four days and three nights on the trail.

I think time of year makes a key impact on people's experiences out there, I could see it being a difficult hike in the summertime for sure.
Funny that was the only person y'all saw the whole time, sounds a lil sketchy but he probably just didn't expect to see anyone else out there first thing Monday morning. Doesn't seem to be a ton of traffic out that neck of the woods

Definitely looked and sounded like a meat grinder. I’m sure you guys really made sure your tie downs were in on the second night!
