- The fledgling Girls Aloud. Includes the girls being punished for being such bad singers by being taken to a Westlife album launch. Shame Aimee didn't make the band. I met her on Clea's 'ASDA Tour' - a really nice girl.
Sarah tragically died September 5th 2021 aged just 39 from cancer, tis is how she started her journey to fame with Girls Aloud, she will be greatly missed RIP Sarah.
Her death was well publicised.
Its so sad Sarah saying she would be turning 21 then and now she died just before her 40th.

This makes me feel so old. I remember watching this and hoping Nadine got in after what happened in the Irish show popstars and the band Six. She lied she was 18 when she was 16 and the group still wanted her but as she lied the producers said she had to go. Louie really wanted her in this band in popstars the rivals. Despite a no 1 in tons of countries Six was basically ditched I heard by Simon's company so he could consentrate on pop idol etc. Pity Nadine's solo career did not take off more. I think having her album exclusively at Tesco was a huge mistake. Her voice is fabulous.

Gosh, yes, I noticed that too. So sad. Sarah didn't reach age 40, and Tara passed away before age 50, I think. Both gone way too soon. xx
@@sheila6186 they were both two of my childhood idols - loved them, I was lucky enough to meet Sarah once when I was about 16, and I got such a lovely message from Tara, around a year before she passed away… it’s so so sad :( xx

To be fair (and I'm not just saying this because she's no longer with us), Sarah sang brilliantly here. She jumped to some very high notes with great ease and sang her heart out. She put on a great performance and more-than-earned her place in the band. Sarah was the special sparkle in Girls Aloud -- without her, they wouldn't have shone so brightly.
Amy looks like her parents could be Kerry katona and Bryan McFadden
It’s so interesting watching this and seeing the original dynamics - Kimberley and Nadine, Nicola and Aimee, Cheryl and Javine and Sarah sort of being the lone wolf - and knowing what would become.
I remember how surprised I was to kind of find out and notice Nadine and Kim not being as close during the band years because it was so clear that they were during the show and they almost felt like sisters to me.
@@JOTennisVidCheryl’s trial is partially what brought her, Nicola and Kim together. That and staying in the same complex when the band was formed. Sarah and Nadine lived on their own. Really sad that there was some infighting and that it took a death to end the pettiness, but at least they made up when it counted I suppose.

Wow, Nicola turned 35 a few days ago (5 Oct 2020). Time flies, she was just 16 here.
As for Aimee, she could sing decent but was really bland, no charisma.

True. Aimee could sing well, but her voice lacked an interesting quality/sound and, yeah, she didn't have charisma. I think the public picked the right girls for the band.

Nicola was brilliant! Shame on them hiding her away when she got in the group, and she didn't make the top 10 first time why? Her voice is tremendous. And they knew it but Pete was all about image. Nicola wanted some feedback but instead Pete started a talk about how stupid they were to feel nervous (!) and Geriatric said she wasn't Northern enough in her performance abd too grown up.. (the above was predictive text but I'm cross with the woman so I'm keeping it!😃) Nicola deserved so, I checked better and u could tell Davina thought so. Nicola was as strong as vocalist as Nadine but the media mocking her , the management ignoring her and her own nerves meant she got pushed to the back. 😢 Well at least by the time she had that fierce bob 👱 she was a full on Diva and working it!!

Cheryl is a great entertainer and she can sing. I admire her and the life she had before she was successful. So well done all off the girls too have come so far. And as for Sarah, if Sarah was still alive, she would have become a brilliant solo artist. I bet she is watching all off them know and rooting for them😂 .

Pop girl bands aren’t all about vocals though. Certain members need to look a certain way and Cheryl excelled with charisma which the band would have lacked without her.

I don't understand why everyone is saying Javine was robbed - absolutely, she was a great singer, but it wasn't some great conspiracy, it was a public vote. I'm pretty sure we all know why she ended up being not as "popular" as cheryl if we're honest about it.

I actually expected her to be much better than she was here and with a stronger voice, maybe wrong song choice though, she's not bad.
Tbh, I didn't think Javine was a great singer. Her voice strikes me as being slightly abrasive and hard on the ears. She wasn't bad by any means, but I just didn't find her voice pleasant to listen to.

So interesting seeing this again as I remember so little of it! Thoughts:
AIMEE - sad to say probably the weakest performance. She was cute and likeable but I notice she's the only one who got an upbeat song. Unfortunately her performance was very unconvincing and lacked... well anything really lol Nice girl but zero charisma
JAVINE - just not likeable in any way. Too sure of herself, looks like she'd glass you behind a Wetherspoon's if you gave her boyfriend the side eye. A very weak performance where she seemed to be showing off a voice she didn't actually have lol. Arguing with a judge just makes you look like a troublemaker; no doubt the public see that kind of thing as a threat. Her not getting through was never about race - she just blew it completely in this episode
KIMBERLEY - a good all-rounder, not really outstanding in any way but competent at everything, likeable and charming and her performance was tasteful
CHERYL - she was one of two who I think was always going to get through no matter what (the other being Nadine). The public had just taken to her. Although Nothing Compares 2 U is a bit big for her limited voice, she has an emotional voice and that came through well, so in that sense it was a good song choice
SARAH - definitely another one you just had a feeling about. She was the fun, happy-go-lucky party girl everyone could relate to yet she was humble. Her performance was perhaps surprisingly good, hitting some big notes very well. God rest her soul x
NADINE - an absolute cert. I think even here everyone knew she had the best voice by far. Her performance was a bit pitchy but when she was on the money she was great; there is just such a warmth to the timbre of her voice that draws you in and captivates you. The most charismatic of the girls IMO
NICOLA - I've never been a huge fan of her voice but to my great surprise, she gave arguably the best performance of the night. Her low range was a bit dodgy but when she hit those highs, she really found her feet. But she was kind of unusual, and at the time it was difficult to say whether people would see her as a bit odd, or endearingly eccentric. Luckily for us, it was the latter
And finally, Pete Waterman is a massive arsehole :)

