I got this antenna this week after waiting for about 2 months on back order directly from Chamaeleon, it is expensive and not in everyone's budget. Chamaeleon makes stuff for the military and dose not discount much for the Ham market. I am impressed with it in the vertical config on my first 3 days with it out in the park. Used the short wire as a counter poise laid on the ground. Talked across the country on 100 watts. Good to see the other reviews about the threads on the whip stripping, I'll be extra careful with that. I have been using their Ecomm 2 end fed, it is is also a great antenna and versatile. Chameleon is not cheap but it is very good.
I have an MPAS 2.0 and I love it. I do POTA exclusively and my last 12 activation have been with the MPAS vertical. Very easy and quick to set up, just drive the stake into the ground and screw the two pole assemblies and the counterpoise- done. I have not even taken out the wire portion of the MPAS, maybe one day I'll give it a try but the need for masts (or trees) makes this a less desirable option. While working POTA activations, I have made several DX contacts (Hungary and Scotland) with the vertical elements of the MPAS and have no trouble reaching stations all across the country and Southern Canada from central Texas. For POTA, portable or field day this antenna system is tops.
What radio are you using with it? Do you use an external tuner? I worry about SWR if I couple this with my IC-705
Jason, the manpack portable is designed to be used while wearing the backpack, like in movies showing a radio man in a platoon with the antenna and radio on his back and a handset type microphone.
I love mine have only used the vertical but want to try the other configs
I cant wait. My MPAS 2.0 arrives tomorrow and I plan on putting it to use ASAP with my IC-705. I was actually thinking the same thing, all my other antennas, including my DX Commander Expedition will be stored right in the same backpack, that way when I want to do a slower, or Inverted V or L, I already have a spare mast in there to set it up with.
I use a 3 rifle range bag for all my portable antenna gear, buddipole and this, plus all the cables and what not. Works pretty good.
Similarly, I picked up a bag for a telescope.

Had this for over a year the best backpack portable antenna I have, is it worth the cost as its not cheap, yes worth every penny great video :)
I use an MPAS 2.0 in a semi-permanent ground mounted vertical configuration with the capacitance hat and 12-radials in my backyard with excellent results. It's about 16' from my 2-story house and about 40' from overhead service power lines. There is a lot of QRM in my suburban area, but it is effective across most HF bands.
As always great demonstration Jason. I would love to see a video on your take on the CHA CAP HAT that can be added to this system.
I use the inverted v for most of my pots activations. Works great. Just have a tuner and it works great.

I love that bag. Holds a ton. My ONLY complaint is that they use plastic for the connectors. I'm looking into replacing them with metal. I keep my CHA TDL, CHA EMCOMM IIIp and 10M push-up mast, 705 in a Harbor Freight case, Powerfilm Lightsaver Max, a Bioenno 12Ah battery, coax, analyzer, etc. Pretty much a grab and go solution for POTA.@
I have the MPAS 2.0. Used it in 2021 Field Day as a Vertical and Inverted V. Made contacts all over the east cost. Used it with a Icom 7100 and a Tuner. Looks like they have upgraded the back pack since I bought mine. The Mil Whip Extension does not fit inside my pack. There are straps on the outside of the pack to hold the Extension. Also bought the top hat option but have not had a chance to try it.
I used a Half Wave End fed and 5 watts on field day and made contacts all over the United States. What was the difference in making contacts all over vs. just one coast, the antenna.
I've got it... I like it. The lickidy split vertical is my favorite.

Indeed - You should look into the CHA TDL which can be achieved with the MPAS by adding the CHA HUB KIT. It's a modular system like the Lego Block. You create your own antenna system according to your specific needs with the same antenna kit.
I already had a 25ft mast and I use that and a tree or structure for additional support... Mostly NVIS for RACES ops

Nothing new here, One shorted star picket and a telescopic squid pole on top of it plus some light wire on a roller and some coax and WALLA, all done at a low cost ( and better height might be achieved with 1.8 to 29ft telescopic squid pole, a great option, they are light, easy to carry, durable and cheap as). If you got some extra coin ( most of us do not) or can not be bothered making your own than go for it (the quality won't let anyone down), just remember, on a beach most any configuration you put up ( and tune ) will work very well.
(i tried wire dipole directly on top of the beach sand about 35 ft from the water and got impressive dx, lol)

Распологаю радиально - "звездой". Работает 10-15-17-20-30-40 метровых диапазонах. Работал /P, /QRP с Австралией, Новой Зеландией, Германией, Израилем, США, Канадой.
На диапазоны ниже 40 метров, а точнее 80 метров и тем более 160 метров, низко подвешанные диполи "превращаются" в антенну зенитного излучения. В полевых условиях эффективнее "наклонный луч", заброшенный на дерево поивыше, + противовес 1/4 в сторону предпологаемых корреспондентов, пока не нашёл ничего.

