  • Time to work on rebuilding the T56 transmission in my drift car! 1st, 3rd and 4th gear began giving me trouble midway through last year so I limped through the end of the drift season and pulled the LS1 this winter! To make sure the transmission rebuild gets done right, I headed down to Texas Drivetrain Performance (TDP) in Weatherford, TX.
    I paid full price for all parts and labor, this is not a sponsored video. I want to thank TPD for their detailed and responsive service, and also for letting me vlog the experience to share with you all! :)
    Transmission upgrade parts include:
    carbon kevlar synchro rings
    front and rear seals
    billet 1-2 and 3-4 keys
    bronze 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and reverse shift fork pads
    bronze shifter bushing
    steel 3-4 shift fork
    remachined mainshaft 5-6 journals
    new 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th gear
    new 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6 slider assemblies
    As always, thank you for watching, pounding the like button and subscribing! Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

    I love the T-56 ! I have never owned an automatic car, and have never destroyed a manual transmission. That is because I do not race, but the main reason is, I rev match each gear up and down. Do that, and they will last the life of the car. The advantage of being a pro long haul driver I guess. The bad part of this is, these nice transmission overhaul guys would go out of business.

    • @KameTrick
      @KameTrick  5 років тому

      Doug Stern I hear you! I rev match even when racing, but bought this transmission used with 110K and it was already grinding a bit...I was just glad to get a few years out of it before I had to do the rebuild. It’s doing great ever since, thanks for the comment!✌🏻

    • @SternDrive
      @SternDrive 5 років тому +1

      I'm glad to hear that you rev match, but I have no idea how you can do that when racing. In racing you just jamb it as fast as you can and worry about the synchros later. If you win the race and get the big bucks you can afford to rebuild the transmission next month. Rev matching is for normal street driving....racing....not so much. Most guys have no idea what rev matching is or how to do it, and after destroying a few manual boxes they just get an automatic. Driving a stick is a lost art.

      @KameTrick  5 років тому

      Doug Stern for drag I’m sure that’s true! I do drift and grip where I try to shift quickly but can’t risk a mid-shift or transmission damage ending the day early. Hell toe downshifts help a lot as well :)
      I really enjoyed seeing this rebuild, learned a lot (though I how I don’t have to put that knowledge to use any time soon haha)

    • @SternDrive
      @SternDrive 5 років тому

      I'm a long haul trucker and I drive multispeed transmissions. I always heel and toe for all downshifts in a truck and I do it without the clutch. That does not work so well with my 6 speed car. However I do usually double clutch my car downshifts. I also double clutch my upshifts on cold mornings for the first 2 or 3 minutes. 1st to 2nd is a wide RPM split on my car and the synchros can't handle it with cold oil. Cold double clutching those first shifts makes it so much easier, and my transmission will last the life of the car.

    Maybe a stupid question, but I'm assuming the "don't rest your hand on the shifter" doesn't apply when the shifter isn't directly connected to the trans, i.e. FWD, right? Apart from reinforcing bad behavior lol

    • @KameTrick
      @KameTrick  6 років тому

      ghharg2 that’s a great question, I’m not sure about FWDs...it definitely has to do with that direct connection and the contact area/material that the shift fork pads are made of, for transmissions that use them.
      I’ll ask around and reply if I stumble upon more info, or maybe someone else can share what they know here in the comments.😀

    • @KameTrick

      I’ve been using the trans as assembled ever since, I just raced it last month 👍🏻
      That said, they used silicone on the areas where the housings meet and stuff, all the usual places. The reassembly footage was sped up so maybe something happened off camera…

    • @KameTrick
      @KameTrick  6 років тому +1

      Merlin 2002 that’s a good question, it’s never bothered me at least😅 I think a lot of that is a matter of preference, mine with the stock shifter feels like the stock shifting on most cars, nothing special (or awful)
      Maybe you can drive a Camaro or another car with a T56 before you buy and see how it feels to you? If you were around here I’d let you check mine out 😄👍

    what woulod cause a major vibration in 6th??

    • @KameTrick
      @KameTrick  6 років тому +1

      John Spencer I’m not a transmission expert but check out 04:11
      If you have a T56 and you’re confident it’s only happening in 6th (or 5th and 6th) and it’s not something outside the trans like a tire or driveshaft that’s out of balance/bushing that gets vibration at high speeds, it could be the 5-6 mainshaft journals. Those are a press fit from the factory and evidently they wear down over time and gradually get loose. They’re supposed to require a hydraulic press to remove but you can see Chase effortlessly pull mine out, so mine was definitely going bad (although I hadn’t noticed any major vibrations yet)
      Evidently you can weld additional material onto the shaft and then turn it down in a lathe to the correct clearances again. It could be it’s fully worn down and yours is really loose in there now. Good luck!👍

    • @KameTrick
      @KameTrick  6 років тому

      John Spencer ah right on...I’d be curious if that press fit is worn down the the gear is rattling around on the journal. Texas Drivetrain Performance took good care of me and with an event on the motor (video coming later this week) I think everything is good to go on my project👌
