I'm not much of a fisherman, but I've been looking at the Tenkara system for awhile. It looks like it has an esthetic that is attractive to me. I love the simplicity and the compactness of the gear. Thanks for this video, it has whet my appetite to get one of these.
Been fly fishing and brook fishing in Maine for 40+ years and never ceases to amaze me how these small western streams hold such fish like these. No way you see trout like that, and that many, in brooks in Maine. Jealous!
So I came across your UA-cam channel a few weeks ago, and I’ve been enjoying your videos since. This one was especially fun to watch. I watched a video a few days ago where you described the various types of lands available for ‘free camping’. You also provided various means of access to those lands. The lands that you fish at are mostly what types of lands that you have access to. Keep fishing!!
Can’t say I necessarily care for tenkara itself but I do love fly fishing & fishing in general. Watching you catch these pretty natives in scenery like this is awesome for a kid from Ohio that has one stocked trout stream near by and it doesn’t even compare to this... Defs will continue watching these dope vids.
A fishing day of a dream: autumn time, a most beautiful creek, two species of trout at least, with marvellous colours that are good sized...man how I envy you!!! What a fall day surrounded by pristine nature and looking forward what that pool has to offer. Will It be a cutthroat, a rainbow, a brown or a brooky?
Man, Ive gotten into small creeks with little 5-10 inch cutthroat going crazy like that, but never seen that many quality fish popping around like that, epic day and great spot!
Incredible...I've had pools where I've taken 3 or 4, and considered myself lucky; the quality of the fish were amazing too. It sounds like you're like me - you like catching the natives best.
I think we call this whip fishing in the UK but we don't usually fly fish tactics with whips, we usually use very light weight float rigs but there are also pole / whip set ups for carp. what a cracking venue to go fishing thanks for posting.
I’m originally from Oregon lived 40 years there . Now in North Dakota I’ve fished everything here not impressed at all. Rather be fishing a small stream any day than fish here anymore. Me and my wife are buying a couple of theses tenkara poles! Can’t wait to try them out…
Hey Tristan, thanks for sharing your Tenkara adventures. As a hardened fly fisherman, I have resisted trying for a while now, but watching your adventures has motivated me to take the leap. Thanks for the inspiration! Geeky little fact, that hook on the lower lip of the rainbow is called a kype. Kypes evolve from the lower jaws of some male trout and are a sign of sexual maturity.
Thanks Bethany! If you prefer traditional fly fishing, more power to you. I'm not here to convince anyone to try tenkara. It's jusy how I like to fish, and I like sharing my adventures 👍
@@TenkaraAddict I think I will love Tenkara as much as the traditional sport, and it will definitely open up opportunities to fish waters that were less approachable with the traditional gear. Very excited to try. Ordered a rod last week. Thanks again for the inspiration. Your love and enthusiasm shows.
Awesome! Cutties rule! I know exactly where this is. My videos of same place are all labeled "Tenkara Paradise", one published Oct 2015 and the other Sep 2016. I have fished the ponds area you talked about and it was funny, because it was all Brookies but probably one of the most beautiful places I have ever fished and full of trout. Your new state is a fly fishing paradise like Utah.
You could fish this pool for a long time testing strategies and methods. The whole thing, from where the two flows come together to the tail out just look great! I would be here for the better part of the day. Fish it for a while, then have lunch, fish it a little more. Move to another location for a while then come back. It's a rare find. Thanks for the video.
Nope, I fish a wet fly that is occasionally weighted. The gear I use is listed in the description of each video, and I go into more detail on the "Gear I Use" page on my website. Thanks for watching.
@@TenkaraAddict Great video, great spot, and thank you for not disclosing the locations you go to as I'm in Idaho guy that has seen of lot of trophy fishing creeks and lakes destroyed from telling just a few people. Specially since Idaho is the number one destination were people are moving to in the entire country right now. Great video again ...thank you.
Awesome video! It would be great if you can share a little info about the flies you are catching on. I’m thinking about getting into Tenkara so that info would be great to consider. I know there are traditional flies but I also know folks use all types of flies Tenkara fishing.
Even though I go to a lot of great places to fish, I am a non fisherman because I don't eat fish. But you make this catch and release look like a lot of fun. I have never seen anyone fish without a reel. It looks like it makes things a LOT simpler and easier to pack etc. I never saw you remove a hook, is that just because you didn't video that or is there another reason? For us potential new fisherman, please do a teaching video. I enjoyed this very much, it looks like so many places I've been. Thanks for a very nice video.
I'm the same way. I don't eat fish. And I never include removing the hook because it's just not that interesting and it's the same every time. Hook removes very easily. Thanks for watching!
Near the end of the video you said you saw fish rising. Do you ever try dry flies? I don’t recall a time seeing you use dry. Anyway that spot was dope with some great fish.
I prefer a 360-400 cm rod for that stream. Just my personal taste, but the Mizuchi is a little too short for optimum control in that wide of a stream. It looks like you have a Nirvana 400 sticking out of your backpack. That rod would be great on that stream. BTW, there is some really nice water half a mile downstream from there ;o)
Beautiful scenery and fish! It looks like the tenkara rod is perfect for small streams.... How many feet is your Pole and how long of a leader do you use with what lb. Test ?
Yep, tenkara was designed to fish this kind of creek and smaller. Works great. This particular rod extends up to 11 feet. The tippet is 5x, which is rated roughly to 5 lbs.
These videos inspired me to buy a Tenkara rod. So much fun ! Here is the very first ever Tenkara fish I caught. ua-cam.com/video/guguKBcOlZ8/v-deo.html
2:05 "oh no, I'm caught". I appreciate you being candid about your mistakes on stream. We all have them. As a fellow ambassador of Tenkara, its important to learn from our mistakes. There is a better method to net fish. Ask people you trust or watch some japanese anglers techniques. It will make you better in your streamcraft and will help you avoid missing a fish of a lifetime. Cheers.
The sort of day we dream of all winter. The sort of day we remember the rest of our lives. Is there anything you find frustrating about Tenkara angling?
Sharp teeth trout feed on smaller fish and flies, the dull teeth fish feed on crustaceans flies ect. Well that's the way it is in my part of the world.
It always make me sad when I see trout stocked over a healthy population of good sized wild trout. It is often necessary back East due a to small number of suitable waters but doesn't make sense in the West.
Yea cause there are only a few small creeks in Idaho! What a tool ! Dont worry i stop watching when u tried to net the nice rainbow and beat it over the rocks and with your net.
What kind of guy tells the whole damn world exactly where his fishing spots are? Dont get me wrong. I'd love to know. But I wouldnt be fool enough to ask. Much less press the point and insult a man.
I live in idaho and appreciate that he is not giving out the locations. It’s kind of hard to find bad fishing here. Just have to be a little adventurous and get that fly in the water.