I've found that adding radials in the vertical configuration greatly improves performance, albeit at the cost of increased SWR.
Hi, I'm considering this antenna for POTA, but I wonder if you could explain your definition of 'performance'. I seems as though your experience with it requires a higher SWR (lower radiated power) to gain performance. What does that mean exactly, thanks :).
@@gsahookah599 this is all theory, and i'm no expert, so take what I say with a bit of salt and experiment for yourself. However, this has been my experience and understanding...
The MPAS is built to be a system that is quickly deployable on several bands with minimum setup time and equipment required. To make said equipment "resonant," a transformer is used to bring the impedance on the desired freqs to within tolerable levels. Transformers all end up having a bit of loss, with that power being eaten up as heat. This power lost doesn't return to the radio, and may give the illusion that power is being radiated instead of "burned off" via a lower SWR.
Vertical antennas typically require a sufficient ground radial system to be effective, and give something the radiated signal to "bounce off of" similar to a mirror. Without a sufficient radial system, a ground mounted vertical may in fact radiate satisfactory power, only to have the ground right beneath the antenna soak up much of it.
Between power lost in heat and ground losses, its easy to have a very low SWR and not effectively radiate a signal (remember, a dummy load gives a 1:1 SWR and radiates practically nothing). Another thing to remember is that a slightly higher SWR doesn't necessarily translate to massive power losses being radiated. A 2.5:1 SWR only relates to approximately an 18% loss in power radiated. There are so many variables that its impossible to tell you exactly how many to use, or if you NEED to use them at all. I have personally found that I get stronger signal reports when using a number of different radials with the MPAS (and I also adjust the vertical to be close to what a 1/4 wave vertical would be, so IMHO I am losing less power to the higher SWR than I would to ground/heat loss and a lower SWR at the radio.

In configuration 1, Manpack Portable, i think it assumes the bag is on your back and you are using it mobile, hence why it doesnt have the extension. Maybe they assume youre walking around the desert where there is no tree cover.

I carry my 705 in the MAPAS 2.0 backpack most all the time. Got room for that and a Bioenno battery. I do leave the wire antenna spool portion of the MPAS in the car but I do it because I choose to not because it will not fit. As a matter of fact I think the bag is a bit TOO big. The MPAS 2,0 system is very versatile and ..... it works!

Thanks! 🙂 Seems like this would also be a good choice for absolute newbies (like myself) who want to make sure their portable antenna really works and thus do not want to risk building one on their own. Do you know if the MPAS requires and external antenna tuner even when using it with a Yaesu FT-710 (that has its built-in automatic tuner)? 🤔
Depending on what configuration you use, it shouldn't require a tuner at all. But the internal tuner with the FT-710 can be used with this antenna, no problem.

I would have rather seen this test done in a grassy field. The ocean gives us an exaggerated view of this antenna kits capabilities. I love the concept, I know Chameleon makes quality gear (I have their end fed Encomm3) but would like the activation to be under less optimized conditions. This is a pricey bit of kit.

FYI I don't know much of anything about radios.
"Man-pack" infers the operator is wearing the pack containing the radio, battery, tuner and antenna. The operator simply tosses out the counterpoise when ready to transmit. Granted the hybrid micro doesn't screw into the radio like most military HF man-pack radios but securing it to the pack somehow is the next best thing for portable HF.
I am a new Ham. Your videos are helpful. I recently purchased a Yaesu FTDX10 (largely based on your recommendation). Will the internal tuner in my Yaesu FTDX10 handle this or will I need an external tuner? I am hoping to do POTA. I am looking at the following two CHA products: CHA MPAS (Modular Portable Antenna System) 2.0 $625 or CHA MCC POTA Heavy $674.00? Or do you recommend I try something else instead?
If you setup this antenna as the instructions tell you, you won't need a tuner at all. The antenna itself is adjustable to be resonant on multiple bands. The internal tuner of the FTDX10 does work well, but with a resonant antenna, you won't need it.

