Ya, I think the mic should have been down lower and closer to the edge. That top cymbal of the hi hat can only travel a little bit so there's no chance of it slamming into the mic. Is that an Audio Technica 4041? If it is, that's a great mic for hi hat - one that beats the Shure SM81. The rest of the drums are perfect: I'm puzzled how the engineer missed the boat on this one.

Senri Puppy!!. Yea, I am 62 and was into Yes, and Mahavishnu, RTF, Tony Williams with Holdsworth. fusion and Prog. I started with that 45 years ago and practiced drums every day. I got good, but not at the level of Senri. Her mom was not even born when I was seeing Jimmy Smith play B3 at his supper club. She surpassed me quite a bit. I still don't understand how with most young people today loving to hear electronic computerized pop, people like Senri even exist. How does this young lady play with such skill, technique and taste know from Lenny White, Cobham, Vinnie, Simon, Dennis, Weckl? And that keyboardist she plays with, Kiyomi Otaka (who plays a real B3 with the bass pedals). How many people even know what a B3 is?

@@TronciM If it's talent, then why does everyone who plays like only do so after putting in many thousands of hours doing it? You can have physical traits that make it easier for you to do some things than others, and maybe traits that make it impossible for you to do some things (at least competitively.)
But everyone who really does something great has basically two things going on. 1-They like it and 2-Therefore they do it all the time. Often 3-They start young and have 1&2, therefore they are very good at a pretty young age. And very often 4-They get some sort of recognition young from it. Everyone wants to be special and that drives them and mastery of that thing comes to define them in their own minds, which again makes them do it all the time and really want it badly.
Lots of people then act like it's some gift from the gods, but it's work and practice and desire. Otherwise, they wouldn't have to put in 20,000 hours doing it in order to be that good.
I think the mistake is comparing them to people who never get that good. In almost all cases, they won't have worked as hard, or they have other interests that distract them, or they just do it and don't live it and think about it all the time and study it as a science at the same time as they develop it as an art. Those things make a huge difference.
And yes, in some cases genetics will factor in, though that's not too much of an issue with drumming, as proven by the wide variety of humans who are good drummers.

A freaking excellent performance, technically astounding but full of musicality. _I love it!_ Senri-san rides that 7/8 (or 7/4) groove effortlessly. The time signature changes to 4/4 and back are buttery smooth. Especially her transition into 4/4 with triplets at 1:51. This is just plain awesome. Great work!

Like the drums know no gender, a groove knows no nation. Watching Senri smile as she hits that second break and slips even more deeply into the pocket just loads my heart up with joy. If everyone in the world could get down together like that we could finally get rid of religion. it's fucking quarter to 1 here, I got work in 5 hours, and I want to get up and jam now... righteous.

He must have also been the dumbest, if he actually said that (and it wouldn't surprise me). From what I've seen most drumming experts don't rate him anywhere near to the top. He was also a world class JERK from what I've heard and seen on some videos. Absurdly ridiculously demanding of his band (of himself too) , and routinely acted like a two year old. There is at least one vid on YT of him excoriating his band on a bus if you don't believe it, and it ain't pretty. And no, being very good does NOT excuse that kind of behavior. He obviously had some personal demons, and if he actually said that, some pretty serious delusions.
