My 23 3500drw 6.6 tows very well. I've made 3 trips between Maryland and Florida with a 4 horse trailer and haven't had an issue. Getting around 10mpg loaded and 16 empty.
Doing God's work posting this already. 🙏 Thank you!! I have a 2021 DenaliHD with the 6.6 gas and although I have little to complain about with this powertrain this looks like a HUGE improvement!
First one on UA-cam for the ‘24 HD gas!!
I've been hearing a lot of praise for this 6.6L unit. It's got plenty of potential for the aftermarket too.
Was hoping you'd be able to take this truck out for a spin and show the 0-60 with the new 10 speed after I saw it on your Instagram. Pretty impressive, really do like the 6.6 gas from what I've seen so far. Great spec on this one as well! Hoping to see a glimpse of an LT single cab with that new interior sometime.
Thanks for posting this! Just ordered a '24 Sierra HD AT4 gasser. This is very helpful! Man, did it need this better transmission. That 6-speed was a dinosaur that really hurt the gas engine's performance.
Cool video, thank you! Can't wait for mine to arrive! Selling my '22 Powerstroke Tremor for a 2024 AT4 with the 6.6 gasser. So excited.
Good lord man
I have a white 24 AT4 gas on order as well. Build date is April 10th.
Liked and Subscribed for the towing test. I have a bigger boat and want to see how this setup does at either of the max trailer tow specs.
Nice. Seems like a smooth powertrain too.
That's quick af for an HD. Very impressed.

I bought a 2024 6.6l gas z71 this week. My Ram 6.4 had an engine failure at 145k miles. The Chevy isn't as snappy and fast as the hemi but I didn't buy it for that. It has wonderful low end torque and I tow 90% of the time. I am still breaking it in but hope to tow soon and compare that
Do you know how hard it is to get a red truck. In my area, Chevy says you can have any color you want as long as it is white.
The 6.6L Gas is way underrated. It's a great motor, and if you don't do a lot of towing, the 6 speed is a better transmission than the 10. It's good to have another option though for the "every day" haulers.
I agree...the 10 speed is a little on the busy side. The 6 speed did quite well when I used a 6.6 gas to pull my gooseneck.
@@truckguyjoe need to make them skip shift like the ford when not in tow haul
The 6.6 L with a six-speed transmission is exactly the engine transmission hookup I'm looking for in a 2022-2023 Chevy Express Cargo Van.
@@jeffreywolf5235 those are near impossible to get at the moment. 2023 model year Express/Savana are all 4.3 V6 unless it’s a cutaway…the V8 is available in a 3500 cutaway. Sadly 2022 is the final build out of the V8 vans
@@truckguyjoe I know my problem is that the only thing I'll buy. Glad I'm not in any Rush.. I will not take the 4.3 V6. I can't believe that they use that for a 1-ton base engine..
Please more on this 2024
Looks pretty good. Definitely stays wound up. I have a 2022 right now and I always say it needs another gear between 2nd and 3rd, especially towing on steep grades.
I noticed the same… Especially towing my gooseneck with the six speed version… This 10 speed definitely keeps it in the power band
@@truckguyjoe good to know. I probably will keep mine awhile longer. I’m coming up on 23,000 miles now with no issues. This is tempting though.
@@matthewanderson9912 I bought a 23 last fall and put an order in for a 24 back a month. I wanted the fresh from the beginning anyway, but needed a pickup in service for this spring. I think the 10 speed will be a game changer. My 23 does pretty good for a gas but there is a flat spot between 3rd to 4th that the 10 speed should really help with. If this thing tows like I think it will probably never buy another diesel. Still have a 2015 LML which I will keep for a long time, but these newer diesels are so high priced and so complex kind of looking forward to something more “simple”.
@@bradniehues9560 well I would like to have one because I do think it will be a very nice improvement towing grades. I’m not really complaining, but my biggest “complaint” is I always feel the 6 speed needs a gear between 2nd and 3rd. 2nd in the 6 speed is 2.36:1 and 3rd is 1.53:1. The 10 speed 2nd is 2.86:1 and then you have a 2.06:1 3rd and 1.72:1 4th and then 5th is 1.48:1.
So my thing is I have an 8% grade that’s 2 miles long on a four lane highway with a 55 mph speed limit. Right now I have to be going around 65 mph and go WOT to be able to top out the hill above 55 mph. The problem is 3rd gear is just too tall and can’t maintain the 65 mph and my speed will fall to about 52-53 mph and 3000-3100 rpm and then shift to 2nd gear. 2nd is too short and so I end up spinning up to over 5,000 rpm and nearly 65 mph before the truck has to upshift to 3rd. At that point the speed and rpm slowly falls down to about 56-57 mph before I top out the hill.
I really think the 10 speed will absolutely remedy that and will probably be able to pull the hill in 4th gear at around 54-56 mph. And if I need to accelerate it would do that too by shifting to 3rd and probably be able to do around 60 mph and probably be around 4000 rpm. But I don’t think I will trade. Interest rates are just too high and the rest of my grades are 6 and 7%. The 6% 3rd gear is plenty good to go 60 or better mph and the 7% I can hold 55 mph without having to force a downshift to 2nd. But if rebates start coming back or the interest rates fall I may get me one. Because I definitely love my current truck and the 10 speed will definitely make it better.
The lane change/passing part was all I needed to see. The 10 speed will let this 6.6 gas pull much better under load than the 6L90, even if 0-60mph wise its about the same as the 6 speed 6.6 gas.
Agreed...I want to put a trailer behind it to see how it handles merging and grades. The ratios in the 10-speed should make a huge improvement. Thanks for watching!
If only GM gives option on gear ratios in the rear like a choice of 4.10 for gas 4.30 diesels (2500 HD only plus max tow 4.30 for diesels) and up to 4.56 for diesel max tow in 3500 HD (4.30 gas) that will give it higher capacity for payload/towing and more low end grunt but mpg may be lower and men don't give a crap about that if you using it for it intended purposes.
@@brandedmcgowan9414 Huh? In adult, please.
I know y'all are trying to move these, not review them but really hoping you can get some seat time/MPG tests/towing tests w/the gasser. I've been waiting for the interior refresh and now it's down to gasser or diesel. Would love the diesel but not sure I'm willing to deal with all the hassles of the emissions systems on them. Love the content as always!
I am going to put out as much content as I can!
After 1 week with my new z71 I'll be lucky to get 14mpg hwy unloaded. Not good but I bought it to tow and fuel mileage isn't good on any of the 3/4 ton trucks
@@jamesengland7260 Just curious, how fast were your highway runs? I've seen multiple videos/posts where people are getting "decent" mileage at 65ish, but at 75+ it drops like a brick. Regardless, hope you are enjoying your new rig and that it gets better after it breaks in!
@brianklump I am just now breaking 500 miles for the break in period. I've tried to vary the speed for break in but most of the miles are on the hwy keeping it slow around 65
Halogens on a 2024 is absolutely crazy