ABR is my to go coax. They can do custom lenghts and ends. For us in H-Town, they can do will call. Give them a few days.
ABR is the brand of coax used on the ham station at Houston TranStar. I figured if it was good there, it is good for my station.
It is a great antenna, but the brass threads of the MIL Whip 2.0 stripped. I contacted Chameleon. They said they had replacement base cap and could send it to me. I sent them my address and never heard back. 2 weeks later I emailed them again and said that there would be a cost for the part & shipping. I agreed because I wanted to use my MPAS 2.0 in the vertical setup and had them send me an invoice via Paypal. I paid the invoice in Paypal and been waiting for a month now for the part. I've emailed them since and haven't gotten a reply.
I had an issue right after I got my MPAS 2.0 with the shock cord in the MIL Whip 2.0 snapping after using the antenna once (yes I folded back down correctly). Their customer service was great with that. Not sure what's going on with them now. Maybe someone from Chameleon Antenna will see this and help me out.

@@HamRadio2 Used mine like 30 times??? For the majority of all of my activations. Somewhere along the way the threads of the MIL whip’s base cap got stripped. I paid them like $18 for the replacement part & shipping and haven’t heard anything back for 4 weeks.
They should have at least sent you an email letting the you know that piece was on backorder and it would be X number of weeks before it was shipped. No matter how good your product is, bad customer service will cost you sales. Maybe they have shifted all their resources to sales and production? After watching videos, it seems some of their assemblies are outsourced. Hopefully they will be caught up soon.

It's expensive. Been thinking about buying one and screwing it into a WRC tripod base. Banging huge spikes into the ground is often futile here.

This antenna is 12db or 2 full "S" units down in transmit power compared to a resonate antenna. This fact is not disputed even by Carl. I can do almost everything with a end fed half wave that can be done with this very expensive antenna. There has been nothing new when it comes to antennas for a very long time. Some of these "new" antennas (with their top secret epoxy filled cylinders....LOL) that have come out will 100% not perform as well as a simple end fed. I really wish that all the U Tube radio channels would start using a reference antenna to compare all the new wiz bang antennas against. They all radiate....Which one does a better job or at the least the same for 1/10th the price. I'm really over glowing reviews unless it can be proved that these very expensive antennas are really better. I'll stay with my Buddistick and home made 49-1 end fed. I understand that reviews are a part of what make the channel popular. I just want to see a reference antenna used so that people can actually see if spending $550.00 vs. $50.00 for an end fed half wave makes the wiz bang antenna worth the extra $500.00. I'm betting it doesn't. Anything else is misleading and dishonest. These antennas seem to be marketed to the "New" ham who does not have the knowledge and experience yet.. Those that have been around for a while know the truth when it comes to antennas. That repackaging an old design and adding $300 - $400.00 to the price tag does not make it work any better than the tried and true. I think that is the reason that most U Tubers doing park activations seem to stick with the end fed half wave. The are small, light and they work. All portable antennas are a compromise antenna. Some compromise more than others. As we used to say in the car world "If it don't run, chrome it". Stop and think...You can buy a Ziegu G90 and an end fed for less than this antenna. Jason, be the first to start using a "Reference" antenna when doing reviews. You'll make the masses happy....The antenna producers not so much.
@john Kaelberer Very true. Some of the poorest signals I've heard coming from POTA are running a FT-891 and the CHAMPAS-MOUSE 2.0. Wonder how this compares to the WTF-1 that W6LG talks about?
I don't really disagree with anything you said except for your sentiment. The theory that "we should always use the cheapest equipment available" is also misleading and dishonest, and it isn't a thought process I agree with. This antenna offers several solutions that you can't do with an EFHW, such as a true vertical configuration with a solid mast, plus coax with a choke. Is it better? Nah, probably not, in fact it is designed around an EFHW, it looks like, to me. But this overall theme I often see in comments in lots of videos is, "wow I can do that for alot cheaper" - my answer is...well, then go do it. Nothing wrong with using what you want to use, but if the only reason you are using it is because you don't want to spend money on Ham Radio - the greatest hobby in the world - then I don't follow that way of thinking.

