Pocket playing is essential.
Pocket playing is a grounding mechanism that allows all the other musical pieces to sit properly in the ears of the listener. It is vital and critical for every drummer to develop that skill.
I like to live in pockets. Check out the Fearless Flyers Pockets so deep you might get lost. Their Madison Square Garden video is epic

Aaron the drummer was largely responsible for all the set-up and production of the video work-multi talented on so many levels. Love your reactions. Informed, funny, enthusiastic and the replays are great. A) some things deserve more than one take and B) when you replay stuff you always handle in a very engaging fashion. Great work on so many levels. You deserve-and I'm guessing you'll end up with so many more subscriptions than you currently have. C'mon people support the good stuff!
I've been patiently waiting for some new music to hit the scene for a long time, and I just recently discovered Dirty Loops. They are on another level, almost from another dimension. I can't get enough of them. I get in my car and all I'm listening to is Dirty Loops. Such amazing, talented musicians. And from their interview with Rick Beato, they're really humble and sweet guys. I've never seen a band have so much fun performing together.
The Musical knowledge/ Talent of the Trombone player who writes all of what your listening too is so Freaking out there. Genius
Also: Cory Wong has a podcast and Henrik was a guest once. Before the actual interview, Cory said that he and Aron talked about how they'd do the videos. They got real specific with heights and measurements and stuff. Aron sent Cory a picture of what DL'S set would look like. So Cory rented the same type of lights DLs had been using in previous videos, got the same type of camera, and got a similar type of rug. All conversations, making the album, and doing the videos was all done virtually.

Cory Wong's band is really, really great. If you ever get a chance, you should watch his Paisley Park session. Some of the same members in these videos are in that session and some others. It's really entertaining.
Tony, thanks for doing the reaction to Turbo. You have a great ear and pick things out that I didn't notice even after listening to these songs repeatedly over the past 6 months. I think you're going to dig Rings of Saturn. Totally not a typical Dirty Loops vibe but awesome in a whole different way. You will also get a nice surprise from the insane sax soloist from Turbo.

As much as I think that all the guys in Dirty Loops are some of the greatest musicians in the World, that horn section is like Duke Ellington had a baby with Tower of Power! Awesome!

I’m guessing that Michael Nelson (trombone) wrote the horn arrangements on this one. It’s just dope, what can you say…
What’s happening in that horn B section, from what I’m hearing, is syncopated beats in the trumpets over 16th runs in the saxes etc., over a IV7, -a guess only.
The articulation is nuts too…
This track, for me has Cory Wong written all over it (check out his “Jet Screamer”).
Someone mentioned that some of those tracks on Turbo were more written by Cory, others more by the Loops.
But again, it’s just a guess.
Re that visual set-up: apparently both bands went through great lengths to get the same carpets, lighting style (also height of lamps etc.) and camera setups, to achieve a coherent look. Pretty crazy and funny 😆
Man, and those solos, Henrik’s and Kenni Holmen’s! So jazzy and so funky!

The fourth number from this album which has a video is “Ring of Saturn”, very different to all the other ones.
Btw, I just love how you point out all these things I’ve certainly never heard, like that percussion in the breakdown, how the bass goes down to make way for other instrumental features, and so much more.
It gives me even more respect for these dudes, their music writing and arranging skills and their ensemble playing, dang!

Speaking as a vfx artist, they probably had the whole room setup (with all lights and all rugs) for both shoots, it'd make it much easier to set up shots and have lighting be consistent for both halves. A lilttle roto in the wide shots to have the shadows spill to the other side.
That makes sense
There's a video on YT where they discuss the process.. Same lighting, setup, cameras and angles to make the base material as similar as possible. Obviously the tune is pre recorded during the shoot so they can focus entirely on the video part and they can get "reactions" to each other as they know what's there/coming in advance. Nothing wrong with that clearly as it makes for a better final product.
@@blazemonger1 Are you telling me that they recorded that bass solo, and then he mimed it for the video? With all those triplets or 5 tuplets or whatever?
@@lorraineb682 no. Each half is their performance. DL laid down the rhythm section first while filming. Then Cory and crew would later record and film their parts along to the DL parts

