This is the scene from Into The Wild starring Emile Hirsch, where Chris McCandeless (Hirsch) visits Salvation Mountain with Tracy (Kristen Stewart). I OWN NOTHING IN THIS CLIP.
I've actually met the guy. His name's Leonard Knight. He crash landed in his hot air balloon a while back. He decided that he should stay. After some time, he produced Salvation Mountain. It's entirely made out of clay, paint, and straw. You can go there even to this day and he'll give you a tour of the place, free of charge. He's probably one of the most sane, encouraging people you'll ever meet.
He seems like he would be a guy that collected change out of arcades when they used to be at the beach. Just feeding and giving off the positive energy everyone brings there. (The beach)
Kristen Stewart said in an interview that this scene was just a slug line in the script: “Chris and Tracy go to Salvation Mountain.” And the whole thing was improvised with Leonard.
I was there last summer and there's a middle aged surfer taking care of it now. He's loyal to Leonard and is very protective of his work. He's also making his own additions to the side of the original mountain.
Having visited the Slabs because of this scene, and even enjoying the chance to help Leonard a bit with materials and painting, I can attest that the love he personifies is as real and brilliant as the desert sun. Makes my eyes well up virtually every time I see this. Thank you.
“I think good gets better”. I was never so sure about Sean Penn as an actor, but, My God, he made a masterpiece with this movie. It’s so moving and beautiful. And it proves that all great films have great soundtracks. Surely it’s time for it to be celebrated the way it truly deserves.
I met Leonard Knight on a trip from San Diego to Yuma a few years back. On the spur of a moment I took a detour to Salton Sea. I'm so glad I did. Not may strangers stand out in my memory the way that old man does. Nothing phony, nothing to discover, what you see is what you get. He doesn't offer any more than he expects which is nothing really, just be who you are. Very wise man, you can see it in his eyes when he talks to you.
this old man is the craziest, coolest and honest guy I will ever met someday in my life, just for his wisdom and kindness is a must to visit a place like that
I LOVE the fact that the "old man" is not an actor, he's an actual man living in salvation mountain with an endless love for life. That's the kind of stuff that makes this movie so fucking great, while emile and kristen is in a way acting this scene this man is just telling the truth. If you doubt it, look at him! He looks like he's been living his whole life in the sunshine. Epic movie epic scene
I think this was the best part of the movie it was so unrehearsed and real. I think those two were meeting him for their first time and Sean Penn just let the cameras roll and used it uncut in the movie! I did visit salvation mountain and climb to the top with my son. The hardest part of all it if you're going August it's normally around 120°, but still well worth it for those of you I really like this movie! The government has tried to tear this down and boot the people out of slab City but they fought them off with lawyers. The government tried to say that the paint was polluting the area so they did soil test improved it didn't pollute anything. Who knows though in the future they might get their wish and this will all be torn down!
@filwho That old man is Leonard Knight. He is the sweetest old man from Vermont that you will ever meet. I've sat and talked with him out at Salvation Mountain (where this takes place). This is out in Brawley, California. Shawn Penn wanted him to read from a script for this scene. It was all improv. He told him to just send his actors to him and he'll just treat them like everyone else. So everything that he said in this scene, came from him....non-scripted. He said it from the heart.
The best scenes from the movie are the scenes I drove my 1985 tan GMC van in. You can see it at the marina scene, behind the dust as he's walking up from Lake Mead. The other time you can see my van is when he's riding in back of a pickup truck, while crossing Hoover Dam. Just as that scene is about to end, my van appears going the other way. My van almost made it in the movie a third time, in a hitch hiking scene.
This actually wasnt scripted at all. I kinda got that vibe when I first watched the movie because the man seemed so genuine and I later found it out to be true.
I've been to salvation mountain and i reckon everyone must go there and meet the old guy in this video, Sir Leonard Knight, he's 80 now and he might not be having too much time left because of his worsening health and that throws me for a loop cuz he's such a nice man and i really hope and pray that he lives for several years to come to invigorate and galvanize people to love god and all his creations.
@29Kyle Yeah you're right, his name is Leonard and he sits by the Salvation Mountain like 24/7 - amazing guy to dedicated his life to preserving it and giving out the messages of love - fab.
@filwho That guy isn't an actor, he's the actual man who built Salvation Mountain and who has lived there for over 20 years. The reason that his acting is so amazing is because it's not acting - it's REAL. He REALLY believes in love, he isn't acting it out.
This is one of the best scenes i've ever seen in my life. It contains so many beautiful emotions. Everything a young man could ever want.. in these 2.38 minutes. Its so far beyond any religion..
I assumed that they told them that it was a documentary or they wanted a tour so they would get a "real" reaction out of him. Especially that line about the sewer plant, so out of left field. lol.
thank you so much for uploading this scene.... this movie should be shown in school. so people learn that money isn't everything, in fact. it's nothing compared to love.
1:34 "..yeah....God REALLY LOVES US ...A LOT." sorry about the caps, but Leonard Knight, RIP (playing himself in this movie) is still shouting it through speakers without raising his voice.
netflicked this when released, mainly cuz of Emile Hirsch. didn't really know what to expect, other than a great story. saw again tonight. no question, one of the BEST movies i've seen EVER. Emile RARELY does a movie i don't thoroughly enjoy. pretty obvious Mr Knight was playing himself, and wasn't an "actor". to me, one of the most beautiful scenes. LOVE IS everywhere. peace :)
Leonard Knight is beloved by a global community. His art is a three-story adobe colorful art installation that blooms in the middle of the desert. From the apex of God Is Love is a panoramic view of the desert's Slab City, Chocolate Mountain, and the glistening Salton Sea.
If anyone was wondering, the old guy is not an actor, he actually lives there, he built that mountain by hand over 36 years, and everything he says there is what he believes, not a line in a movie.
@filwho totally agree with this! When I watched the movie I couldn't tell if he was an actor or not...turns out he's playing himself. His name is Leonard Knight and he's on wiki if you wanna read about him :) It's a brilliant scene - one of, if not the best in the movie!
@filwho nah he wasn't acting at all. My art teacher said she got to meet him and he acted exactly like this in real life and said pretty much the same things.
VERY IMPORTANT: Please keep Leonard in your thoughts and prAyers. He has been in extreme pain the last couple of weeks and a decision has been made by doctors and next of kin as well as Leonard to have his right leg amputated above the knee. More details will come as they are available. Again please keep him in your thoughts.
@filwho he's not an actor. he's the real old man. Chris spent some time in this place, near this old man. but in an interview, he declares that he does not remember Chris being there, living with them and him. he refers at him as 'gentleman'. :) he's so cute, so true, even in the movie.
it's inspiring to see that in this world of obsession about working 9-5 and living in suburbia there are other's who yearn for a simple freedom......truly amazing
i cant seem to find the song if recall its in the early part of the movie when he starts travelling hes in the car on a bridge or something. its more joyful kinda popish then the other songs in the movie.
I don't interpret this scene like that. I don't think we're born to make an impact to this world, that's not important. We're not born to do anything to be honest. But this scene shows a man that did the best we could with his life. He found his place in life, a place he loved and where he wanted to live. Forever. And that should be everyone's goal. Just do what you love, wherever you love.
@filwho The reason it is believable is(correct me if I am wrong). However I am pretty sure this is an actual guy that lives out in Salton City. And I also believe that is his legitimate house. So it isn't a surprise if it is believable if he isn't really even acting. He is just being himself.
That lovely old man was no actor... He was Leonard Knight. The man who actually built and lived at Salvation Mountain. Rest in heaven dude.
I am pretty sure he had a happy life.
I asked Leonard if he was given a script or did he just say what he wanted? Leonard answered; "I said what I wanted."
Best part in the entire movie.....................
so happy world had this chance to know a bit about this man
I miss Leonard. Still try to hit the library/bar/town hall every thanksgiving. Lot of greatfull people in S.C.
RIP Leonard Knight, you're with your Savior now.
gosh..he is gone?...goosebumps..
RIP Leonard knight =(
this is one of my favorite scenes from any movie that I've ever seen
My favorite scene too
It's my favorite video about Leonard and Salvation Mountain. I live in Slab City. It makes me teary and I'm an athiest😂
Agreed

