I came across a broken hand chainsaw at the 1 dollar thrift bin. it has cutters on both sides of the chain and they alternate in cutting direction back and forth every two cutters. In between each cutter is a one sided lifter with no cutter that has one side alternating in protruding up ad down along the chain. They are all joined by double ended rivets that have a "washer" area of expanded diameter milled in the middle that holds apart the wings of the cutting and the lifting links. The washer is immovable in the center along the shaft of the double ended rivet. This means that it cant be pounded thru the other side of the link ... so the only way to get the flat figure 8 joiner link out is to file off one side and bend the wing off the rivot. Once the joiner is in place on the middle expansion one may flatten the wing back onto the rivot and peen it if there is any thing left to peen. There wasn much left to peen but the hand chainsaw is working fine and it''s ready to hook on to the lons sawing ropes and pull it up over that tree limb that way up there.

Are the tie straps aleays on the same side?
With the presets always on the opposite side?
Does it matter whoch side you grind the rivet off of?
The 2 ive broke so far. Seems to have the strap link on the body side of the chain if it was being ran. With the preset on the outside away from the operator. Is this always the case?

Good video. Some chains the master links are not available, I'm told that links can be punched without grinding and then reused? These are mini 1/4" chains.

@@ChainsawUsers Thanks, tried and it works. I don't have one of those anvil or chain vices so instead I used my bench vice with the chain held vertically at one end, works but not ideal. Ordered one of those adjustable anvils for next time.
