    Quick Update:
ZWO did agree to send me a new camera from a UK retailer (365 astronomy). Initially ZWO said they would send one from China once they had received mine, however, they did quickly change their mind. 365 sent the camera out straight away and the camera arrived this week.

Are they just sending the new cameras out with a repair kit for people to do now? Just been waiting patiently but have seen a few that get the cleaning kit and have to remove some extra paste that was causing the issue lately.

    • @RussellsAstrophotography

@@houstonderk I don’t think so, they have now solve the issue so any new cameras shouldn’t have this problem. They’ve also offered a lifetime warranty on any cameras affected by the leaks.

@@RussellsAstrophotography quick question. I'm about to pull the trigger on an ASI2600MC as an upgrade to my legendary 294MC Pro, which I've had for about 4 years now. Would you say it's still worth acquiring the 2600MC now, given your frustration?

You are not the only one who seem to have suffered from that oil leakage trouble with the ZWO 2600. I was in doubt to buy it, but now (because of your vid) just decided not to purchase it.
The little nights with clear skies cannot be put at risk, I just don't want to fight annoying problems on them. Thanks for your video, I hope you didn't had any trouble any more.

Finally they are doing what they should have in the beginning. If you're purchasing such an expensive item you should not to jump throough hurdles in order to contact them nor should you have to screw around with it when it is new. I have been eyeing this camera and/or the color version but if anyone is going to have the oil leak it will be me as well. It is good to hear ZWO has done a second version with different parts and hopefully it this will live up to the expected quality. They are a good company but have been growing a bit too quick recently so they are having their customers be beta testers. - Cheers

Yes, I agree, they have not handled the whole process well. I think they have finally started taking the problem more seriously...however, this is way too late IMO. They should have recalled the cameras straight away and issues a statement saying they are sorry and will replace any that are affected. I have been promised that none of the new models (manufactured this year) will have this issue, so hopefully this gives you some confidence to buy the camera...it truly is a fantastic camera, as long as you don't have an old leaky version. Thanks for watching 👍

I think you have shown remarkable and comendable restraint in your comments about the appalling way ZWO handled their faulty product and the way they treated you.
What angers me most about these situations is not so much that some products are faulty - it happens, no product is perfect - but the way in which a lot of comapanies, in this case ZWO, go into complete denial about their faulty products and often blame the customer. Telling you to 'clean it' was just about the biggest insult insult they could have paid you. Then the way they delayed contacting you and basically treating you with total contempt was really bad.
So full credit to you for the way you have reported this tale of woe and for your dignified and restrained response. I hope you have a fully functioning camrera now and can enjoy what you paid a lot of money for. Shame on you, ZWO!!

Hi Russell, So sorry to hear about another damn oil leak!
Really, it should be 365 Astronomy that should be dealing with this all the way as UK distributor. Hopefully you will get a better oil leak free one. You should really ask for compensation as a "gesture of good will" from ZWO for the inconvenience and the fact that you are losing faith in the product. Tell them you have a few thousand followers on your channel who could be potential purchasers considering you are giving them free advertising for using their products.

I was involved on the Cloudy Nights interaction with ZWO and the multi-camera oil leak problem. If I was you I would think twice about the ZWO eco-system. They were extremely slow to seriously address the thermal pad situation and frankly its my opinion theyre ASI AIR device's inability to not work with true ASCOM compliant products gives me a clear vision of their business desires. In regards to the oil leak issues, they stated that the cameras have a lifetime warranty against the oil leak issue and they should have replaced the camera the first time you mentioned it. If you are saying they did something different than that, oh well, all I can conclude is that they are once again looking out for their own interests.

Hi Russel! I don´t want to disappoint you, but even with the new camera, the problem could not disappear for all. I am working closely with a telescope dealer, here in the Munich area. I am experienced with Peltier technology, and we just discover, that the temperature transfer gap-filler between the back of the image sensor and the Peltier chip (module), which originally contains silicone, is actually not the only issue. There is another reason for this problem: The Peltier chip seats on the camera heatsink. But for a good temp transfer between the Peltier chip and the heatsink, ZWO uses also not a gap-filler, but a thermal paste containing also silicone. When the camera is cooling, depending on the ambient condition at the moment, condensation appears, and the water drops are mixing with this paste, producing leaks, not only on the sensor surface but sometimes on the whole inside camera, being very annoying to clean it all. I have also a solution for this issue, to replace this shit paste with a graphite auto-sticky thermal pad, just 0,25mm thickness. The problem is, this special graphite pad you cannot buy from Europe, it is only made in the USA. Feel free and contact Teleskop Spezialisten ( Mr. Karl Kloss, see their website), but after March 21st, cause they are on holiday right now. They speak EN. You can use my name, tell them I gave you their contact.

Hi….very sorry that you had this trouble…I have not had the oil leaks yet but to tell you, I have not used the heater for dew prevention on the camera sensor as yet which is probably the cause for warming up the “oil” and so making it seep into the sensor window.

Thanks Rob, yes the new ones shouldn't have the issue. It is hard to know if the camera you get is a new one or not, because as far as I am aware there is no list of serial numbers of cameras which have been affected. I do think thought that and camera you buy new today should not have this issue. I can't imagine that any retailer would still have older stock in their inventory as it was a very popular camera as sold very well. I would avoid the second hand market for this model though. Hope this helps.