On top he often comes up with the DL songs, or parts of them, and also with the lyrics, at least the sound and the gist of them ;)
He’ll make up nonsense lyrics and give them to Jonah, telling him to change them but to keep the ‘sound’ of them, especially of the end syllables.
He’s even told Henrik once what riff to play, a hideously difficult thing. When Henrik said: “na man, can’t do this one!” Aron just said: “yeah you can, just go and practice it.” 🤣
Man, -Aron’s got everything, not just the best snare sound ever 😆👍

No one who’s reacted/reviewed Turbo has commented on Jonah’s keyboard work, specifically the shots of him playing what looks to be exactly what the horn section is playing……note for note!
I saw it. Seemed pretty obvious it was a unison lick and honestly not super demanding as it's keyboard. The really impressive part are the horns as the demand to do that lick is much greater. That's why I didn't bring it up

@@alcraig1 Thanks. The process for each song on this album was different. In this case, I got a final guitar/bass/drum track, including the bass solo and the intro/ending lick and no other melodic content. Jonah added the organ after we tracked the horns.
I have to agree with you on the editing of this video. Hats off to Aaron, who is the editor-in-chief of all their videos. Along with Simon Petren. If you look closely at the carpets, they are slightly different, and placed at different angles. I'm stumped at how they got the shadow work in there. And that's not to mention the overlap of the lights. I've tried really hard to find the separation line, and I Just Can't. My wife and I went to see Rick Braun and Boney James a while back and it started with Rick, then Boney, then the 2 of them together. Awesome! Wouldn't you love a concert with Cory and the Wong Notes , and Dirty Loops done the same way? Ohhhh..... baby! These cats have made a complete fanboy out of this 74 year old!!
P.S. Music is difficult to listen to without Good pocket. Just sayin.
Now to completely finish melting your brain: According to a very recent interview that another YT drummer reactor did with Henrik: *Aron writes **_all_** the bass parts.*
If you really like the horn section look them up, they are Hornheads. The blue hair Asian girl is Grace Kelly she is very good look her up.
Everything is amazing, but as a former trumpet player, the horn work here is absolutely spectacular. No WAY I could have handled those brass riffs, even at my very best. I really appreciate YOUR appreciation and analysis! Great reaction!

Watching this superb reaction video to a superb tune again, I’m again struck by the amount of percussion going on in the background… I searched everywhere for a credit to a percussionist, but found none. Either Aron is recording it himself, or Dirty Loops use their percussionist Andrea Ekstedt to provide that delicious percussive background landscape.
It adds so much-.
And having a background on Latin percussion, Andreas brings that feel to so many of their tunes.

Also, Henrik’s solo and his insane use of rhythm: it strikes me that he calls it his weaker area…
He’s definitely done the work there 🔥☠️🔥

You should really chack out the fearless flyers, Cory, Mark Letieri, Joe Dart and Nate Smith. Low Volume funk at its best. Anything from their Madison Square garden show would suffice.
It's so good it hurts. This immediately made me think it should be on the Cowboy Bebop OST. Josh Eppard, the drummer from Coheed and Cambria just put out a few playthrough videos. I feel like he gets overlooked a lot, I'd love to see your take on his playthrough of Love Murder One!
I have loved your Dirty Loops reactions, and am impatiently waiting for this one to premiere (~12 hours to go …). While I am waiting, I will throw out a request. Please react to Cory Wong’s latest: Jet Screamer, ua-cam.com/video/QSYcXFfotCk/v-deo.html, released about 8 days ago. I think you’ll like it. I haven’t been able to stop watching it. The horn section is insane.
You need to have a look at their “Baby” by Justin bieber. It’s one of the first tracks on YT. It’s amazing.
The videos are carefully cropped to hide the seam, and then they masterly color grade each so that all the color tones, hi-lites, etc. all match between the two halves. Aron shows up in credits for the video editing often... so he knows his way around a video editing suite, possibly like Davinci Resolve, which has a FREE version with all its color grading capabilities, and has been used for movies like Fast & Furious... Resolve became famous for its ease of color grading with its tools and should get a look for your videos. Tons of tutorials on YT.

Could you do a video analyzing all metal gear rising boss themes? They are great. When you look up mgr all boss themes the first thing that shows up should be a 20 or so minute video with all the songs in order and it even has lyrics on the screen

He is playing that back beat perfectly in time. We have those strong set of basic rhythms on the snare and bass drum keeping it funky sounding and holding the band SOLIDLY in time. 'In the pocket'
