The reality is, people with kids (and I am one of them) MUST control them and realize that the experience isn't for them and them alone. It drives me batshit crazy when my kid is acting right, but people who have come with us are letting their kids absolutely ravage the brewery we are at. If you can't control the herd, don't walk them out to the pasture until you can, man.

Couldn't agree more! We (my family) stopped doing things with a few other families because of this.

We've got a new spot opening up close by and it's a microbrewery, but the brewery portion is clearly not the main focus. It's your typical restaurant, hang out space, pickle ball, with craft beers. I am stoked, and I love the direction the industry is taking because many places need just that! Outside of big cities, most towns don't have "fun stuff" to do for young adults so I feel like this really fills a need.

As a dad with an 8-year-old son, I can see both sides of this. There are breweries where kids and dogs should not be allowed - where the facility is just not set up to handle them. Rhinegeist in OTR Cincinnati comes to mind. Small brewpubs, too. They should be 18 and up.
But I also was just at 50 West in Cincinnati with my wife and son last weekend, and, as a parent, I thought it was a great experience. They have pickle ball courts for rent, beach volleyball courts (converted to a space for picnic tables and fire pits on the weekends), corn hole (of course) and tons of indoor and outdoor tables. The beer and burgers are good. Not hype-worthy, but straight-up solid.
The pickle ball courts hosted an impromptu soccer game with kids who just came from their own soccer game. Other kids ran around and played in the sand, but they more played with each other than caused problems. My son met a kid and started throwing a football around with him. It wasn't an issue because the space is enormous and they have more chill spots for non-parents to avoid the kids. (The overall space is larger than New Belgium in Asheville.)
So I think you're right - the future of local breweries is both of these. I don't see anything wrong with either. They both satisfy a demand. I'd patronize both, depending on the day.

Successful breweries here in Michigan have great beer, outdoor beer gardens, and good food. I feel the recipe for success is in this order: 1. The Beer has to be good with beers that are your backbone all year round (about 6 of them), mixed with limited releases and seasonal beers, also some beers or ciders to draw in the people that don't necessarily like "flavor", i mean craft beer. 2. The atmosphere is important to bring in a multitude of people, but ultimately, it's the people you go with that make it a good time. 3. Having food available for patrons is also important because of the beer munchies, or maybe it's date with the wife and you wanna go somewhere more adult friendly. I especially like it when a brewery has different food trucks. The one thing I don't like about the food is the $14 pretzel. They taste good, but damn it's pricey. My favorite is when a brewery makes its own pizza.

Been hitting the SoCal micro brew scene since 2007. As a father of 3 now days it is nice being able to hit a spot with the whole fam. Definitely agree that the market is over saturated with people opening breweries who have no business opening a brewery. I have always said if you open a brewery you have to have one of two things ... either AMAZING beer or AMAZING food. Tired of micro breweries popping up with shit beer so finally decided to focus on opening an OG tap room on my own with featured weekly food trucks. Thanks for your content... Definitely used it as a reference as I dial in my receipts.

Great points made by both of you - I definitely (at least here in the northeast) see the vast majority of new places that open in the next 3-5 years going more of the brewpub route and focusing more on the community. Except I hope they don't turn into daycares, that bugs me too in excess.

There's a few breweries that make beer I don't like and I won't go to no matter how cool the restaurant is. We all do want community and connections in a fake social media world. Brewery is one of the best options I've found.

It's a tough call. I've been to breweries that have no food, that have kids or dogs and found that there is no lack of business despite all that. Especially if there is an outdoor area. People eat that shit up. I also agree that the average beer drinker has no idea of what a good beer is. As long as there is a style to fit their needs. PROST.

A local brewery near me has a big ass hill outside and it totally pulls every kid 2-8 years old out there just to run up and down it. Keeps them out of our hair for a bit. On the food part, my wife won’t hit a brewery with food or a food truck so it’s becoming a standard for us.

If they don’t keep the doors open, they stop brewing beer. I’ve never seen a undisciplined dog in a brew Haus so I always like them. I can feel the presence of children but I’ve tuned out their existence to the point I don’t see them. The coping skills come down to being grateful there is more than Coors, Dos Equis, and bud light in a town.

Some very interesting points there. I recently went to SW Atlanta and noticed a lot of the breweries had spaces for kids, but few of them were a hinderence for my enjoyment. Some had outdoor or concert space, some had tables and games. Some had great beer, others not so great. Some checked all the boxes at the same time, so it was easy to see their success. Personally I don’t want to drink around a bunch of screaming kids, but it is good to know that the option exists to visit these places even when you have them. Not all of the fun you had when you are younger has to disappear with kids.

