  • Did we get SCAMMED in ROME Italy? 🇮🇹
In this video we will give our First Impressions of Rome Italy. In this Italy travel vlog we explore Rome for the first time.
Hi, my name is Will. The last time you saw us, we were deep in the heart of the winter Wonderland that is Finland and Estonia. There it is calm and cold. Even the touristy spots don't get too crazy. But now it is my wife Katy's birthday and she wants to celebrate it in Italy. In this serie, we will take trains through the country, sail the Amalfi coast, and wander an ancient city preserved by volcanic debris. But today we explore Italy's capital of Rome. We know it is going to be touristy, but will the crowds take away from how much we enjoy this trip? Will we get tricked by the notorious Rome scammers and pick pockets? Let's find out together. Welcome to Rome Italy!
Maybe I announced that too soon. As we weaved through the sea of humanity, away from the Trevii fountain, we saw our first set of scammers. Luckily, we made it through the crowd without being targeted.
In order to pace ourselves, we walked down some side streets. They may not talk about them in travel guides, but to us, this is where the real beauty of Rome resides. We even stumbled across where the world famous artist Pablo Picasso lived in 1917!
When we reached Piazza del Popolo, we saw our first side affect of a touristy city; construction. We could still access the incredible statues, including a Sphinx, that took us back to our time in Egypt. But, the view of the obelisk was marred by barriers and a construction vehicle.
At the bottom of the Spanish steps is a Bernini fountain, that is shaped like a boat. The aqueduct that feeds this fountain, had water pressure that was too low to create jets or a waterfall, so Bernini made it look like a boat, submerged in water. And since the water is from an aqueduct, you can drink from it. As long as you can walk the plank to the spout.
Next we headed to get a closer view, of Castel Sant' Angelo, which first served as a mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian.
Rome isn't just famous for its scammers, but also for its food. We tried pasta, that you could tell was made with the freshest ingredients. We had a basic pizza, fresh from the oven. We had a cappuccino and pastry. Well, we had a lot of pastries. But, in fairness, it was Katy's birthday.
When we were at Piazza Venezia we saw a LOT more construction than at Piazza del Popolo. The amount of railing and scaffolding, really took away from the beauty of the Altar of the Fatherland. And boy were the sirens loud!
We did find a peaceful park with a detailed fountain in the middle. It was surrounded by buildings which blocked out the street noise. All we could hear was the water falling, birds chirping, and the light mumbles of private conversations.
Then it was off to the Pantheon. Good thing we took a crowd break, because this area was packed. I even think more people were here, than at the Trevi Fountain. But it was worth it. We've never seen a building like this. It has 3 layers; the portico, that looks like the front of an ancient temple, an intermediate block that serves as a junction and connector, and lastly, a domed rotunda.
Next, we went to the site where Julius Cesar was believed to have been assassinated. I believe this was only reopened to the public in June 2023. Even if you are not into history, you can come to see all of the cats.
After a full day of exploring, we returned to our rented apartment in the suburbs of Rome. Which was way more peaceful, and a lot less crowded.
That evening Katy told me that the busyness and scammers didn’t take away from seeing all the historical sites. Her favorite monument, was the Trevii Fountain. And even though the area was packed with people, the true beauty of it still surprised her. She was not expecting it to be that grand. She thought it was going to be over hyped.
And even in the midst of the crowds of the rest of the city, we were able to find little alleys and quiet spaces to enjoy. The good thing is, this was just the start of her birthday trip, so we had other areas of Italy to look forward to. And you will also, if you follow along in this series. Thank you so much for watching this video. This is WITY TRAVELS. What could possibly be next?
In case you are new here, we are Will and Katy and we are a married couple that hopes to show you what it is like to travel around the world in 2024!

The little alleyways in Italy are the best parts! They’re so beautiful 😍

We like how we approached the city. Go to a touristy spot that will be super crowded, then take a break on a side street or in a park. The side streets are so beautiful and that's probably what the rest of Italy is like.

We have a fountain in our "hometown" of Cheltenham England that was patterned after the Trevi fountain. But we still need to see the original one of these days! We haven't been to Rome yet. We look forward to going one day, and I am anxious to see what you show in this video!

Cameras can't even do the Trevi Fountain justice. It's such a master piece. You have to go to Rome and see it!

Rome is so beautiful but man it’s a lot of tourist, the food looks great, it’s amazing to think that people spend their life walking by ancient ruins that shaped our world today. Awesome vlog.

Thanks friends! We like how we approached the city; alternating crowded tourist spots with peaceful side alleys and parks. You can definitely get overwhelmed there, but when in Rome you have to see the historic sites.

Good to see you in Rome!! Love the title and theme of this video - I hate all those scammers, sad that you have to wear your backpack that way around but definitely the smart thing to do. I experienced the bracelet scam the first time I visited Milan, I was hanging around the main square a lot and that's where they operate mostly. The scam is when you accept it and they put it on your wrist - you then can't get it off and they start demanding money. The average tourist feels guilty and doesn't want the hassle so they pay up. From what I've seen they can get quite nasty. Glad you didn't get caught out! I think at 08:45 I spotted the car I parked back in 2014, I do hope it hasn't been causing too much of an obstruction. Impressed with how many incredible landmarks you packed into your visit! HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATY, looks like you had a memorable time!

It sucks that one has to keep their guard up and can't focus on the historical sites. Most people dream of visiting Rome, but it certainly isn't a place you should go as an inexperienced traveler. Move your car. COME ON. We have a lot more landmarks to show. Thank you Matt!

Literally 0:59 is how we do it in Argentina too haha. All the food is amazing, I could eat all that for the rest of my life! This piazza 7:18 is one of my fav as well as Piazza Navona! The guy in 7:39 didn't find a rubbish bin I guess? haha. I lived in France from 2010 to 2013 and even back then... these scammers were everywhere, we used to tell them "le flic, le flic" (police, police) and they ran away, student times! You're right scammers cannot take away all those beautiful sites... unfortunately in large European cities this is becoming "normal" 😅 Another great video, looking forward to your next videos in Italy, keep up the great work! And Happy Birthday Katy! :)

Ale! Congrats on the 1.1 million view video. It's a shame why Yemen is in the news, but at least more people get to see your amazing work..... apparently it's not just a tourist thing to put the backpack backwards; it's just a good idea. The plazas in Italy are so nice! Even with some construction. Pirates don't follow the laws of the land! You have to be on guard so that those guys don't put a bracelet on you that you don't want. Thanks for all the support Ale!