@@HamRadio2 I see what you are saying...but...not all of us have the $$$ to spend on an antenna like this one that is really not all that special and very expensive. It does many things OK, but not great. If I'm going camping, I want an axe, real knife, bow saw, not just a Swiss Army Knife. The money could be used for far better purposes. New Radio, New and better coax, New portable pole, Solar-Portable power, an antenna that performs excellent for the type of antenna it is, and so many other things that will make a difference in actual operation. Part of the hobby is being lost, the new idea is that you can buy contacts with money (which is true in some cases, but the product must actually perform), aka, the newest, coolest looking antenna to hit the market that look good on the surface but leave a lot on the table. I have no problem spending $$$ if the product works very well. There has really be nothing new in years as to antenna design. The Hex beam is the last I can think of. I get so much more satisfaction in making my own or improving a good antenna that I bought. These types of antennas tend to be marketed to the new ham. Those who have been around for a while, looking for portable will go with something that works like the end fed half wave or a Buddipole etc. Not the jack of all trades, master of none. This antenna will just end up in the corner after the person who buys it discovers it is not as effective as a proven antenna designed for the type of operation you are doing that results in more and clearer contacts. This is after all what the hobby is really about. And please, start using a "Reference Antenna" when doing antenna reviews. It will give a true picture of the performance of the antenna being reviewed. Otherwise there is nothing to really tell you how effective an antenna is. Prime example of another new wiz bang antenna, the "Go To" antenna. Just a resistor with a wire and really poor performance. Yet it has got a glowing review from another channel. What is "Dishonest" is not giving the whole story in reviews. I know you don't get free stuff if you are really honest about a product, but it sure will pay off with the people who watch and and support your content if a review actually had a reference to be compared to....in real time, A-B, A-B. Thanks for listening to my rant. I feel it's important to have all the facts possible. One question. If I potted a 49-1 balun in a fancy looking cylinder, added some extra bling, do you think I could market it for $350.00 ??? No different than what is being done by several company's who just put an old design into something that shines pretty and market it as something new. Only difference would be that mine would actually be a darn good antenna.....Just Say'in. Check out the review "Camelon MPAS vs. Wolf River Silver Bullet" by KB9VBR. After watching his review, if I were to buy the MPAS, it would only be because I like the looks of it or just want to play, not because I want the best performance. This is much more my idea of a review. Were I still to purchase the MPAS after viewing Michael's review, I would not feel so violated when it did not perform all that great,
You can use the 73' wire or the 25' as radiator or you can use both and make an OCF antenna that will behave EXACTLY like the CHA EMCOMM III P. You could also install the CHA HYBRID MICRO on a TRI-MAG mount put the MICRO + MIL EXT + MIL WHIP right in the middle of your car rooftop and an operate from anywhere where mounting in the ground would be impossible. You could cut your own wire length to make your OWN dipole with the MICRO as transformer. You could use 265' of wire and create a circular loop elevated at about 15' to 20' and create a SKYLOOP for 80M you could do the same with 140' and make one for 40M, you could put the MICRO between the MIL EXT and the MIL WHIP and get a vertical dipole for 6M, you could install the MICRO on the MIL EXT and use the MICRO and install the 73' as radiator and the 25' as counterpoise and now you've a NVIS antenna that will work on 40m, 60m and 80m... Use your imagination and you'll see what you can do with it!

I expect more from this channel and other serious ham radio channels. if you don’t want to go through the hassle of setting it up on the back pack- just say it. Don’t lie about it and use a camera angle to tell the lie.
Furthermore even if you did connect the antenna to the back pack, so what? Just a picture is all we get? Not gonna try running it?
What’s the point in showing us the setup if you don’t atleast hook it to a radio and spin the dial atleast.
As I said in the video, you have to have something in the backpack to weigh it down, if you use it in this configuration. It is useful in a rocky or concrete area where you can't use the ground stake.
Doing an activation with the antenna is next on my list - this video wasn't intended for that. I have hundreds of other videos where I do activate with various antennas.
Rather than looking down your nose and pointing fingers, perhaps asking me to make another video with details you would like to see is the way to go. I have certainly done this before for other viewers, but usually not when false and ignorant accusations are made.
It's just like everything else they sell, grotesquely overpriced!!! I have a F-Loop, as far as I'm concerned it's not worth throwing off a bridge !!!

$600, cant handle 100 FT8, needs trees or tripods, oh snap
$500 for a pole and some coax... smh