You ever heard of a base model?
@@AJ_76421 15-18 model year all model HD Chevy and GMC had projector headlights not reflector, 16+ all model 1500’s had projector headlights with HID’s but in 19 they go back to halogen is what he is complaining about. @@AJ_76421 also, this is far from a base model being an LT and MSRP would be close to if not more than 60k. Z71 CCSB 4x4 with full digital interior and the new dash isn’t available in the first two trims.

have a 22' 2500 gasser and i can say i definitely do regret not waiting for this one to come out. not even because of the new interior because frankly, i like the older interior better as in my opinion its a lot more simple and driver-focused. but i wish i waited because of this new 10spd, the 6spd in the 20-23 feels super sluggish compared to the new allison.

I have a question joe. When ordering a new truck, either Gas or Diesel, is there a way for the buyer to know what the payload capacity will be before it arrives? I'm considering ordering a One Ton Diesel but only if the payload substantially exceeds what I already have with my 2020 2500HD Diesel which is 3315 pounds. Thank you!
Yes, you can use the GM Online Order Guide to reference this information. Check out this link. You can look at every model and configuration: www.gmfleetorderguide.com/NASApp/domestic/proddesc.jsp?year=2024®ionID=1&divisionID=1&type=0&vehicleID=22597§ion=specs&page=&butID=9
@@truckguyjoe Thank you!
Nice! How does that compare to your old 8.1? Love to see you run 0-60 with it.
I'm partial to that 496 cubic inch big block in my 2001...but this 2024 would walk all over my 8.1. This 6.6 gas is a snappy and happy revving motor. The 10 speed keeps it in the powerband very well.
Makes sense. It would still be an interesting comparison. The 6.6 keeps pulling strong high in the RPM band, but that 496 probably tapers off above 4k.
@@duggydo it definitely runs out of breath (the 8.1). Low end torque is outstanding though

