Two questions: Are these available ready to go(i.e. without needing to solder it together)? And does the gamecube need to be modded to play games like this or can you just plug it in? (I know you said it's not but just making sure).
Just search "gamecube sd2sp2" on Ebay if you want to buy a pre-assembled unit. I don’t think the Gamecube *has* to be modded, But it certainly helps. To use this device you will need a piece of homebrew software called "Swiss" which you either have to load from a burned disc (Gamecubes need to have a modchip installed in order to read burned or out-of-region media), or buy an Action Replay disc and load it with that.
@@excusablegold so in addition to the methods you described for loading Swiss I've seen elsewhere that it can be loaded onto a memory card that way you wouldn't have to use the mod chip or the action replay loader? Is this true and if not would any version or year Action Replay for GameCube work? As there's quite a few versions from my research? Thanks for your time! :)
@@mrturbo757 As far as I'm aware, no, Swiss can't be loaded from just a memory card. The Gamecube won't try to load software from the memory card unless a program on a disc tells it to. There was a device released recently called GC Loader that replaces the Gamecube's miniDVD drive with an SD card reader. Which may have been what you were thinking of. However they still require a little bit of soldering. I'm fairly sure that any version of Action Replay for the Gamecube can be used, however Nintendo made the later DOL-101 model incompatible. So you'd need an AR disc made after 2004 (1.14b and up, I think) if you have one of those.
Thanks for the great and helpful videos. I'm new to GameCube modding but I've been wanting to do for a while. I'm thinking about getting the xenogc modchip and your SD2SP2 adapter. My main question is if I get both is that all I need to get Swiss on my GameCube? Or do I still need the sd gecko or GameCube action replay for the Swiss install. Eager to get started modding my GameCube XD
Mario Kart was the first thing I tested as well. Still need to see if LAN multiplayer works now on it via memcard/sd2sp2 . Have to mod another disc drive to test between 2 cubes.
Ross, please let me know what you find. I wouldnt mind making a follow-up video to this which shows homebrew and a few other things and a nugget like that would be great to include!
@@RockerGaming tested today between 2 gamecubes running Mario kart via sdgecko and sp2sd. It's working!!! It was only 1 vs 1 but according to old compatibility list lan mode wouldn't even start.
Thats what I was running in this video. The nice thing is I was using an off brand micro sd card and it was reading it without issue, which was fantastic!
Hey ,your work have save my game cube collection , but question can buy a SPchip already put together? I wish I could solder but my hands aren't that great
@@RockerGaming yes actually I just did yesterday. It fixed alot of games cut scenes that stuttered like def jam vendetta and f-zero audio but titles like soulcaliber 2 still seem to struggle with fmv. They must be tweaking it game by game.

Is this the original? As I've just got the v2 China special in 2024. Swiss boots everything like a dream, sd gecko to boot to swiss with an action replay sd media launcher disc. Complete noob about all this but got set up no problem. Thanks very much for the idea 👍🔥
I’m trying to find if it is possible to install mods onto a physical GameCube game, like a Luigi mod for super Mario sunshine for example. Is something like that possible?
I find inspiration in your videos, especially when you cover GameCube customization. I wanted to ask if you have a solution to painting GameCube controllers for long term use (because smash bros).
Num, much appreciated dude! I dont do the painting, I leave it to my buddy Pucho Magic. I know he uses all automotive paint and it seems to hold up pretty damn well!
For this I use a carby to output digital video via hdmi from the GC and have that hooked into the el gato game capture (older usb 2.0 device) and it works really well!
So I have one of these and I'm excited. I just soldered the xeno chip and that looks like it's good to go. I think in the video you ran Swiss straight from the sd2sp2? I'm looking to do that if possible instead of using a gecko or action replay or other boot method. Basically I'm just asking for confirmation.
Nice I literally just came up on a GameCube from Japan with Super Smash Bros. Melee included, for only $70😎 thanks to those ending soon bids on eBay lol
Hey man, saw a listing on eBay originating from China that used a video snapshot at 0:11 of you about to insert the SD2SP2 adapter to sell their own printed boards of them. That custom Metroid Prime 4 themed GameCube is pretty distinct, did they ask for your permission?
If you have a Xeno Modded GameCube do you till need a action replay? Or do you just Format the SD card to Fat32 and put the "swiss_r798-compressed.dol" on to it?
Within swiss zip file there is a folder called iso. Extract the appropriate region iso and burn that to mini dvd-r using imgburn. Put that into your xeno modded console with sd2sp2 and you're all set!
