    Kia ora Dr Natalie, you are a gem - and we are so extremely privileged in NZ to have you treating our people. I’m telling my mother’s whanau in the Far North to hide Ahipara. Great video. Nau mai te Tohunga Rangatira - welcome Chief Dr.

    We are incredibly blessed to have Natalie come to NZ with her wealth of experience and care for our patients. Rural medicine in NZ and Australia is notoriously hard to find enough local doctors for for some reason. I love that she’s African American, I really want to meet some African Americans in NZ and get to know them because they seem to be missing from our diverse cultural mix.

      Yes, I've met and known a few native (non-white) Africans, mostly from Kenya, and a couple of British ones, but off-hand I don't recall any from the USoA?

    4 weeks annual leave per year is the minimum here in NZ. 10 days sick leave per year + 11 days statutory holidays. if you work on statutory holidays you get paid a rate of 1.5 per hr + 1 day leave in lieu

    I have a friend who used to be a trauma surgeon in Bogota, Colombia. Worth repeating, a trauma surgeon in BOGOTA. Last time I talked to him he was driving an Uber. The insane hoops overseas professionals have to go thru to get even a start in the NZ system is a tragedy. I admire Dr Newman's tenacity.

      You can thank a struck off Nurse from the UK coming here for that, then an Indian coming in claiming he was a Doctor, when he was not.
      We have had a Doctor from Africa place a DNR on a patient without discussing it with her next of kin, until he came to visit her in hospital, and kicked up a stink.
      We also had another Doctor place a totally separate line in my mother without informing her, or her next of kin, until she woke up, and told them to take it out. She was furious when she was told it was for training purposes, which is assault here without consent.

    Great to hear your positive experience of NZ! I came here from Skandinavia 40 years ago precisely because it was more humane here and I was right as the medical system is falling apart there now but here people are still treated with respect, even if its unfortunately changed a bit now due to the convid I think it will get better again. We really need people like you here now so welcome to a slower better future!

    Maori were here before NZ was NZ. This treaty was signed in 1840 between some Maori chiefs and reps of the Queen Victoria who were stationed in Aussie. Two versions of the treaty were written but the Maori translation was not the same as the English. Of course English version says they ruled the Maori said shared governance which did not happen so now days Maori are demanding shared governance

    NZ is a funny little place. We punch above our own weight in many areas and in other areas where we have an opportunity to do better we can make it really difficult.
    Thank you for choosing NZ and our rural communities to share your knowledge and skills with. It is these areas that struggle to have access to experts such as yourself. The NZ medical council was probably concerned that you would get frustrated/bored and leave. That’s what tends to happen with our own; they level up and then go out in the world to chase their game.
    I’m pleased it worked out for you and I hope it’s everything you were hoping it would be

    Our ICUs are essential in our cultural world, I stayed with my late wife in the ICU for a week sleeping in a chair. Until she passed away, then twice again with dear friend sadly she passed away, we are helped to assist them to pass on when they have absolutely no change. We are but a small country,

    So glad you were tenacious enough to get here. It makes me angry that we put good people like yourself through the wringer when another person from overseas can walk into a role with no qualifications and not get caught until months later. We are crying out for medical personnel but unfortunately the current government doesn’t see it a priority to make the process of working here easy.

    In New Zealand we have ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation). As a result, the term “medical misadventure” is not relevant and is considered an adversarial term. Here it’s called “Treatment Injury”. All accidents that cause injury are covered by ACC. It can be likened to insurance, but there are no premiums. It is primarily funded by employers. Industries that have a high mortality rate from accidents, like forestry pay more. Employers of, e.g., accountants pay less. Instead of suing, people put in a claim to ACC for compensation. ACC is a “No Fault” or “No Blame” system, so this negates the need to sue a registered health professional.

    • @carolkrishnan7842
      @carolkrishnan7842 Рік тому +1

      ACC is a government owned accident insurance. Its called a crown entity. The levies are collected a number of different ways.

    • @howstupidcanyoube100
      @howstupidcanyoube100 Рік тому +1

      @@carolkrishnan7842 they also control one of the biggest investment portfolios in the country. The investment alone in the ACC portfolio returned 4.8 billion dollars in 2021, around $1000 dollars per person. Value for money.