You can order now… Order bank opened on January 19!
That's pretty good 0-60 for a vehicle north of 7000 lbs. Decent sound too. What is the tow rating on this particular configuration?
14,500 conventional, 16,970 gooseneck. If the truck had the 18 inch wheels or 20 inch wheels… That rating would be higher. for whatever reason the smaller wheel trucks like this have a lower tow rating and lower combination as well as lower gross vehicle weight. Also there is a max trailering package that will be coming out for gas and diesel.
@@truckguyjoe I never knew about the wheel sizes affecting the rating...interesting. Thank you for the information sir!
@@keithbraddehmann320 All a part of the tire load ratings. Trucks with the standard 17 inch wheels use a 121 load index tire and the ratings are published with that equipment. The 18 inch wheels use a much higher 125 load index tire which grants trucks with the 18 inch wheel a stronger payload and in some cases higher tow rating. Same goes for trucks with the 20s which use a 126 load index tire.
The only other application that gets actually DE-RATED on towing capacity is trucks like Alaskan Edition, Midnight and Z71 Sport that come with the 18 inch wheel but with the mud tire option. The mud tire they use is a 125 load index tire however, its tread design/compound was found to have handling concerns beyond 12,000lbs so trucks with that tire are de-rated down to 12,000lbs. Fortunately those special edtion trucks can be ordered with down to the standard 18 inch tire they use or in the case of the Midnight and Z71 Sport, can be optioned to 20s to restore that capacity.

Does it have a larger fuel tank? Those range numbers are high!

How's the oil consumption on the 6.6L gasser? Reading about consumption issues. GM thinks 1 quart consumed per 100 gallons of gasoline is "normal" haha 😂
No such oil consumption issues on the 7.3L Godzilla plus you get +29 hp, +21 lb-ft.
I believe every manufacturer considers 1 quart per 1000 acceptable, not just GM.
The Godzilla has its issues as well… Not hard to find the problem with that engine… It’s all out there. I have hundreds of customers with the 6.6 gas… And the percentage of them that have an oil consumption problem is next to nothing… I drove one for 10,000 miles…strictly towing a gooseneck and the truck did not use an ounce of oil… I have many repeat customers that are buying this engine as they add to their fleet. I’ve got customers with the 2020 model year which was the first year. Dump trucks, box trucks, stake bodies, Low cab forward, Isuzu NPR, no issues… My dealership has one of the largest commercial service departments within 300 miles. I keep a watch on everything going on… Quite frankly the most common issue we see are diesel trucks coming in with failing emissions components.
So how does it compare to a 20-22 the 6sp?
It's slightly slower 0-60 vs the 6 speed, based on my test of a 6.6 with 6 speed. I believe it's the gearing & the shift points that affect it. I will say that passing/merging acceleration is definitely quicker with the 10 speed. If we did a side-by-side roll from 50-80, the 10 speed would walk away. That's where the close ratio 4,5,6,7 gear shine!
I knew with the 10 speed Allison it would move better I wish GM made the 8.1 again as a big block lt & put the 10 speed Allison
They need a large displacement gas engine especially for their medium duty lineup. I’ve got an 8.1…it’s damn torquey
@@truckguyjoe I seen a 00-02 Chevy dually with the 8.1 I wanted to buy but I don’t know if it’s the right purchase
I heard a few years ago that they were working on a bigger V8 to fight against Ford Godzilla's 7.3L on more equal grounds.
Supposedly it was meant to be "over 8.0L". Surely would be nice to have that engine pushing some 450 hp and 500 lb-ft or more, while still working quite understressed.
Heck, at least a new 7.4L just to bring the "454" monicker back, plus could already surpass the Ford.
But I have my doubts. They're even replacing the 5.3L V8 in the light duty role for the 2.7 Turbo-4.
@@Roddy_Zeh They are definitely going backwards as far as engines for the light duty‘s… just give us the old-fashioned push rod V8! 💪
@@truckguyjoe I agree. I doubt these 4-bangers will last as long as the V8.
It'll be working under a lot more mechanical and thermal stress.

7.4 is not too bad consider the grades you probably were driving through at times. Hoping that will improve with the 10 speed.
With that fuel mileage it’s hard to justify the extra costs for the diesel. Although the DMax makes the heavy loads more enjoyable towing.
What’s your opinion on gasser over diesel
@@doug2202 if you're only towing a few times a year, the gas would be a good choice. Diesel does have the torque, and it's enjoyable to tow with that much grunt...but the diesel is $10K more...fuel costs more...and unfortunately the emissions systems are what make these modern diesels unreliable. Diesel is best for highway use. Day-to-day, stop & go, is hard on them (the particulate filter). I only tow with a diesel because of my CDL and I need a combination that's over 26K.
What’s the mpg with the 10 speed now?
Have not tested it yet… But I am guessing this truck will get approximately 16 on the interstate unladen. One thing I need to do is check the final drive ratio of the 10 speed vs the outgoing 6 speed.
@@truckguyjoe looking forward to seeing.
The 6th gear in the 6l90 is .67. The 10th gear in the 10l100 is .63. On the highway it will run lower rpm’s so in theory it should get better mpg.