@RockerGaming Do all games run flawlessly? I’m thinking about buying a GameCube that won’t read discs and using it for this mod. But will some games have glitches?
Ok so for this mod it seems like you'll need a boot launcher disk or get a xeno gc chip to mod and burn your own boot disk? And it seems like that mod already has swiss install just need a boot launcher disk right? And how about playing Gameboy games on sd without that bottom attachment
Hey, I know the video is already one year old, but I really like the style of your GC. Any hint where I could find the parts for a shell replacement or did you spray them by yourself?

And does the gamecube need to be modded to play games like this or can you just plug it in? (I know you said it's not but just making sure).
I like how he liked your comment but didn’t answer your questions when that’s literally the whole point of your comment lmao
I second both of these questions
Dude that GameCube is soooo boss! I will check out that vid!
Thanks homie much appreciated!
That's very nice..
I'm experience that problem with my🙁.. nice work 🙌
Thank you sir! I will have to get you one of these, I have one set aside for you!
Oh Bloody hell I just missed them on your Etsy store v.v
I have more on the way :)
Lol... You can get them on eBay for $2.
Etsy is overpriced.
Pretty neat. Good video.
Thanks buddy!
Damn these are dope! Are you going to be listing more?
I will. I just ordered more pcbs. Citrus3000psi has some in stock right now check out his website!
@@RockerGaming Awesome thanks!
you can buy this adapter at aliexpress completely mounted for under 3 Euros / Dollars include shipping
Seems like a lot of work vs. buying a Wii for $25 and softmodding it and being able to do way more with it.
IPA? India Pale Ale?? I never would have thought to put the beer there. Usually it just goes in my mouth...
Bahahaha isopropyl alcohol 🤣
Great vid like always!
Much appreciated! Always exciting when new mods come out :)
Since the SP2 finally has a purpose why can’t an external Full-size DVD (it can play movies) drive be made to connect to it?
Thanks for the great and helpful videos. I'm new to GameCube modding but I've been wanting to do for a while. I'm thinking about getting the xenogc modchip and your SD2SP2 adapter. My main question is if I get both is that all I need to get Swiss on my GameCube? Or do I still need the sd gecko or GameCube action replay for the Swiss install. Eager to get started modding my GameCube XD
You can manually wire an SD card slot to serial port 2 with some wire. You don't have to go out and source these little PCB's.
100% accurate, however, convenience is nice, but spot on, you can do this fairly easily!
gbatemp.net/threads/diy-sd2sp2-installed-internally-soldering-a-micro-sd-adapter-to-gamecube-serial-port-2.550301/?fbclid=IwAR2T6tDaL6U2YdEnBxrVxJpz6xZATGeag3B81mZ8ArLuV5gqZEhALvMEkaA
Just shove the card directly into the slot, I'm sure it'll work
Mario Kart was the first thing I tested as well.
It was only 1 vs 1 but according to old compatibility list lan mode wouldn't even start.
come pay day this is defo on my wish list got a few 128gb sds at home so shud be able to put the digi iso of my disks nicely backed up
Thats what I was running in this video. The nice thing is I was using an off brand micro sd card and it was reading it without issue, which was fantastic!
@Arnold101Knight I meant I can get digital imports of my games so I can spare my disks xD
thanks alot dude !
This is cool!
Hey ,your work have save my game cube collection , but question can buy a SPchip already put together? I wish I could solder but my hands aren't that great
This is all awesome. I'm still experiencing choppy FMV with soulcaliber 2 unfortunately.
Did you updaye to the latest version of swiss? According to the creators they said thevmost recent version should improve fmv play back.
@@RockerGaming yes actually I just did yesterday. It fixed alot of games cut scenes that stuttered like def jam vendetta and f-zero audio but titles like soulcaliber 2 still seem to struggle with fmv. They must be tweaking it game by game.
Get a Gen 1 Wii, Backwards compatible with Gamecube games, complete with memory card and controller slots, then search Wii Home brew and Letterbomb method, get a micro or full size SD CARD and save yourself all of this soldering trouble....
The GameCube has a better video output, Gameboy Player support and is a cooler console though
I went to the Etsy page and see you’re sold out, will you have more in stock soon?
Yes I will I have another shipment of boards on their way to me now. HOpefully should have them listed back half of next week.
I'll hazard a guess this would work with an Action Replay launcher? I have to agree, the SD memory cards are an eye sore!
Is this the original? As I've just got the v2 China special in 2024. Swiss boots everything like a dream, sd gecko to boot to swiss with an action replay sd media launcher disc. Complete noob about all this but got set up no problem. Thanks very much for the idea 👍🔥
Got metroid gamecube at car boot for 10 euro with all the wires 2 games and controller def gonna mod it cheers
dude so sick! Nice pickup there!
