The example being given is that of fruit separating from its base which seems more profound than just asking for saving from death - it is like breaking free from bandhan (attachment).
Yes, at 11:46 he even says that sayanacharya has given the meaning of this mantra as "let me have freedom from samsara" i.e., it is talking about freedom from attachment and rebirth cycle and getting to a state of "amrita", i.e., when there is no more death, meaning realization of the eternal self.

The three-eyed fragrant one who increases health and prosperity I invoke there, I am tied to life like a gourd, therefore I am just praying for freedom from impending death and I am not asking for immortality.
The verse Mritormukshimamritaat .. our scriptures call us as Amritasya putras.. children of immortality ..so we cannot be separate from that nectarine immortality , but free ourselves from death of all our worldly attachments and ego etc ..
A genuine question. Doesn't this shlokam mean that we want to be relieved from the cycle of birth and death ( mrithyu bandhan and samsaaram) and become one with the paramatma ,( aka Amrutha)??? In other words, the ultimate freedom from death and suffering that being born again and again brings; and achieve union with the divine ( moksha)?
Yes. I disagree with his interpretation which is a very basic, literal and wrong understanding of the mantra. There is no word in the mantra which means akaal mrityu or long life. Why is he inserting his own words in a very simple and straightforward mantra?? We are asking "triyambak" shiva to separate us from attachment and thus the eternal cycle of rebirths just like a ripe fruit separates from its vine without much efforts, and achieve amrita, i.e., a state where there is no more death because the self has realized its true immortal state. At 11:46 he even tells that sayanacharya has written the meaning as "freedom from samsara" which clearly means the cycle of rebirths, but then he again inserts the word "mrityu" in it out of nowhere. Shiva is being referred to as "triyambak" in this mantra, and not with some other name, for this reason only, because the third eye symbolises true gyaan and self-realization.
Pranam Nityanand Ji; kya amratv ko pane ka matlab mrutu se chootna nahi hai ? aur agar IS mantra mein swarg ki manokamna hai to kya swarg mein maran nahi hai ? agar hai ? to phir aap ka bhaav visodhabhase nahi ha ? kya swarg aur nirvan mein sanatan dharm mein fark kiya gaya hai ? ya dono ek hain ? agan dono ek hain to kya nirvan ki parikalpana sanatan dharm main nahi hai ? shravan dharm ki parkalpana ke anusaar swarg aur nark dono sthaee hain nirvan ki mukti hai. krapya is par ek karyakram karen.

Nahi, sayanacharya ne aisa nahi likha. Weh bata rahe hain ki ambak shabd ke do arth ho sakte hain 1) netra, aur 2) pita. Lekin yahan netra shabd hi grahya hai. Kyunki mantra samsara chakra se mukti ki prarthna kar raha hai jo ki manushya ke ajna chakra yani teesre netra ke khulne ke pashchat hi sambhav hai. Isiliye shiv ji ko bhi triyambak naam se sambodhit kiya hai kyunki shiv ji ka teesra netra agyan ko nasht karne wala hai.

Thanks for explaining so nicely.. Can you pls address this aspect also, even though people recite this mantra, there can be akaal mrityu.. Pls don't judge me but want to ask u this...I heard sushant singh was a big practitioner of this mantra, yet he met an untimely death... So how do we explain that... Although my personal belief is that he has conquered death by making suchva big impact, but still, can we say that this mantra has limitations???
This mantra is not about akaal mrityu. There is no word in the mantra which talks about akaal mrityu or long life. It is simply a mantra where we are praying to "triyambak" shiva to loosen our attachment from this samsara cycle like a ripe fruit separates from its vine without much effort, and attain a state of "amrita", i.e., when there is no more death because the self has realized its true eternal nature. That's why shiva is referred to as "triyambak" in this mantra and not with any other name, because the third eye of shiva or ajna chakra symbolises true gyaan and self-realization.

I understand sugandhi to be a reference to the earth. Gandha is the tanmatra of Prithvi. I understand sugandhim pushtivardhanam to be a reference to the one who nourishes the earth to nourish the beings on earth. Otherwise, it would be just pushtikaaranam, not pushtivardhanam.

