Great point about laminated sides. I have a nice Japanese built Takamine P4DC with solid ovankol back and laminated sides… sounds great!
Takamine is an excellent guitar for workhorse reliable play everynight not too expensive and sound good too

How does this compare to a Martin d12?
Don't know about a d12 but played it against a D10 and sounded much richer in tone!