I’m trying to find if it is possible to install mods onto a physical GameCube game, like a Luigi mod for super Mario sunshine for example.
Is something like that possible?
In sure it is, but I cant say I know anything about it. Hopefully someone can chime in who does
You have to mod the game file and reburn it to a disk with the modded files and it would play in any cube with a xeno mod.
Amazing
I find inspiration in your videos, especially when you cover GameCube customization. I wanted to ask if you have a solution to painting GameCube controllers for long term use (because smash bros).
Num, much appreciated dude! I dont do the painting, I leave it to my buddy Pucho Magic. I know he uses all automotive paint and it seems to hold up pretty damn well!
only thing left is a no solder needed board to buy and i'd be one board for this. as i only own gc and a non gc wii with nothing in way to solder.
shop.dansprojects.com/gamecube-sd2sp2-assembled.html
You use Indian Pale Ale to clean off flux?
Not sure if this has been asked, but what's the max size microSD this works with? Thanks for shedding some light on this cool project!
No problem! I was using a 128gb card I want to say max is 256gb but I have not looked at it in a while.
@@RockerGaming Thanks!
No problem!
2 TB.
@@ExtremsCorner From the man himself, thanks Extrem's!
Your capture is amazingly clean, what kind of software/hardware do you use?
For this I use a carby to output digital video via hdmi from the GC and have that hooked into the el gato game capture (older usb 2.0 device) and it works really well!
So I have one of these and I'm excited. I just soldered the xeno chip and that looks like it's good to go. I think in the video you ran Swiss straight from the sd2sp2? I'm looking to do that if possible instead of using a gecko or action replay or other boot method. Basically I'm just asking for confirmation.
I booted from a burned copy of Swiss on a mini DVD. Unfortunately SD Gecko nor SD2SP2 can be used to direct boot Swiss
@@RockerGaming ah ok thank you for that. Gonna have to see if I can find some DVD-R around me haha
Nice I literally just came up on a GameCube from Japan with Super Smash Bros. Melee included, for only $70😎 thanks to those ending soon bids on eBay lol
Very nice score!
have you installed green or yellow LED's in your Samus gamecube yet?
Hey man, saw a listing on eBay originating from China that used a video snapshot at 0:11 of you about to insert the SD2SP2 adapter to sell their own printed boards of them. That custom Metroid Prime 4 themed GameCube is pretty distinct, did they ask for your permission?
So how does it work for games that have multiple discs? Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid?
great tutorial,
Thank you, I appreciate you checking it out and leaving a comment!
What kind of screws do you use if you want to replace rusted gamecube controller screws?
Will you be making more "fully assembled" sd card adapters? Sold out on your etsy. -_-
Just saw this on his Etsy store last night and was thinking "Can't really find anything about this on UA-cam"
haha, you were one step ahead on this one!
I'm not sure why you have to do this soldering work. Can't you get them already assembled for like a dollar? :D
I would recommend this mod for that... this is the one to do that with ua-cam.com/video/iKXMIveMmYE/v-deo.html
RockerGaming you would recommend? Or you wouldn’t?
RockerGaming also... have you tested Twilight Princess or Metroid Prime on this SD card mod? Do those games run ok?
@@spikecomix6396 I wouldnt recommend this in your case as you will need the dvd drive to be able to run swiss
Unfortunately I have not tested either of those games with this particular mod.
Ok so for this mod it seems like you'll need a boot launcher disk or get a xeno gc chip to mod and burn your own boot disk? And it seems like that mod already has swiss install just need a boot launcher disk right?
And how about playing Gameboy games on sd without that bottom attachment
so in terms of loading speed and operation like FMV stuff etc. SD2SP2 isn't really faster than via the memory card bus using a gecko?
"Good soldering skills are required". Puts solder directly onto the iron first...
Drag soldering is a pretty standard way of hand soldering small pin pitch SMD packages. Fast and effective.
Hey,
I know the video is already one year old, but I really like the style of your GC. Any hint where I could find the parts for a shell replacement or did you spray them by yourself?
Yo dude, thank you! The paint was put on there by a very talented artist named pucho magic. I actually have a video dedicated to its build here if you want to check it out ua-cam.com/video/Yl1-Wu--FDs/v-deo.html
@@RockerGaming Wow just saw his IG, the stuff he does looks amazing, ngl. Thank you for the fast answer!
Can I not get these materials on Amazon? And what’s the max size of SD card for this mod ?