The biggest problem with the Mahamrityunjaya mantra today: Urvärukamiva Bandhanät - meaning literally 'just like the cucumber is released from bondage'. "Cucumbers or melons are fruits which grow on creepers or vines. A fully grown cucumber is called urvärukam. Just as a ripe cucumber is easily severed or detached from the creeper, in the same manner, 'O Lord, effortlessly free me from bondage of this samsära (world of plurality, delusion, sorrow)'. The world as we know it, is also like a creeper; it not only creeps up on you, but also clings to you. But a ripe cucumber is easily detached from the creeper. That is why our Rishis say that we should never pick an unripe fruit - because it hurts the plant. With a ripe fruit, however, you just touch it and it comes off into your hand. In a similar vein we pray: 'Let my attachment to the universe fall off me effortlessly.' The cucumber vine generally grows on the ground and when the fruit is ripe, the stalk that binds it to the plant dries out, but the fruit obviously does not fall from a distance. While the cucumber does not get damaged this way, it still has to be picked at the right time or else it will start decaying in the field or drop its seeds and produce unhealthy competition. Similarly, we too need a gardener in life to come and 'pluck' us before we decay. Who is that gardener? It is Lord Shiva in the form of the Guru, the Guru Tattva (principle)." (The above explanation is taken from a book on Mahamrityunjaya Mantra by Jai Paul Dudecha (without his permission!) but this wrong interpretation of Urvarukamiva as 'just like a cucumber' has been made by EVERYBODY and even the great Sayanacharya made the same blunder 700 years back in his commentary on the Rig-Veda). Ever since the beginning of my journey into knowing and understanding of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra with learning and chanting this mantra that began in the year 2003 this cucumber came in my way and I was unable to fathom just how and why I am supposed to think of myself as a CUCUMBER!! How can there be even a comparison between a human being and a cucumber???!! This question hung over my head like the Damocles' sword and over a period of 17 years this sword kept growing bigger and bigger as I practiced chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. There came a phase, in 2015-16, when I used to break down in tears while chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra and the circumstances of my life were such that many times I banged my head against the wall in desperation begging Bholenath for mercy. But such was the intensity of my japa and my growing belief in the mantra that my high blood sugar (I was diagnosed as as diabetic in 2013 but I refused the medicines after 2 months of medication and I decided that I will not take the medicines for diabetes even if that resulted in Death!). But even when I saw for myself the miracles of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra many times I dropped the japa of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra in exasperation over this damned cucumber as my inner voice refused to accept this supposed comparison with a damned cucumber and I would stay away from this mantra for months and months. But then, in 2015, I began exploring the Monier Williams Sanskrit English dictionary to find the word-by-word meaning of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra for myself and found that the word 'Urvärukamiva' is actually a compound of 3 words - urvāru, áruka, and iva. urvāru, us (L.), ús, m. f. a species of cucumber, Cucumis Usitatissimus, AV. vi, 14, 2; (a), n. the fruit of Cucumis Usitatissimus, Tandya Br.; (cf. irvāru.) áruka, mfn. hurting, injuring, TÃr. i, 5, 2; (am), n. the fruit of a medicinal plant grow- ing on the Himalaya mountains, L. iva, ind. (fr. pronominal base 3. i), like, in the same manner as (in this sense yatha, and used correlatively to tatha); as it were, as if (e. g. patheva, as if on a path); in a certain manner, in some measure, a little, perhaps (in qualification or mitigation of a strong assertion); nearly, almost, about (e. g. muhurtam iva, almost an hour); so, just so, just, exactly, indeed, very (especially after words which involve some restriction, e. g. ishad ivu, just a little; kimcid iva, just a little bit: and after a nega- tion, e. g. na cirad iva, very soon). Iva is connected vaguely, and somewhat pleonastically, with an inter- rogative pronoun or adverb (e. g. kim iva, what? katham iva, how could that possibly be? kueva, where, I should like to know?). In the Pada texts of the Rig, Yajur, and Atharva-veda, and by native grammarians, iva is considered to be enclitic, and therefore compounded with the word after which it stands, RV.; AV. &c. &c. Ivôpama, f. a kind of simile (in which iva is employed), Bhatt. x, And I was left puzzled as to why in the word Urvärukamiva - both the words urvāru & áruka mean the SAME things. Now, if both these two words meant rhe same thing then very obviously Rishi Vasishth would not have used both words here. Something was certainly wrong here!!! And then in 2021, during my TB episode, I discovered how the 24-akshara Gayatri mantra was distorted into the 23-akshara Gayatri mantra and this secret was known only by handful of Brahmins who secretly use the 24-akshara Gayatri for their silent japa practice of Sandhya Upasana while publically only uttering the 23-akshara Gayatri mantra. And then I discovered the book - Rig-Veda : A Metrically Restored Text published by the Harvard University Press. This book exposes the corruption in the Rig-Veda chhandas (metre) and attempts to set that right. Now this book is the result of more than 150 years of study of the Rig-Veda in the West that was begun by Max Mueller and cannot be taken lightly. And this book shows how the Anustubha chhanda of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra was destroyed/corrupted and presented the original form of the mantra - triyambakam yajamahe (8-aksharas) sugandhim puştivárdhanam (8-aksharas) urvarukám 'va bándhanat (8-aksharas) mṛtyór mukşiya mámŕtāt (8-aksharas) It came as a shock to me and for many months I was in a state of denial, just refusing to accept that this indeed WAS the original form of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. However, it was indeed true that the 3rd stanza of the extant Mahamrityunjaya mantra - Urvärukamiva Bandhanät - did indeed contain 9-aksharas instead of 8-aksharas as necessitated by the strict requirement of the Anustubha-chhanda and this is where lies the test of the extant version of the Mahamrityunjay (also, the 1st stanza of the extant version contains only 7-aksharas instead of the required 8-aksharas). But thereafter, I opened the Monier-Williams dictionary again and found some interesting stuff again - Urú, mf(ri)n.(v1.rṛi; ✅ūrṇu,Uņ.i,32), wide, broad, spacious, extended, great, large, much, excessive, excellent, RV.; AV.; MBh.; Ragh.; (us), m., N. of an Angirasa, ArshBr.; of a son of the fourteenth Mann, BhP.; VP.; (77), f. the earth; áruka, mfn. hurting, injuring, TÃr. i, 5, 2; (am), n. the fruit of a medicinal plant grow- ing on the Himalaya mountains, L. (THE 1st MEANING HAS TO BE CONSIDERED HERE) va, (only L.) m. air, wind; the arin; N. of Varuna; the ocean, water; addressing; rever- ence; conciliation; auspiciousness; a dwelling; a tiger; cloth; the esculent root of the water-lily; (a), f. going; hurting; an arrow; weaving; a weaver (?); n. a sort of incantation or Mantra (of which the ob- ject is the deity Varuna); pra-cetas; min. strong, powerful. And this CHANGES the meaning of the 3rd stanza of the Mahamriyunjaya mantra very dramatically, and THIS MEANING IS IN LINE with the meaning of the other 3 stanzas of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra and makes this mantra comprehensible as there is no cucumber present in this mantra anymore!
I bow down to the extent of research you have done on the meaning of this shloka but I have a humble representation to make. The comparison is not between the cucumber and the human being, per se, but what happens to a ripe cucumber and what should happen to a human at the time of exit from samsara. Also please explain briefly the new meaning that you derived ( detailed at the end of your post).
@@jp-jb1bw There is no cucumber present in the 3rd stanza at all. Urvarukam Va Bandhanat means "release us from the massive and hurting tight bonds of pain and misery". I reiterate again that there is no cucumber present here. The "massive and hurting tight bonds" could be also taken to mean the 6 enemies - lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride, and jealousy.
@@rudrakshaexpert-theeyeofrudra dhanyavaad for the explanation. Another query- why is it that across our country, the cucumber related explanation is accepted widely? There should be a shaasthraarth- an insightful discussion on the same.
@@jp-jb1bw The cucumber meaning has come about because of the word "iva" which means "like" and is used to denote a simile. In the Rg-Veda the word "iva" has often been used in place of "va" but "va" has multiple meanings in the Rg-Veda. Also, the meaning of the word "Urvarukam" is given as a "variety of cucumber that grows in the Himalayas" in dictionaries but strangely nobody has ever seen that variety of cucumber! Here, in the 12th Richa of the 59th Sukta of the 7th Mandala, the Richa that is widely known as the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, "va" is used as a verb. It seems more than a thousand years ago many Richas of the Rg-Veda were deliberately corrupted by few great scholars of the Rg-Veda to protect them from mass use and they have come down to us in that corrupted form. Also, it must be understood, that the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra can be only chanted as per either the unique intonation systems of either the Rg-Veda, or the Krishna Yajur-Veda Taittiriya Shakha, or the Shukla Yajur-Veda Madhyandini Shakha to get proper results. Yes, a shashtrartha is needed and I am ready for that with anybody on this planet. I believe in the efficacy of the restored version of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and I am ready to prove that..Jai Bholenath!