You're right, Western anglers are spoiled.
Never heard of Tenkara fishing til today. Thanks for the demo.
Thanks for watching 👍
Just found your channel today and I’m blown away, you deserve so many more subscribers. Keep it up man, tight lines🤙🏼
Thanks!
A very enjoyable video, loved this creek ,great few hours fishing thanks for taking us along with you.

So jealous! You manage to find some phenomenal fishing spots! Gorgeous crystal clear water too!
This spot surprised me with how beautiful the water was. And the quality of the fish, too. Thanks Steve!

A 14 in. Rainbow. Nice job.
Of course, a third of that was

an underbite!

Nice water crystal clear
It's a beautiful stream, for sure. Thanks for watching
Those were some Dandy trout! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks John 👍
Good looking creek. Love Idaho.
It's a pretty great place!
That is a beautiful stream!!!
Sure is!
You ever keep a few Rainbows in creeks like that? To enjoy the fish and also help out the native Cutts
No, I don't eat fish
7:33 - Literally said "whoa..." out loud.
Nice video my friend. I just subbed to ur channel 👏🏻👌🏻from Denver Colorado
Thanks 👍

I don't disagree! For better or worse, I find myself liking to fish with basically one rod, and that is currently the Mizuchi. Thanks Tom!

Gotta say the cutthroats are just classier than rainbows.
Fun stuff, the rainbow looked like its mouth was deformed.
I agree. It was longer than what I think is normal. Thanks Gordon.
Is tenkara fly-fishing easier than traditional fly-fishing?
Yes. Thanks for watching 👍
Yeah. Its easier. Very little between you and the fish. Pretty much zero drag on your drifts. In a heavy pocket water area like this, its deadly.
Have you used Tenkara in the High Uintas? How did it work out?
Yes, it works great for the little Uinta streams.

I use a GoPro Hero 7 to film.

No. If it was frustrating I wouldn't do it, or I'd do a different kind of fishing. I enjoy everything about it.
Dealing with wind does require some modifications to your presentation. Other than that, its a joy.

Nope
Favorite moment @2:30..whale fishing illegal
I have never heard of a "cut-throat" trout. And why do they call it a
" cut-throat "?
It's a common type of trout in the western US. It's called cutthroat because it has an orange/red slash under it a jaw. Thanks for watching.
Never heard of "pool" until today. Does that mean that you're fishing on billiard's table?
The best pool is where I catch my biggest fish.
👍

How about saying where u are? Why bother watching if we dont know where?
I list the state in the video description. If you need to know exactly where I fish, feel free to stop watching.
Yea cause there are only a few small creeks in Idaho! What a tool ! Dont worry i stop watching when u tried to net the nice rainbow and beat it over the rocks and with your net.
