    I have always struggled with my driver so I used an old trusty Callaway 3 wood off the tee which was accurate but a tad short in terms of distance . I just came across this mini driver and was instantly intrigued so I tested the 11.5 deg version and bought it and so far it has not disappointed. The one positive in addition to the pieces you covered that I feel is worth highlighting is the sound. Its really satisfying and definitely more enjoyable than my G410 driver. There are a lot of people out there who should put their ego aside and consider this piece of equipment.

    I recently had the same experience. fitted for a standard driver that just didn't work for me. I came across the new Taylormade mini, hit it at a demo day and put it straight into the bag for all the same reasons. Smaller head, easy to control, it's still long off the tee and looks fantastic....

    Really one of the BEST TM releases overall in years! With two different standard lost models to choose from, you can use the 11.5 and loft it right down to 9.5 or 10.5 as a regular driver. Or go up to 13.5° and use it as a strong Three-wood. Then the 13.5° model can go down to 11.5 or up to 15.5° which is almost like a 4-wood. Or go 14.5 like a basic 3 wood replacement but bigger head for off the tee confidence. Then add in the moveable weights for either lower or higher trajectory and an absolute beautiful styling… That’s why when they first came out I ordered mine right away. I haven’t even got the plastic off the head I just sit and look at it lol. Our golf season in Canada just began 5 days ago, been out once so far and am waiting to get my swing and tempo stabilized before I try a brand new different club such as this. It’s a jewel! Put it in the bag Andy… I think it’s a real winner here. Enjoy it and have a great season

    I received mine as a gift and it hasn't left my bag since. I turned it up to 15 degrees and it has become my 190 yd off the deck 3 wood replacement. My slower swing speed doesn't get a three wood or 5 wood past 160. The burner goes 190 -200 off a tee and 180-190 off the deck. I even tee it up a little higher on the 180 par 3s and drop it on the green. Vey versatile for sure!

    Picked a used one up from Golfbidder yesterday and I have never hit a golf club so well
    11.5* cranked up to 12* regular shaft, pierces through the wind like nothing I've ever used and goes pretty much the same distance as my driver but straight. I play on a course on the South Downs so it is perfect for the wind and the chalk fairways
    I cannot recommend it enough
    My Titleist TSR driver is going to be sold and all those who will take the mick will be hitting theirs and then walking up to mine !!

      You have the right idea, in my opinion. I chased distance for a long time. Then I decided that for my game it was better to find the fairway than be searching the rough for errant tee shots (or re-teeing!) As a result my handicap started dropping fairly quickly. The lesson for me was accuracy trumps distance… at least for my game. I do wish I could bomb it accurately but I’m having more fun playing from the short grass. You have to find your own way in this crazy game. Good luck!

    I bought it. I love it. The added control and shorter shaft allow me to confidently swing full and I'm getting just as much distance on a good shot and hitting more fairways. If you love woods, but struggle with driver, this is the one.

    3rd season golfer, I only got my first one hour lesson with a pro in march and he helped with my irons.
    I struggle with the driver and am not using it at the time.
    I use my 3 wood off the tee and place it in the fairway efficiently at round 220 yards average.
    This is intriguing, until I get a driver lesson.
    Just for everyone saying it's a useless club.

    Been playing the original one mini for the past 2 years as my driver. its a bit of a frankenstein club since im playing a 1k orange pro 50tx driver shaft with a lower launch since i can only crank it down to 9.5. I've tried to go back to standard drivers since thats the norm(5 in total), but the mini driver goes nearly as far with the full length shaft(if i could get a lower loft it would be the same), and the misses on compared to normal driver heads are just way more manageable. It feels quite a bit heavier compared to a standard driver with the full length shaft, but i am actually a fan of it. I don' t think i can go back to a normal driver now, i just wish i they made them in lower lofts so i could play them at 7.5 or 8.

    For any of you younger folk wondering about the "reversibility" of the head cover - when the copper-colored Burner Bubbles came out in 1996, the inside of the head covers was a striped fleece material. And it seemed like no two head covers had the same insides. So, for whatever reason, we turned the head covers inside-out and used them that way.
    Considering that TaylorMade never even mentioned that the head covers were reversible way back then, it's a really nice Easter Egg, and I'm glad they went out of their way to make it happen.

    I bought the 13.5 degree version of this club last week. It’s great for a mid to high handicapper like me. Been playing last years 300mini and the amount of fairways I hit per round has probably doubled, also it doesn't have much of a yardage dropoff as I hit the center of the club alot more than my regular driver. Pairs great with a 5 wood as your next longest club.

      I like this concept and appreciate your comment. I don’t have a very high swing speed (not for lack of trying!) but I’ve noticed that when I swing a stiff shafted driver, and a low spin version at that, I drive the ball consistently straight and it often runs like crazy. This would not be the typical driver setup most would think would work for me based on my lack of club head speed. But it works. Stiff shafts don’t just work for the guys with high club head speed.