    • @sandralibeau4795
      @sandralibeau4795 Рік тому

      The ACC system hardly ever pays out and even then it is only at the level of one fifth as much as other western nations. There is a Health and Disability Commissioner too, who does very little!

    • @sandralibeau4795
      @sandralibeau4795 Рік тому

      ACC levies are also paid by cars, motorcycles and every worker!

    • @chrisheath5233
      @chrisheath5233 Рік тому

      @@sandralibeau4795 Workers do not pay ACC. It’s the employer who is levied and the amount of the levy depends on the business description (which is assigned an ACC classification unit), how much employees are paid, and the number of claims the business has made. If an employer or industry pays more, it’s because they have a lot of accidents relative to other employers and industries. Good employers will invest in safer business practices to mitigate serious harm or death to employees. This in time will reduce their levies. If they don’t and incidents of serious harm and death continue, businesses risk prosecution.

    New Zealand Universal Health Care system is funded by 13% of the GDP.
    You can buy private insurance, ACC insurance is compulsory to cover any accidents and paid recovery.
    New Zealand employment laws mean you get 10 days sick leave and 20 days annual leave,
    +extra after 5 years,
    New Zealand military is only 15k of professional forces and costs 2%of our GDP,
    we are buying new P8 Boeing planes for our Maritime concerns.

    Just to clarify a couple of points around the 18 minute mark---the term 'kiwi' encompasses ALL New Zealanders, not just those of European ancestry.
    Following on to that-Maori tribes made a treaty with the British Government & Crown in 1840, not the "NZ government" as was said here.

    It was a long time coming to recognize Maori cultural aspects. Thank goodness we are getting there. Australia the indigenous were treated as Fauna until the 70's. Canada is getting there, and U.S. - who knows? I said to my nephew a couple of decades ago to move back to the Northern hemisphere if he doesnt like the culture here....thank goodness the old colonialist generation is dying out. We need compassion and lack of fear. Treat people as fellow humans x

    the govt Accident Compensation Corpn (ACC) means it is not so litigious. the employers pay an annual ACC fee depending on the type of industry as some induties are riskier thM others and also how many employees in a company.

    Just heard you call NZ home 😊 glad youre enjoying the country, I hope it keeps treating you well.
    Whangarei is a Maori word which is why "wh" is pronounced like "f". If you have time and if you can find access learn the Maori alphabet. This will help you with pronounciation better. It may help you understand a little better too.
    Every employment contract is suppose to ask if you want to join a union. There are a few contracts that dont have that tho.

    I was born in New Zealand Palmerston North Hospital in 1970 . I lived a very healthy happy vaccinated middle class life with my mum and dad and 7 yr older sister . At the age of 16 I became pregnant to a long term boyfriend , had a beautiful daughter at 17 and continued living with my mum. My father been very old school 20 years older than my mum didn't take to my pregnancy like my mum eventually did so mum and dad went their separate ways. When I was 23 and had had my second child a boy he was nearly 6months old when i became ill . Eventually after a long stay in hospital giving up breastfeeding they diagnosed me with either Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis , They surmised I had caught a super bug after having a caught this tummy bug , that never seemed to go away , my family doctor at the time tried me on several diff antibiotics , I dont know weather this contributed to the development of the Ulcerative colitis or from me just been a very tired mum with a colicky baby who hardly slept unless been held. I came out of hospital on a number of medications , prednisone , and something else . But a year and a half later after nothing changing the medication didn't seem to help I decided to get a colectomy surgery resulting in a colostomy , then a decade later had my rectum removed .So Ive had my fair stay in hospital and what Ive noticed in the early years of my stays in the hospital it was pristine always gleaming and clean , all rooms and beds were done daily , staff didnt seem to be in shortage. Meals were done on site , so were nice and piping hot . What Ive seen now from visiting with my mum on a couple of her stays , is its so unclean and I mean the same grime on a wall that was there months previous , Floors never seem to be cleaned as for rooms there are no cleaners at all coming in . Beds well ,they make them the day you get there and that is it , till you leave and I mean not even remade. Meals come from somewhere off site and I mean the Palmerston North Hospital had its own huge Kitchen in the earlier years with wonderful meals. But its the cleanliness that gets to me the most and lack of staff , it is so cruel on the staff to treat them that way especially , Its a shame and makes you angry .
