This is what they do in Europe. I experienced it first hand. Horrible accident with multiple flipped cars. The cops made a path through someone's yard to a side street, through a village and back onto the freeway just behind the accident. Total time 15 minute wait.
It's not about a path. It's about the highly toxic chemicals from the lithium batteries. This container is a toxic fire bomb ready to go off. They have to approach this very carefully, or this situation can go from bad to worse in no time flat.
I do agree that they need to get those people off of that freeway ASAP though! They should set up a temporary pass lane (until the backed up traffic is cleared out on the opposite side of the freeway to get those vehicles moving while completely shutting down and diverting traffic at the nearest convenient exit before the wreck. Once clear of backed up traffic, then return the other side to normal and focus on the situation at hand.

@@Metal0sopherin my area of Canada a logging truck took out an old bridge, closing off the only east west route for hundreds of kilometres. The army came in, built a Bailey bridge and temporary road in a couple of days. I'm sure the U.S Army Corps of Engineers would have no issues.
I would not sit on the freeway for eight hours in that kind of heat. I would figure out a way to turn around and go back against traffic even if the CHP doesn't like it.

They have to turn back at this point. CHP should use the 15North entrance as exit for drivers to go back south. Fire danger with all those cars stationary and Cajon heat is serious.

Isn't there a way to use the southbound lanes, which are open, to allow northbound traffic to get around the accident site? Maybe alternate southbound and northbound traffic on those lanes, the same way when a road becomes constrained to a single lane due to construction or an accident.

Old timers, like me, would take the 126 Hyw on the Old Spanish Trail from Baker, going north and hook a right into Nevada. Its a longer drive, but hey, it will get you into Vegas faster than waiting for hours in the hot sun on I-15.
The average person today does not know how to read or use a map. I started with a topographical map in the early 1970's and then a road map/atlas in 1991. Although I'm retired I still have the last Truckers Atlas I bought.

Umm, my map shows that as hwy 127 instead of 126...but it is also shown as okay for 18 wheelers...

So you’re telling me they haven’t built any side access roads on the side of the freeways what exactly does the California Department of transportation do I mean there’s been such a lack of road built in the past 20 years it’s unbelievable. They have done such poor job building anythingbasically anybody and management Caltrans is making like 200,000 a year even holding a sign on the side of the road has to get prevailing wage they make about $80 an hour with their benefits

Always, always bring at least water and snacks if going on a road trip. We pack a cooler with food and water and fill the tank if going out of a major metro. A four hour drive can easily double if an accident/closure happens.

Are people really that desperate to get to Las Vegas? I have been in this situation before due to snow on I-80, two hours after I left home I was back home and made my apologies. The hotel in Reno was fine about shifting my reservation two weeks. Why didn't people just turn around through the "official use only" connectors that are all along I-15? Nobody is going to ticket you when the road east is closed. They'll be happy to have you out of the way.

Lithium batteries don't do well in extreme heat or cold...

The batteries are small packs used for drones. Tesla packs all their Fremont cells in-house and nobody else is making EVs in Cali. Lots of drones and RCs but not cars. Regardless of drivetrain unless you have at least 6-8 inches of clearance and decent tires you're not doing any detour off that road. Just sit and take it.

My family and I were going to Las Vegas today and when we were at the I-15 we saw all the traffic and stayed there for a bit then decided there was no use in staying so we turned around. We can not believe that they also closed 40!! We are next going to Vegas when the freeway opens

@@panchaabel I-40 west wouldn't do them any good as it ends right there near barstow. they close I-40 east because there are no roads off the I-40/RT 66 corridor that can handle bypass traffic from northbound I-15. you would encounter bumper-to-bumper traffic ALL THE WAY up to henderson on RT 95.

In the mid 1970s I often drove from Edwards AFB (near Lancaster, CA), where I was stationed, to Denver, Colorado to see my fiancé. I'd catch I-15 at Barstow and take it all the to central Utah where I'd pick up I-70.
Loved that stretch, but I always drove it at night when there was less traffic and, in summer, none of the heat from the day. I'd put in my favorite 8-tracks and just cruise. So peaceful. Usually stop at Denny's on The Strip in Vegas for a late dinner, and then drive straight through to Denver. Good times!

that won't work when I-15 is shut down completely- none of those roads can handle bypass traffic. thats why I-40 east was closed, as well. someone suggested diversion to 15S- only problem is 15S doesn't exist. i think the blockage was just south of halloran summit road. if you can't get to halloran or cima- you can't get to kelso or kelbaker rd.
Vegas is paving their freeways this here just added to the traffic nightmare people should have known better than to travel this weekend. The I 15 is getting paved from blue Diamond to flamingo so it’s a double wammie.
And the las vegas, nv metro/greater metro KEEPS GROWING. Look at places like primm nv, mesquite, nv, henderson, nv, paradise, nv, etc; anything even remotely near las vegas, nv JUST KEEPS GROWING!!

I-40 was horrible. It took us 5 hours to travel 50 miles. There were time people would get out to stretch because we would be sitting in one spot for half an hour. Never taking the i-40 again.
Really looking forward to the rail line they're building. I hope that project doesn't fail
its beginning to look like it won't happen unless they can build a separate right-of-way in certain areas. too bad no one thought of planning for it when I-15 was built.
All highways need to have a emergency u turn lane. Set up some temp lights to control traffic or invest in covering the highway with solar would cool to see.

I was in this. I'm sorry for everyone who wasn't able to get around taking the dirt service roads. It took 2 others and myself 3 hrs to get around. Unfortunately it wasn't a road a car or a small suv could get by.

if you have a car that gets good mileage its about $40 worth of fuel each way- its cheaper + you have a car when you get there. your price does not include rental cars which are close to $100/day.

We were on the worst traffic-jam we encountered in our 30+years driving experience. Stuck on route 66 & i40 for 12 hours! No restaurants, gas stations. Truck drivers fighting. It was one big horrific mess.
well that corridor goes from barstow to springfield mo. and there are some very remote areas. it seems like the traffic jams nearly always happen in those remote places.
Good thing California has a 55mph speed limit for tractor trailers. It helps so much...

I wasn't there but I have been trapped on 395 North waiting for them to clear an accident and was told it would be a couple hours🤯 I have a four-wheel drive truck so I simply turned right off the highway and drove through the desert maneuvering through the sagebrush about half a mile then went North about a mile and a half then went left and hooked back up on the 395 North about a quarter mile in front of where the accident was.. took about 20 minutes

some people actually have a home in vegas and when THEY vacation they go to san diego where its beautiful (70-80 degrees) and friends, family , or a home where they can stay. thats why the heck they do it.
😓I feel for everybody affected by this situation and pray they eventually got out of it safely, makin it to their destinations. This is why I’ve always believed 18wheelers and all industrial and construction type vehicles, vehicles over 3000-5000lbs, should have their own particular roads on which to travel. It would be safer and less time consuming for average vehicles. One would think they’d have come up with the plans to do so by now considering all the construction constantly taking place out there🤦🏾♀️

It was a nightmare, we ran out of gas on a road with no reception. The closest gas station was 40 miles away. We had to get a hotel for the night, the next day it took us 7hrs to get to our car

when i commuted back in the 90's- i would stop at the am-pm and get the soft-serve from their machine- but they took it out after people got sick. now i don't even get off at baker-there's an in-n-out at the lenwood/barstow exit and their food is always awesome. i think theres 3 in-n-outs in vegas. i used to eat at the one on south decatur when i lived there.

One just opened in my town in Oregon about a year ago, still the best fast food 🍔 . What great times those drives up to Vegas always were. Fear and loathing movie comes to mind. 👻
