This guy is a bass players bassist. In his videos he constantly talks of harmony, scales and modes and how to navigate the instrument. I get turned off when guys talk about pedals and effects. The beauty of the sound of the bass alone is amazing. Nothing wrong with that other stuff but Im more intrested in seeing someone who can master the instrument well.
That C# minor b5 scale he uses sounds a bit similar to the Japanese minor pentatonic. I use it sometimes in my solos, but a way slower version of what Rufus does, lol.
Hey Rufus, can I have your 2x10 cab? GK doesn't make them anymore! Seriously though, sick playing, sick ideas, and that bass is incredible. I am blown away by the B string; your tone barely changed at all when you went down to it. What kind of strings do you have on there?
homeslice1479 hey thanks! I'm glad you liked it..Spread the word-I'm offering Skype bass lessons too nowadays! As for strings: I have been using La Bella Nickels Eric Cocco for nearly twenty years now..The B is always incredible..My preferred gauge is .045 thru .128 ......Plus I have some flats on some P bass models I own.. Go to labella.com and they have info
homeslice1479 Hey there: La Bellas! Nickel rounds....Amazing B string on those combined w/ the Xotic's even tone.....045-.128! Cheers Rufus www.rufusphilpot.com Bass Lessons available!
Hi Viktor- Exactly yes...! So we have A maj pentatonic, B Minor pentatonic,(even B Blues partially-with taste and not staying on the F natural as a resting point) -the angular C # based minor pent, w flat 5, and so forth. The idea is to get some of the students to move away from starting and thinking of everything from the root of the chord they are improvising over...
That C# it's a #11 on G major, G mayor can be a Lydian (IV of D major), Dominant Lydian (IV of D melodic minor), etc. Can use everything just staying on tensions and chord tones, dynamize every harmonic pass with chromatic paints over it, it will be a real pleasure have some bass lesson from Rufus, but geographic distance make it impossible, gretting from chile!
HAD THE PLEASURE OF TAKING MY FIRST CLASS WITH HIM TODAY.. GUY IS AMAZING
Wow, only this week I came across this guy Rufus he is knowledgeable competent and awesome. He's fresh and inspiring.
Rufus Philpot you are the reason I started playing bass. Your playing is awe inspiring!
His fingers on the fretboard are like a kid playing in the playground on all the different rides and enjoying every minute of it.
Rufus is a great musician.
You are a very good teacher. Keep the vids coming.

did the drummer get the audition?
Always!
I dont really understand what he is playing at 0:56, the minor shape. Is it Bminor Pentatonic over a G major?