I had a problem with my Altair 26c ... I phoned, described the problem, they said return it and they would send me a replacement... their turnaround time to get it out was 2 hours... new one delivered the next day. These are expensive bits of gear and you expect good service. Because Altair are a British company and seem to care the whole process was completed within 72 hours from phone call to replacement in hand. The ZWO approach just does not cut it... and it would not be so bad if this was the first time I have heard this type of experience. I had been attracted to the 2600MC for a long time, but seeing the number of recurring problems in a $2000 camera, I decided to buy a cheaper 533MC, with excellent reputation and performance. What is unfortunate in all of this is that ZWO has made only half-hearted efforts to resolve the issue effectively. Meanwhile customers pay with their money or their time for ZWO's quality problems. Although ZWO ends up responding to the customer one way or another, they have continued to bring out a camera whose reputation has been destroyed. A company cannot manage with these poor quality standards. A company depends on its customers and these must be respected. ZWO must change its policy or we customers will get fed up. Competition is already beginning to appear and in a while, if everything continues like this, they will displace ZWO. One should not follow a brand for fanaticism, but for its quality, reliability, customer service, technical service, timely and fast responses.

I think they have finally started dealing with the problem effectively...however, this is way too late IMO. They should have recalled the cameras straight away and issues a statement saying they are sorry and will replace any that are affected. You are right, this is definitely impacting their reputation, I have seen so many comments saying that people are choosing other brands (usually QHY) or different cameras (like your 533) because of these issues. Thankfully, ZWO did agree to send me a new camera from a UK retailer in the end. Initially they said they would send one from China once they had received mine, however, they changed their minds and my camera arrived this week 👍Thanks for watching

This really doesn't look good for ZWO... Honestly support seems really bad for alot of these Chinese manufacturers.. ZWO is a nightmare to deal with, as is William Optics,. I have a redcat that has horrible stars, had a small sensor and didn't really notice till I upgraded cameras, 7 months after I bought it. I had to fight for months to get them to do something, finally they took it to fix it and have had it for almost 3 months... There just seems to be such variation in quality from lots of these telescope manufacturers

Yes, there really is a big difference in the quality of the scopes. Chiv the lazy geek, did a great video about the astro lottery which highlights the issue well. There really should be better QC in place. Thanks for watching

This is really annoying, as I have also had my 2600MC apart twice for the same issue. As I don't have a UA-cam channel, the service has been less stellar. How's the iOptron working out? I'm thinking of the CEM 70 at some point. Does it allow for fully internal cable management if the ASIAir is on the telescope?

    • @RussellsAstrophotography

Really sorry to hear that Brock. To be honest, when I posted on their FB group, they reached out to me very quickly, as they do not want the bad publicity. I would suggest that you do that. I have waited a long time to get a response from their official website in the past. I am loving the CEM60, I haven't used it as much as I had hoped (due to the weather), but so far so good. It is so fluid that balancing takes longer, but I think that this is really good thing and probably shows just how poor my balance was on my old stiff NEQ6 pro. The polar alignment is great and much easier than my other mount, tracking so far has been really good. The internal power system is also great. I have two power cords running from the power outlets below the mounting plates which power my camera and the asiair. Clear skies, and I hope you get your 2600 fixed soon, I know how frustrating it is.

Why is there oil in the camera ? I was just about to buy an ASI 6200MM and this video popped up. What is the oil for? Thermal? All cameras I've ever used are dry with a desiccant of nitrogen purged.

Following this failed repair by the dealer, ZWO have made a decision now that all in warranty cameras will be replaced by HQ and not leave the repairs in the hands of individual dealers. This will ensure all customers avoid this situation in future. Previously customers had the option to get this done via dealer and to date Russell's was the only one we have had where the repair was not successful by dealer. Only a certain batch of cameras had the incorrect component fitted and all stock from ZWO was rechecked and certified as correct. I can tell you that ZWO have taken the issue seriously internally and anyone with an in warranty 2600 with the issue will get a replacement.

    • @RussellsAstrophotography

It is great to know that they are taking this seriously, do you work for/with ZWO? They were very quick to reach out to me and solve the issue when I posted to their FB. I hope they take all cases this seriously and respond just as quickly and that the other cameras which have had the repair do not suffer from this issue. I wish they had offered a replacement straight away rather than asking me to clean the sensor, then asking me to send it to get repaired and then finally offering a replacement.

@@RussellsAstrophotography I am an official member of the ZWO team yup :) We would be just as quick if you raised a support ticket - ZWO have made some major changes to their support structure ... TJ Connolly and I are now driving the support desk and are in direct contact with the internal teams to expedite tickets - I think its safe to say after some internal discussion and feedback from TJ and I, that the ZWO approach to this issue has changed significantly for the better - the ZWO team are determined to improve service around repairs - they have new local service centres in Europe Japan and the USA to assist. TJ and I are also consulting to them on lots of other aspects from logistics, product design and development. In particular we have focused heavily in the last months on ASIAIR testing and development. Slow and surely we will improve things and ZWO are VERY responsive to what we have suggested.

Will you do a follow-up detailing how you can distinguish between and old leaky version and a new shiney not leakey version? Dunno about old inventory kicking around all the various retail outlets but who would want to take their chances with a camera costing an arm and a leg

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  2 роки тому

Unfortunately, I don't think there is any official list of cameras (or serial numbers) that might be affected, or any visual way to tell if the camera is new or old. I really do think any which are purchased new from retailers now should be fine, as I would imagine that these would all be new stock. I guess you could always ask the retailers if/when the camera was manufactured. I would definitely avoid the second hand market for this camera though. Sorry I couldn't give you more of a definitive answer, I guess you will have to trust the retailer you buy from. I hope this helps, thanks for watching

I read somewhere this issue happens when either the 1600mm pro and 2600mm pro shouldnt be cooled below -10 C. Not sure why that should make a difference, but I have never cooled below -10 on both and have never had an issue...fingers crossed it stays that way. My 2600 is a year old and my 1600 is three years old
