I was thinking just yesterday about what would be the perfect guitar and bass DI box to get …. And here we are, not only first Eric Valentine video in what seems like forever but also what looks like a perfect DI AND re-amp box. Hope I can get my hands on one of those. ❤️
Looks like a great solution for tracking guitar. BTW. Miss the videos. This is the best channel on UA-cam for audio engineers wanting to learn more. Hope to see new content in the near future. Thank you for you willingness to share your craft.
Just built a little FX rack + Pedal board and had to customize with a lot of soldering to get something that can do the same. In my searching I was surprised there was not a product from Radial that does this. Congrats on being first to market. Looking' good man, excited for more updates!
YES!!!! This box corrects the biggest pitfall of the Redeye. I am constantly fiddling with the trimmer on that thing to get unity gain from my carefully calibrated 0VU tracks out of the DAW and into the amps.
This is THE box I've been waiting for. I've always hated taking DIs for reamping later, knowing that the mic amp is colouring the sound from the DI, whether it's playing back at the right level, is the impedance correct, are there tonal shifts happening... this is what I've been waiting for. Thanks EV, you're the man! I just wish we didn't get stung with the price in the UK. US $895 is the equivalent of £661 at today's exchange rate, but the shelf price here is £995 ($1345!)
Man I can't tell you how happy I was to see you uploaded to UA-cam! Been too long!! Really appreciate all the effort you put into this channel, I know you must be a busy guy, so I hope this brings you joy and fulfillment. :)
You are absolutely right. Technically, it definitely is not exactly the same. Once patched through the GB-Tracker, there is now a Class A discreet active DI and Transformer between the guitar and the amp. The claim "It sounds exactly the same" is slightly hyperbolic :) I think I can claim that, whatever differences there might be, are inaudible. I did a lot of listening tests with this thing. I tried it with different amps, guitars, basses, high gain, clean, semi-distorted (which in my experience is the least forgiving under these circumstances). the GB-Tracker is the first DI/Reamp chain that I can not pick out in a blind listening test. Hopefully, if you get a chacne to try one, it will do the same for you :)
Thank you for the share Brother! Impeccable timing as I have not yet purchased a DI / re-amp solution yet. I can't wait for the deep dive video! Keep Doing That Voodoo That You Do!
Missed ya dude can't wait to see what you've been up to with the new studio and everything! If I had more money I have a few of these and and a few of you mic pre's but for now hope to just afford one MPDI-4 sometime in future 🤙😁

Hi Eric! I'm a huge fan of yours! Thanks so much for this youtube channel. It's exactly my dream content. Some of it I can watch on my phone, some I need better speakers for. It's awesome. Would you consider doing a fun episode of "Turd polishing with Eric Valentine"? Where you take home studio (scarlet/cheap mics/not slash or grace) quality tracks and valentinize them as best you can? That would be so fun to watch! Also, are slash and the gang pissed that your new mix of By the Sword absolutely mops the floor with the one you first delivered? Lol Thanks again for doing this channel. It means so much to so many of us! P.s. my favorite record of yours is Louder Now!
M160's have become one of my favorite mics, among others. What I love about ribbons in general is that whatever source they're on sounds like a record before they've been processed. AEA have been a serious help for my mic locker collection.
@@Mrbambony Did you buy yours as a pair? I have a "pair" that I use as a paired mics, but they were purchased separately with serial numbers that are around 100 mics apart from each other. I'm not even sure you can get paired M160's?
Congrats on the new product....looks cool! Looking forward to hearing about that RCA console. If I'm not mistaken, the preamps in that console are what DW Fearn based his preamps on, and those things are KILLER.
This is awesome! I’d love for this to be developed even further to where I could record both the guitar DI and an FX loop return for the pedals that are then routed before the first amplifier preamp. Possibly with a switch for sending either the guitar DI or FX loop return to the additional satellite chains. This way I can return to different stages of the signal chain for experimentation and blending. Or maybe I should just continue to become a better engineer that can commit to timeless tones 😆
Thank you 😄 when you have time can you please show how you mixed the vocals for the Story So Far Proper Dose album. It’s my dream to make vocals sound like that. Thank you so much and I hope all is well
Hey Eric! Congrats on everything. Super excited to get mine in the mail tomorrow!!! Thinking about all the possibilities with this beautiful device I wondered if it could be used to reamp say a vocal on the DAW setting through a guitar pedal and send the output of the pedal back into the DI circuit of the GB tracker in turn back into the DAW? All the best!
