UP's Big Boy 4014 giant steam locomotive south of Nevada, Iowa

- Friday, August 2, 2019, 9:29 AM. Union Pacific's Big Boy steam locomotive, number 4014, is the only operating unit of the 25 built that were the biggest of their type in the world. Today is the last day it will be in Central Iowa on it's tour of the midwest. It's seen here appearing from around the curve at Shipley, Iowa and heading for Nevada, Iowa. Notice the thousands of butterflies stirred up as it passes. That's Rick over by the block tower. His video will follow.

I saw UP 4014 a couple of times while it was making its way across Wisconsin...almost makes me wish it was winter to see the full visual effect of that much steam!
Yeah, that would be nice. I wonder if they'll ever run it in the winter?

NIce catch Jim! Were you on the top of that hill at the road crossing to take the telephoto shot of 4014 or were you on the I-35 bridge for the telephoto shot? When I first saw the single track, I was wondering why the 4014 wasw running on a single track when the mainline through Iowa is double track. I had to look at Google Maps to see where Shipley, Iowa was. I found it on the Spine Line south of Nevada, Iowa on the way to Des Moines, Iowa. Des Moines is the next stop for the 4014 then on to Council Bluffs and Omaha. Looking forward to Rick's video. I saw that he backed away from the tracks as the 4014 approached him. I presume he wasn't interested in getting sprayed with steam as the 4014 passed him. With you going back to Florida, how am I going to get my fix of the Union Pacific (nee Chicago & North Western) lines in Iowa. Karen Page seems to have moved to somewhere in Virginia after school in Cedar Rapids. You and Rick and Karen provided the Union Pacific Iowa mainline videos for me.
Thanks Thomas! I was on a grade level crossing at a gravel road called 250th Street southwest of Nevada.. The zoom lens gave the illusion of height in the first clip. The train had left Des Moines headed north on the Spine Line a half-hour to 45 minutes before I took this video. I'm back in Florida now, but Rick and I took some other UP videos in my week-plus in Iowa, so I'll try to make those available in the next few days. I miss the Union Pacific too. I have to start exploring Orlando for the CSX and NS crossings soon, though UP and CNW will always be my favorites.