The balloon crash actually has nothing to do with him staying there
"You really believe in love, then?"
"Yeah. TOTALLY."
God, that was so sincere it made my heart ache. Wow.
It was actually sincere as well! He didnt have a script
He seems like he would be a guy that collected change out of arcades when they used to be at the beach. Just feeding and giving off the positive energy everyone brings there. (The beach)
Imagine if Alex had actually met Leonard Knight and decided that he wanted to stay at Salvation Mountain and inherited it after Leonard died.
I felt exactly the same
The sincere look on his face no actor could emulate.

You can see God's love through that humble man! God bless him.....
you sure can brother.
"..yeah....God really LOVES us ...A *LOT."*

Neat
Gosh, I can never get enough of this scene
This scene is a powerful reminder to us all that there are many different ways to make an impact in this world.

And the way she Looks at him 1:48 is exceptionell
@@erikleissner832Kristen Stewart had lust in her heart but dude said, how old are you?
This still brings a tear to my eye. Hope he's found his forever mountain.

You have to just absolutely love that old guy. What an awesome character he is.

She is absolutely disgusting
@@jonmacdonald5345 why?
I was here today, felt all the dedication of Mr. Knight. Literally love was everywhere and colorful at that.

I wonder if Emile's handprints are still there?

Sean Penn directed this fine piece of art
What a awesome beautiful kind of a good old man!
I think/feel that Sean Penn don’t gave him a Skript. It feels like pure authenticity ✊🏼✌🏼

i love seeing a video with zero dislikes :) particularly if it is from Into The Wild :)
This was a good date idea
well, i don't think she thought she'd become hated all over internet if she was in that movie. She's just an actress you know.
Kristen Stewart is 1 of 8 billion / she is way more than just an actress