Yes! This can totally be used as a guitar pedal hardware insert on your DAW. The reamp side will make the signal happy for going into the pedal and the DI side will get it back in :)
This thing sounds incredible… now if we could just get you to release a drum sample library.. imagine how incredible everyone’s records would sound if we had Eric MF Valentine drums
Hey Brother, looking forward to the next video share and hearing the new album! Also, not all of us can find or even afford an RCA BC-2B Tube mixing console. I think it would be awesome if you would capture an IR from yours and offer it in a software package by Waves or some other of your choice or even through UTA! When you do, please give us a video of the capture process. I am of the belief that it will pay you dividends! "Keep Doing That Voodoo That You Do!"
Longtime subscriber here. Idea for a new video - Breakdown of the recording of How's It Going to Be by 3EB - Specifically the autoharp sound. I'm a guitarist/engineer with a home studio. I just bought an autoharp and am curious about the process you used to record it. Thanks! PS. I'd watch a video on any of their songs
Great to see another vid Eric! When will the GBT be available in the UK? Also, can't wait for the continuation of the Vermont build series! Rock on.....
Love this! Oh and also, why can't gear like the RCA console be recreated for us common folk?!? I mean I get it, but frig. The way you describe it in this vid, everyone should have one!
I'm gonna try to make that happen. recreating old gear like that properly is just kind of expensive. The main thing is the transformers. The tubes in the RCA console are somewhat common so those would not be crazy expensive. I want to do a device that is a single channel that has one channel of the mic pre and one channel of the program summing buss in it. You need that whole chain to get the amazing effect of the console.
The only thing that would make this more perfect is to somehow insert a delay switch/knob that allows you to delay the di signal to match that of a close mic’d amp, for if someone wanted to match a di with an amp sim, or for bass tracking.
Great video and thanks for the update Eric. So I understand this correctly: No need to to run the DI signal through a mic pre? Just patch it directly to the line input of the interface?? I need one in Europe. Any idea when this will be available here? Also would it be possible to have one device with the output on the back as well? Take care and enjoy finishing the album.
Yes! The GB Tracker is line level out. No mic pre needed. It also alows us to make sure the DI side matches the reamp side exactly. This one is setup with the Balanced XLR connections on the back and the 1/4" guitar/amp connections on the front. If you really need a feed on the back you could use a satellite to do it. Apologies for the lack of availability in Europe right now. We hit a snag trying to find a good power supply for European voltages. It is figured out but we are waiting for all the be supplies to be sent to us. Everyting takes forever in COVID times :( You could get one now and use a step down transformer with it or we could direct you to a place where you could buy a proper European power supply.
Mr Valentine, correct me if I am wrong... doesn't the GB Tracker+Satellite combo double as a guitar extender: performer in one room, combo amp in a separate room? Thank you for your products!
Cool view into what you guys are up to. Not following the Ethernet extenders- is this A to D or an analog extender? If analog, what allows this length without excessive loss and noise?? GB Tracker looks great!
The Ethernet boxes are just cable adapters. They allow you to use CAT6 cable as microphone cable. It turns out that Ethernet cable is quite good for mic cable. The Cables I am using are actually 150'. I measured the capacitance and it was about 2000 pF. That's about 13pF/Foot. That is better than most mic cable. It really works great.
@@mrwev that does make sense since recent spec Ethernet is shielded with high twist count and has to be rated for super high frequencies. I imagine that old RCA mixer is 600 ohm input impedance and the ribbons probably like that!!
So glad it's finally out! Would the satellites work if you had the GB Tracker in the control room and the satellite in the live room? or does the Satellite need to be directly connected to the GB tracker to work properly? Thanks!
Yes the Satellite can be in another room. That is the intended use :) You can send signal from the the "TO SATELLITE" output on the GB-Tracker or you can send it directly from a DAW output. The advantage of sending signal from the GB-Tracker is that the signal being sent will follow the "LIVE" vs "DAW" switch selection. The Satellite can also operate as a stand alone reamp as well.