  • @simon1841
    @simon1841 Рік тому

    Very interesting Andy, I have been interested in driver shaft length for better control for some time, and have seen a number of videos on UA-cam where people have tested both shorter shaft lengths for conventional drivers and have also tested the various Taylormade and Callaway mini-drivers, all with favourable reviews. I think it was Tom Wishon who said that unless you have a swing speed of around 100 mph, an in to out swing path, and are able to control the club face, you have no business playing a 46 inch driver shaft. So why do manufacturrs have stock 46 inch drivers? I think it's for 2 reasons: Distance sells, and so we're encouraged to have a longer shaft than we average golfers (15 Handicap for me) can use effectively, and also, shelf appeal - if you're looking along a row of drivers in the shop, you're not going to grab the one that's shorter than the rest with a smaller head. And, third, perhaps, our own ego. I think that many Tour pros use shafts of between 44 and 45 inches, so the whole 46 inch thing is actually a disservice to us casual golfers, especially given the price of new drivers. Oh, and just cutting down a stock shaft isn't a good idea as it affects the swing weight and you have to add weight to the club head to compensate - but try finding a proper shorter shaft to buy, as I have, and it's hard. Anyway, longtime fan and keep up the good work.

    An alternative that could be worth considering is the Taylormade M1 from 2016 and 2017. It was also offered in a 440cc size (vs 460), is fully adjustable, and is plenty long (I have the 2017 version). Resale clubs are still available, can save $$$ vs new.

    • @dmkfactor1721
      @dmkfactor1721 Рік тому

      I think one of the biggest reasons why players would be more successful with these mini drivers is the loft and the length of the shaft. Lots of golfers struggle to launch 9 and 10 degree drivers for various reasons be it swing speed, not being able to hit up, or just not playing enough to get good enough to hit the center of the face. Whatever the reason these work well for those players. Length in what I’ve seen is one of the biggest issues! Those near 46” driver shafts aren’t easy to square up! I have a PXG Gen 5 driver and it’s 45 inches and I gained 30 yards over my M6!

    It's not "almost like" a strong 3W, it IS a strong 3W. I played a Adams fairway for along time that was called a 3+ and it had, you might guess, 13.5 degrees. That said, it had a fairway wood sized head, which was much smaller than the Burner Mini, and it had shaft that was likely a bit shorter than the Burner Mini. I loved that club as a driver alternative, but as I got better with my fairway woods, it no longer really fit in the bag and I went back to a standard 3W and Driver. Though I like the idea of a shorter shaft for control and more loft and slightly bigger head for forgiveness, I'd worry that it still just wouldn't fill a need in my bag.

    One Of my buddies off 15 has one of these, and is pretty much in the fairway with every shot. I’m not bothered about hitting it 350 yards being a bit older. I don’t have the strength to do that anymore. I just want something that will find the fairway at around 275 and I’m a happy chap. Some how I bought the mini driver 11.5 and some how I add a ventus tr red 5 shaft stiff and I love the ball flight one ball I hit was a 290 to 295 carry and stops in the mud, would think about taking my 3 wood out and put a extra wedge.

    I continued to play my smaller cc driver from the 90s until 2015 because I didn't have enough disposable income to buy the larger CC drivers at the time. I still think 460cc drivers are comically too large. I wished the R&A and USGA rolled back the driver volume rather than the golf ball.

    "R-sole" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
    I'm sure that for some golfers who struggle with their driving the mini driver will be a useful option.
    However, I can't help seeing the irony that TM (who have been pushing "Bigger heads" for more forgiveness and longer shaft length for more driver distance, not to mention their carbon face) should suddenly launch a shorter, smaller driver than is ALL titanium. Surely, someone must be asking the question, "If Stealth2 is that good, why do we now need the BRNR"?????
    Or is it just me????

    Got mine last week, been to the range with it and the course. I bought the 11.5 degree with a stiff shaft only problem im finding is fitting it into my bag, due to the fact my ping g425 max 5 wood( known as the beast) goes further than it. Might just use it as a fairway finder on tight course and stick with my epic flash for the longer courses as im finding a massive difference in distance compared to the burner. Or keep it mint and sell it for double the price in yrs to come coz it is stunning

    Andy - like the iron analogy. I often hit my 7 iron further and more consistent than my 5 iron.
    Do you feel like you can go at it more work the shorter shaft as you have more control? Just thinking if get more club/ball speed that would offset any driver distance gapping.

    I've got a serious question about the mini driver also! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE NUMBER 2? Can I be the only person who remembers (fondly) the 2 wood? Lets review, size between a driver and 3 wood, loft between driver and 3 wood, shaft length between driver and 3 wood. What do you have?

    I do love these many drivers from TaylorMade. However, the question on everyone's minds is what is my distance drop off? Please go out and buy a GPS unit so you can measure off your drives with a driver versus the mini driver. Or when you are reviewing irons and you are not in a simulator, it would be nice to know how far your 7-iron goes. I think the statistics and some distances are the one thing holding back your reviews.

    No it is not. It is nothing more than a rebranded (and made with modern materials) old style 2 wood.

    Great review, Andy. I'm wondering if you tested the regular flex. You and I are close to the same age (and probably swing speed? I'm 96 mph), and I felt good with the regular flex when I tested it yesterday, but the salesperson persuaded me to order stiff flex. I'm wondering if I should cancel the special order and stick with regular flex since it felt great and I hit it well. Either way, I'm getting the 11.5° loft as this will replace my driver.

    • @twang96

    • @merchantbankers
      @merchantbankers 8 місяців тому

      I did cancel that order and got the regular flex. The more I read up on it, the more clear it seemed that I was at the absolute minimum swing speed to justify stiff flex, and since I'm 56 years old, it's unlikely that my swing speed will be going up.
      I'm very happy with the regular flex, and it definitely feels right for me.@@twang96
