Do not book a United Airlines flight operated by Air Canada.
UA and AC are part of the Star alliance, which means they share airline routes, and have different flight numbers for the same flight.
I experienced some painful lessons, and it has happened a 4th time, which means this is their MO amd it will happen to you too. I will explain what happens, so you don't fall into the same trap and scam between UA (United Airlines) and AC (Air Canada).
So, over the Holidays I booked a UA flight for my entire family. I we flew out separately because of school obligations. In addition, my father was sick in the Hospital, so the reason I used UA instead of AC, is because for the exact same flight operated by AC, United allows for exchange credit, whereas AC.. the operator! Doesn't. Use it or lose it.
So upon departure, to get seat assignments, we discovered that even though we had a UA itinerary, AC said we weren't in their system. Luckily we rebooked, but I had to take a connecting flight instead of the fully booked direct.
I thought this was an anomaly, one-time occurrence, so as frustrating as that was, I left it.
Now, my wife and other child were flying out a few days later. I told them bc flight was booked with UA, to call and get seat assignments with AC... SAME thing! not in the system. So, we scrambled, and Chase (my agent) rebooked them as luckily there were still a couple seats.
Now thinking OK we are in the clear...
I suspected something seemed habitual about this.. so I called during the holiday to confirm the return flight...
AND.. UA said our flights were cancelled by AC!!!! What!
AC changed the flight number, which was associated with the separate UA flight number. so it vaporized my flights!!
4 hours of phone calls we finally booked flights back and had to settle on connecting flights because AC sold out the flights.
This is exactly why they do this. They want to collect the money directly and screw over UA and seems UA doesn't care as now they convert you to their own operated flights and keep the full fare collected.
    Total Scam
Also they do this because if you arrive to the airport thinking you'll get your seats there, surpirse!! you don't!
And they don't owe you the $1000 credit or voucher because they messed up in overbooking, a ruling in the US with Secretary of Transportation Pete buttachech.
So with a cancelled flight, you are left high and dry. total scam..
They overbook, and kill and cancel the UA alliance bookings.
So I was fuming, was going to post a video, but instead complained to AC and UA and Chase which fell upon deaf ears.
During this trip.my father was ill, so that's the other reason I went with UA for the exchange in case we had to stay longer.
He pulled through for now, but I had.to help get him in assisted living now. So I booked another UA alliance flight and later had.to cancel it and use my exchange ticket value.
Fast forward 2 months to now.
My father is dying, and the doctor said, fly back now. So on a Saturday, I called Chase to book my credit, almost exact value and I needed the direct flight with... AC.
I did it, got my itinerary, and even called that night back to confirm and called on my 4am drive to the airport to get my seat #.
They said, bc it's AC, that I will have to do it at the airport.
At the ticket counter, with an AC agent, they couldn't find my ticket. I showed them my itinerary and finally they saw a booking but it was not assugned.. They said they got to UA.
At the UA counter they said.. flight was cancelled by AC..and sent me back to AC.
AC said flight is fully booked now sorry...
    OMG.
So now I had to go back to UA, which they gladly rebooted me on a connecting flight thru Houston, which delayed me 5 hours from my original landing.
When your parent has 24 hours to live and their body is shutting down, every hour counts.
Now that this has.happened 3 times to me in the span of 4 months, I realize the scam, and this is happening to other people.
If you complain to them, they don't care. Post your comments here, share your AC disaster story for other to learn and together maybe, we can help.make a change in their unscrupulous ways.
From now on, I will choose other airlines and never book with a partner airline, always book directly with the operator.
And.choose Delta, Spirit, Alaska or other before a AC or UA flight where possible.

On my final recent trip, the one that I got cancelled off the Direct LAX--> YUL (Los Angeles to Montreal) I was re-booked thru Houston by UA, then Houston to Montreal... I learned upon landing in Houston that my father passed while I was in route. So even if I got the direct flight, I would have been too late.
However, I did see the body and was able to say my goodbyes later in the day. I am at peace with it, and was able to visit several times from Xmas until now. But Air Canada didn't make any of the travel pleasurable.
My return flight to LA, was using my Chase points, for the AC direct flight, and that was the only flight that didn't get cancelled... because it was direct with the Air Canada and not with the Star Alliance partner United.