Man we have missed you Eric! the GB tracker is so crucial, nice job on that and OMG I can't wait to hear and learn more about that RCA tube console. I would love to hear some drums being captured or ran through it. Is that the console that was used in Motown? the Motwon guitar DI or whatever they called it? can't wait until your back making videos for us again
I dont know if the RCA console was used for any early Motown stuff but I do know that the model I am using is what was installed at SunRecords when Elvis did his early stuff, Houndog etc. It sounds incredible. There might be a tube mic preamp product in UTA's future :)
@@mrwev ohhh man that's incredible! Its crazy I feel like every time I started getting into some new recording tools you have already been doing that. Same wave lengths ha. Ribbon mics and tube pres. Tube pre from you uhoh that sounds bad for my bank account haha 😂
It is a totally fair question because there are many devices out there that will definitely do, in general, what the GB-Tracker does. The first issue I have always had with all of the options I have tried out there, is that they always seem to alter the sound a bit. I'll find an amp/guitar combo I like and then when I plug the same guitar through the DI/Reamp chain it doesnt sound the same anymore. I have to start adjusting things on the amp to get it to feel like it did when I had the guitar plugged directly in. The GB-Tracker is the only one I have used that I can not pick out in blind listening tests when comparing direct to the amp vs going through the GB Tracker. From what I have seen, none of the other options have calibrated/detented level controls that allow you to maintain exact unity gain through the DI/Reamp path. The GB Tracker is designed to make it very easy to do that. All of the other options require you to adjust the gain by ear to try and match the gain of plugging directly in. With the GB Tracker the workflow is simplified a bit. Having the DAW "TO" and "FROM" on the back of the GB-Tracker allows you to switch between playing live and reamping a recorded performance without having to re-patch things. Having used the DI/Reamp workflow for a long time, those were the issues that I felt needed to be addressed just to make that whole approach both sound better and more effortless. Thank you for the question!
Is Eric really micing up instruments in those rooms with hard walls??? How the hell is he controlling reflections? I did see the episode about his control room and all the acoustic absorption there. But, didn't see any of that in the room with the B3 rotary amp.
nice one looks like n awesome product! Hey were those Rat Sound cat 5 splitter boxes or did you just make your own ones? I need an Eric Valentine / Dave Rat audio geekery video in the future would be cool to see you guys nerd out for 10 hours or so haha
The ones I am using are these - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B088FFMLG2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1. They are super affordable and work great.
@@mrwev I've missed your smiling face Eric! No issues using the ribbon mics with the long ethernet runs? And don't you have to use specific Ethernet cable to be able to run phantom power down the lines as well? I've been looking at these for my home guitar rig with a remote cab. Love the GB Tracker!
Side question for the hive mind here (or for you Eric!): anyone know what the make/model of the "little ethernet converter boxes" are that he's using to run the XLRs from the live room to the control room over cat6? Looks like they're straight wire connections, so not converting/sampling at the box, just adapting the XLRs to the ethernet pins. Would LOVE to know what the EV-approved product there is. Would save me a lot of headaches in my setup here for tracking is satellite rooms. Thanks in advance for any pointers, URLs to specific products, etc.
SoundTools/Rat Sound CAT products probably. You’re correct, it’s just a simple analog adapter, 4 XLR per Cat5 cable. I believe radial has started making a similar product now too
@@griffinkisner7795 Awesome, thanks! I found the Radial product, & was curious if it was the same concept (looks like it is). Thanks again! I might pick up a male/female set of the Radial's as a test to see if they can help with long cable runs. Super cool!
I just checked and it does still appear to be on spotify. I'm not sure about the rest. Dan Arlie (the singer) controls all things T-Ride so I really don't know what the issues might be there.
This is cool and all but can we talk about about the drums in the demo clip? I feel like it needs it’s own video breakdown. It’s like Tom Petty on roids.

19:03 and alsooo 🤣 you back
nice one looks like n awesome product!
Super cool!
Nice! How much approx will be the GB tracker?
$895 for GB Tracker and $295 for the Satellite
❤
wooohoo!
How is it called the processor that you show at the 4:11 minute mark?
If I understand the question. I am referring to the RCA BC-2B Tube mixing console. It adds amazing coloration to anything you put through it!
@@mrwev Sure! Thank you very much Eric!!! Can't wait to hear it in the next videos
Hey Buster👋 Loved your NTM sessions!
Hey Eric, off subject here but I have to ask, why is it that I cannot find the T- ride album on any platform? Where can I get this?
I just checked and it does still appear to be on spotify. I'm not sure about the rest. Dan Arlie (the singer) controls all things T-Ride so I really don't know what the issues might be there.
@@mrwev coolio, many thanks for your reply!
Anyone else watching waiting for the lamp bulb to set the backdrop on fire?
my dream to work creatively with you🐝🤩🎤🐦🦄
I want to do the same thing but use Amplitube instead of a real amp (for bass and guitar).
Where do I swipe? I didn't think when I clicked on this video that I would lose $900.
This is cool and all but can we talk about about the drums in the demo clip? I feel like it needs it’s own video breakdown. It’s like Tom Petty on roids.
EV is a proper audio engineer. hope it retails cheaper than the unfairly priced unfairchild.
You look a bit and smile like jeff Porcaro.