Your assessment was excellent! I happen to agree with pretty much every point you made. So true about Javine looking like someone who might glass you! Lol. She definitely came across as being too fierce.
Nadine, Cheryl and Sarah were absolute guarantees for the band from the start. That was obvious. Nadine had the voice, Cheryl had the pretty looks and cute Geordie accent, and Sarah had the special sparkle.
I think Nicola was chosen because, as you said, she gave a surprisingly good performance on this night, and also because I actually think some of the public wanted a redhead in the band (not long before this show, remember The Spice Girls had Ginger Spice). Btw, I'm not a fan of her voice either -- not then, and not now (her voice is too 'weedy'/whiny/thin for my taste).
Kimberley's appeal was her rather sensual, Jennifer Lopez-type look and her overall likeability.
And, yes, Pete Waterman is a massive arsehole here! ;)

I agree, I honestly don’t know how Cheryl got into the band other than for her looks. Right from the beginning of the show to this very day her voice is very mediocre.… Just my opinion.
@@david1321riding I’m not going to say you’re wrong because her looks are part of why she became so much more successful than the other girls. But she also has charisma and she’s very likeable. Plus her vocals aren’t even bad, they’re just not amazing. She’s also great at mixing harmonies with the group and she has quite a distinctive voice.

Nadine and Nicola (Roberts), the youngest two, were the best by miles from the off. Thanks to Louis' stupidity, Nicola would not have even been in the live shows because, according to him (a gay man), she didn't look like a pop star. The coward even sent Pete to break the news to her, even though Pete was in charge of the boys group and Nicola was his favourite from the start.
A huge voting campaign in the north-east got Cheryl into the band on that murder of Nothing Compares to You.

@@sarahmurphy8030 Cheryl did say, she didn't know how she got in. Her nerves got the best of her, but people saw something in her, an aura very few people have (as Pete Waterman said) , and voted for her. Sometimes good voice isn't enough, you have to have something special, and she does.
Just seeing this for the first time. My favorite part was when Sarah belted out the end of I’ll be there. Not easy to do.

Javine should have been a shoe in. A woman of colour, a strong singer and had personality. But hey, I can’t imagine GA being any different. I liked every one of them so much. Even when we lost Nadine to the classic lead-singer-ego-fallout. Still love them all. RIP Sarah, such a loss
'A woman of colour !' We had the Spice Girls, Eternal, The Sugar babies, All saints, that style was done, and they wanted Javine to be a solo artist. Plus, she was significantly taller than the other girls.
On this, looking back on it the bottom 2 were right. I actually agree that Aimee was marginally worse than Cheryl and Kimberley that week, so it was the right decision for her to go home that week.

I think Sarah and Nicola sang the best- great song, great vocals! RIP Sarah. Cheryl may not have the best voice, but she has the best personality and strong charisma. And her voice improved over the years. I think Cheryl performed better than Amy that night-Amy just sounded plain. Cheryl was meant to be a superstar, not because she has the best voice, but because she was and is genuinely a great person.

Pete produced the boys’ single and signed them with Jive. He was closely partnered with that label since Steps. Probably why he didn’t cared much about the girls.

Aimee was just diabolical. Couldn't find the right key if someone handed it to her. You know you're shite when you're not even as good as Cheryl; which is already an incredibly low bar to pass.

The Vocal Coach Lawrence Johnson and his Assistant Rico are amazing. What's so "Sick" is that they are working with Four Of The Five Future Members Of Girls Aloud not realizing that future Legends are being created. Cheryl and Javine seemed to be "tight" back in the day but I didn't like how she looked in the Background when they were working. Even Eden's Crush (US Popstars) didn't have a Vocal Coach as good as these guys. I've noticed on a lot of These Shows their Vocal Coach or Choreographer are Black. On the other hand they work with them because they know that they can make more "Bank" off of a White Act than a Black Act. Timbaland & Pharrell Williams can attest to that since they worked with everyone from Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Robin Thicke, One Republic, Nelly Furtado. Although Pharrell also worked with Jay Z, Snoop Dog, Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes some have fallen off of The Music Map.
Yeah, Cheryl mentioned in her book before that she had become really close to Javine during the show, and she was genuinely shocked and saddened that she didn't make it into the band.
