Looking good. These old machines are deceptively simple yet produce such accurate results.

Thanks Mick! Long way to go. Looking at your one-shot oiler episode for inspiration. Incredible that the cast bearings and the shafts did not do more harm. Sometimes the old magic still works well. LOL.

I had to go on the web and research Lewis Shapers. Pretty cool that this was originally a build it yourself kit. I will be following along on the build/rebuild of this. 👍

Great job on the strip down Dan, I will be following suit in the next few weeks with my Atlas 7b. Sticker arrived safe by the way. Cheers, Jon

Jon, so very kind of you to stop in. Likewise, I will be watching your progress as well. The chaps in the old country have all been so kind to my channel.
I did not comment on your latest carbide episode to save you commenting back (never worry about responding - just smile and shake your head). However, the episode was tremendous and will be a go to reference for so very many of us. You have put together a truly great book of work.
      All the best

    Loving this Dan.
I can see a cool retro-mod machine at the end of this project.
    All the best Neil 😊

It is always satisfying to rebuild an old machine. And this shaper looks to be in great shape. A great shape shaper, what more can you ask for?

To start I love what you're doing here it's awesome. I have been thinking about the vice, and I have some ideas. In regards to the height of the mounted vise I would get rid of the base all together then I would machine off the step/ring making the round part flat then have a shaft/bolt go down through the table with a nut on the inside of the knee similar to an Atlas shaper (and similar sized shapers). For the screw that tightens the vice on the body/front of the body I would drill ream/bore an oversized hole on location (plug the old one if needed) fit with a brass sleeve with the i.d. you want. Then one movable jaw I would completely mill off the old nut so you don't have to worry about trying to fix the off center hole then I would make a new one out off brass and mount it similar to a brass nut from the cross slide of a lathe. obviously there are some specific details that you would have to work out that I'm unable to since I can't measure the vise and get dimensions, but hopefully you're able to save the vice. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Thanks Keith. What great insight and suggestions. That is exactly what I had in mind by asking for viewer thoughts.
Stay tuned its gonna get much more involved shortly.

    Hello Dan,
A very enjoyable project... slightly off topic I was wondering if you were planning to put some drip oilers on the man ram... Rustinox has some modified ones on his shaper... See you on the next one...
    Take care.

Thanks Paul. I was considering a one shot oiler for the ram similar to our fellow creator Mick’s Workshop. I do love a beautiful drip oiler for simple elegance, but for the price a one shot may be the way. In addition, I had an idea to add a plate and close the base and main body to create simple splash wet sump for the gear drive and Scotch Yoke. At present they require a random squirt of oil. One worry is the oil splash being thrown up and out the ram … LOL. Thanks for watching.

That was a cool kit back in the day. I imagine whoever cut that gear had there numbers off just a tad and when he got to cutting the last tooth it was like " ut oh."

Well, that explains the skip. The feed nuts are conventionally bronze, not brass. Do not use brass. Cast iron will wear the screw more but does at least have some useful elf lubrication properties with the excess carbon. The drive arm I believe is called a yoke.