The three-eyed fragrant one who increases health and prosperity I invoke there, I am tied to life like a gourd, therefore I am just praying for freedom from impending death and I am not asking for immortality.
In mrityorMa & maAmritat, ma negates the word it is conjoined with.
महोदय नेहरू के आगे पंडित लगाकर इस शब्द का अपमान ना करें ।
The verse Mritormukshimamritaat .. our scriptures call us as Amritasya putras.. children of immortality ..so we cannot be separate from that nectarine immortality , but free ourselves from death of all our worldly attachments and ego etc ..
Very good job sir
Sir kya aap esi pustak ke naam denge jisme Gautam Buddhaji ne Vishnu ke avatar hone ka swikar Kiya hai. Please
I agree with you.
Amrit is not equal to heaven.
@@000Aful it's not his interpretation, he is quoting sayanacharaya's interpretation, i feel he has done good justice to bhava of the mantra

Nahi, sayanacharya ne aisa nahi likha. Weh bata rahe hain ki ambak shabd ke do arth ho sakte hain 1) netra, aur 2) pita. Lekin yahan netra shabd hi grahya hai. Kyunki mantra samsara chakra se mukti ki prarthna kar raha hai jo ki manushya ke ajna chakra yani teesre netra ke khulne ke pashchat hi sambhav hai. Isiliye shiv ji ko bhi triyambak naam se sambodhit kiya hai kyunki shiv ji ka teesra netra agyan ko nasht karne wala hai.