I have noticed that restaurant/brewery are always packed. Where the standard brewery’s have a decent flow of people. Also the ones who are following the seltzer trend is doing good as well.

I'd go to the brewery with a Daycare and Chuck-e-Cheese vibe any day. I'm at that point in my life with the kids! Plus, what's bad about a pizza serving barcade with a place to corral the kids? But I guess only as long as the beer is at least decent...

Had a place called Brewbaker's near where I was working in the late 90s. It was a cool set up. They had a tasting bar.. They had brew set ups you could rent to make your own beer with a brew master there to help you along if you're new. They made and served Pretzel Crust Pizzas. They even threw kids parties where the kids could make and bottle their own sodas. Not sure when they closed down, but they were always busy.

Cheers Braj! I’m at the point in my life where I only get to breweries if my wife and kids are with me. So it’s usually got to be a place that serves food. My kids love touring the breweries as well, they are the future brewers 😂 cheers!!!

I find it ironic that McDonald's was very kid friendly back in the day but now got rid of the playground and is wants to be a cool McCafe. Breweries went in reverse, some places you could not go in if you were under 21 (unless you were the dd) and now they are the family friendly with a playground. Also in NH and VT don't allow bars, you have to be a restaurant to serve drinks. At least up here, I bet that was part of the push to make breweries more kid friendly. I am also a fan of having dog or kid friendly zones and non-dog or kid zones.

Man this is a very relevant topic and the only thing I was disappointed in was that you only spent 7 minutes on it. It can be a day long information session. I live where the population is roughly 250000 in this general urban/suburban/rural area in Wisconsin. We have 10 breweries here. 2 would be considered regional coming up from nothing over the last 10 years for one and 28 years for the first one here. 1 new one just opened with a very different vibe and its so far been packed all weekend. Its a novelty place in a upper middle class area. They had a ton of seed money and they are just getting their feet. Not a place for me right now.
What is frustrating for me is that the bigger ones have forgot their roots and have put the priority on expanding. So much so that they ran out of their biggest seller at their taphouse (IPA) for about 3 weeks however my daughter was able to get it in cans 2.5 hours away. We may be the atypical couple (fortunate that my wife loves IPAs) but we want to sit and be able to have a drink or two in a low key place.
I'm not there for Jimmy Fiddledick and the Pud Pullers Band or a heavy metal mosh pit. Play some tunes, have good conversation around adults who aren't looking to puke Natty Lights down their wranglers. We raised our kids and now we can drink with them but I don't want to go to a daycare to drink either. We have one here like that too. We only really have 3 of the 10 that are places we can go.
I'm also seeing a trend to try and pick every dime out of the customers pocket by still offering a higher abv beer BUT NOT selling it in pints. I'm not going out to have a sip of beer. I am not looking to get plowed either but I can handle a couple bigger beers. The price is a factor but not THE factor. I watched my old place do this exact thing. In the past they would sell you a pint of lets say an 8.5% beer. Now they brewed a new batch and its available ONLY as a 10 ounce pour for the same price as a 16 was. Sorry for the rant but as I said this topic hit home. Adam, please do make that little seven barrel pub just like you said at the end of the video. If I'm close I'm in. If not there are certainly chubby old dudes like me that are going to come in and patronize your place for a long time. Cheers dudes.

Makes me think of high end restaurants, the system they use to balance experience with quality of food is a clear distinction between front of house and the kitchen. Front of house makes the experience great (dogs, daycare etc.), the kitchen focuses on great quality food (beer)

I'm not going to the chucky cheese of craft breweries. Pyramid Brewing had a spot by Safeco field in Seattle that had unreal food. It was top notch eating. But no Chuck and no cheese. Sit your butt down for a really good meal and really good beer. Shame Covid KO'd them.

You’ve gotta make your space a destination or at least somewhere people want to spend their time. I’ve been to plenty of crappy little warehouse breweries that had decent beers, but was I digging the vibe and wanted to hang out? Not usually. Quality of beer matters, but it can’t be the laurels you rest on. If you don’t invest in your space, then just distribute to the local retailers and hope for the best.
I’ve got kids, adults now, who grew up visiting breweries. They would have never been “those kids”, but as a parent I typically always tried to go to places that had things to do or food so they weren’t just spinning on the barstools. I find more often people bringing their dogs than their kids and have run into several instances where I wanted to leave because of barking dogs. Much rather hear kids playing than that.
I think successful breweries in the future will have facilities for families and for singles including food and some sort of recreation or entertainment. You’ve gotta have a multi pronged approach to bring ‘em in and keep them there and keep them coming back. Unless you’re churning out world class beers and people come from far and wide just for that, you’ve gotta diversify.