Thanks for explaining so nicely.. Can you pls address this aspect also, even though people recite this mantra, there can be akaal mrityu.. Pls don't judge me but want to ask u this...I heard sushant singh was a
big practitioner of this mantra, yet he met an untimely death...

The biggest problem with the Mahamrityunjaya mantra today:
Urvärukamiva Bandhanät - meaning literally 'just like the cucumber is released from bondage'.
In a similar vein we pray: 'Let my attachment to the universe fall off me effortlessly.'
The cucumber vine generally grows on the ground and when the fruit is ripe, the stalk that binds it to the plant dries out, but the fruit obviously does not fall from a distance. While the cucumber does not get damaged this way, it still has to be picked at the right time or else it will start decaying in the field or drop its seeds and produce unhealthy competition. Similarly, we too need a gardener in life to come and 'pluck' us before we decay. Who is that gardener? It is Lord Shiva in the form of the Guru, the Guru Tattva (principle)."
(The above explanation is taken from a book on Mahamrityunjaya Mantra by Jai Paul Dudecha (without his permission!) but this wrong interpretation of Urvarukamiva as 'just like a cucumber' has been made by EVERYBODY and even the great Sayanacharya made the same blunder 700 years back in his commentary on the Rig-Veda).
But then, in 2015, I began exploring the Monier Williams Sanskrit English dictionary to find the word-by-word meaning of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra for myself and found that the word 'Urvärukamiva' is actually a compound of 3 words - urvāru, áruka, and iva.
urvāru, us (L.), ús, m. f. a species of cucumber, Cucumis Usitatissimus, AV. vi, 14, 2; (a), n. the fruit of Cucumis Usitatissimus, Tandya Br.; (cf. irvāru.)
áruka, mfn. hurting, injuring, TÃr. i, 5, 2; (am), n. the fruit of a medicinal plant grow- ing on the Himalaya mountains, L.
iva, ind. (fr. pronominal base 3. i), like, in the same manner as (in this sense yatha, and used correlatively to tatha); as it were, as if (e. g. patheva, as if on a path); in a certain manner, in some measure, a little, perhaps (in qualification or mitigation of a strong assertion); nearly, almost, about (e. g. muhurtam iva, almost an hour); so, just so, just, exactly, indeed, very (especially after words which involve some restriction, e. g. ishad ivu, just a little; kimcid iva, just a little bit: and after a nega- tion, e. g. na cirad iva, very soon). &c. &c. Ivôpama, f. a kind of simile (in which iva is employed), Bhatt. x,
And I was left puzzled as to why in the word Urvärukamiva - both the words urvāru & áruka mean the SAME things.
And this book shows how the Anustubha chhanda of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra was destroyed/corrupted and presented the original form of the mantra -
triyambakam yajamahe (8-aksharas)
sugandhim puştivárdhanam (8-aksharas)
urvarukám 'va bándhanat (8-aksharas)
mṛtyór mukşiya mámŕtāt (8-aksharas)
It came as a shock to me and for many months I was in a state of denial, just refusing to accept that this indeed WAS the original form of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. But thereafter, I opened the Monier-Williams dictionary again and found some interesting stuff again -
Urú, mf(ri)n.(v1.rṛi; ✅ūrṇu,Uņ.i,32), wide, broad, spacious, extended, great, large, much, excessive, excellent, RV.; AV.; MBh.; Ragh.; (us), m., N. of an Angirasa, ArshBr.; of a son of the fourteenth Mann, BhP.; VP.; (77), f. the earth;
áruka, mfn. hurting, injuring, TÃr. i, 5, 2; (am), n. the fruit of a medicinal plant grow- ing on the Himalaya mountains, L. (THE 1st MEANING HAS TO BE CONSIDERED HERE)
va, (only L.) m. air, wind; the arin; N. of Varuna; the ocean, water; addressing; rever- ence; conciliation; auspiciousness; a dwelling; a tiger; cloth; the esculent root of the water-lily; (a), f. going; hurting; an arrow; weaving; a weaver (?); n. a sort of incantation or Mantra (of which the ob- ject is the deity Varuna); pra-cetas; min. strong, powerful.
