This is the closest thing to a time machine that we have. I've read all the library of Congress slave narratives, which are truly profound, but hearing her voice... gives me goosebumps. As a white guy from Texas, I'm humbled by her spirit. THIS should be required listening in high schools.. along with reading all the slave narratives in the library of Congress.

    • @shopobjetdart

You're right. Slavery ended in 1865. However, the slaves who were old enough to remember the institution but young enough to live into the twentieth century lived alongside some people who are still alive today. This audio was recorded in 1941. My father was born in 1937 which means some of the elderly folks around him as a boy may have been slaves early in their lives. Sylvester Magee, who is the last known slave to die in America, lived to 1971.

I'd like to say that those days are not over. Slavery is disgusting. We are ALL still in the BIGGEST one...that of debt. Everything others take from the Earth have NO right at all to CHARGE another citizen for that which they receive freely. Using debt to harm another isn't freedom, is it?
Now, if ANY countries should be blamed and charged for slavery & crimes against humanity on a global scale? ENGLAND. THEY used the "Great Expansion" period to HELP AFRICA to spread it. Look up REAL HISTORY...in BOOKS. The AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR was started for 2 reasons: unfair, unrepresented taxes AND England refused to recognize the LIBERTY OF ALL from ARISTOCRATIC tyrants. England sent Irish & African slaves & would not allow their freedom. MANY set them free on their own. DemocRats in the South were LOYALISTS. THEY refused the release as well. Lincoln's Anaconda Plan was nefarious & wrong, BUT it was for the FREEDOM OF ALL.
Now, Affirmative Action Laws, that were LARGELY VOTED IN by DemocRats...in the fine print I'm sure none read: allowance of any country label BEFORE American grants allowance for DEPORTATION should a specific group of peoples become a danger or detriment to polite, organized society. Deportation for ANY specific group of people who label themselves as coming from ANOTHER country, born here or not. Sound like betrayal of the black communities to you? Does to me. DemocRats are teaching YOU to deport yourselves...perk up those HUMAN ears...educate yourself or deserve the fate your specific group of people VOTED FOR.

Frances Roberts, thank you for taking the time to listen to Ms. Laura Smalley's personal account of her experience as a slave in the same spirit that I put this video together in. And I agree that her story is very touching. In addition, her story is a reminder of just how many other uniquely personal stories are untold. That said. I consider Ms. Laura Smalley's story a lesson for us all on the importance of compassion and a lesson on not losing your humanity just because you were on the receiving end of malice and hardship... And it is my opinion, although unpopular, that none of us should feel ashamed of our American history unless we feel that we would repeat the same moral wrongs as all those who have come before us because we have learned nothing. And we should feel ashamed if we are trying to justify the wrongdoings of the past or the wrongdoings of the present in so-called retaliation. That said. This is better than reading about history and it is my hope that Ms. Smalley's compelling voice will serve to mend differences, not increase them... Peace!

Thank you for your reply. You have received the video in the spirit that I posted it in. Laura Smalley is not a slave. Laura Smalley is a woman who experienced slavery for a portion of her life before she was freed. And she is a person who chose to share her experience with us so that we can better appreciate her personal struggle and our own personal freedom. Laura Smalley is the offended. That is to say, she is the victim, not us. We are the students of her life history. What we do with our knowledge is entirely up to our personal character. And you have great character, Kelly Martinez!

+It'smePaula Dvlogs why would you be ashamed of your ancestors...? If this is
The case ALL of us, white black and every race under the sun that ever lived would be ashamed of their ancestors! It was a way of life back then and throughout humanity..... was it right, no... but it is all history. Humanity has evolved and learned that it's not right to own other people... well except in a few other countries including Africa, where there are still 10s of millions of slaves today.. North American slave trade is only another part of history that paved the way and lives of millions and millions of people. Slavery didn't mean slaves "lost their lives," in fact very few slaves lost their lives and many were taken care of and treated decent.... not saying atrocities didn't happen but atrocities have happened all throughout mankind's history!

To have your freedom taken from you, work sun up to sun down, can't learn to read or write, afraid each and every day that your family would be torn apart, or of being whipped to death or sold like cattle....Don't talk or write anymore, you are mad.......

I left the south when I was 18, out of high school, and in the 54 years since I left, I've only been back about 3 times, as far as I'm concerned, it will never change. I can remember in the 1980s while in college being introduced to the Library of Congress by my mother. I received my card and could not wait to go here and learn about The field recordings of The Lomax project. My Mother knew but did not tell me, once I heard the Slave Narratives my life would be changed forever. It took another two years of going there from time to time but I did finally hear the music I was lead there for. The thing that shook me to the core most was the details in which these people spoke of, how almost family like these people actually were to their owners. I was young and angry each time I left after sitting and listening. Not once fearing this could change me in a very harmful way but I prayed on it and kept going back for small doses of anger until it turned into inspiration. The inspiration provided me the fuel to not harbor any more hatred of white people and to finish my education in their name. I did and I had no regrets but god have mercy on the souls of the people who endured such horrific treatment from the very group of white people the Moors ruled over and dominated for so many years in Europe. The Moors even taught these Europeans how to read and how not to dwell in the same building the livestock were living to prevent smallpox and measles. Even translated the Bibel to them and taught them to read and write Latin. That is when it hit me: Perhaps this is why white people mistreated us so badly and with such hostility. Look at where we are now in 2018 I struggle to call it progress even though it is but whatever it is people like Laura Smalley should never ever be forgotten or dismissed for these are the true American Patriots and the Creators of our current economy.

Being upset and/or irritated should motivate you to dismiss their claims with information that you have taken the time to produce. Who were the three largest slave traders? .Thank you for your feedback! And I completely agree with you. I found the audio among the archives of the Library of Congress. I downloaded it and added visual aids. I am happy you took the time to listen to Laura Smalley share some of her life experiences. Of course, there is so much more to her story than what she was willing and/or able to share. But if you listen carefully, you'll realize that although she may have been through some of the most horrific experiences known to humanity by our standards, she was aware and grateful that her life could have been far more miserable in comparison to other former slaves. All the same, she was critical of her former masters but she was not broken nor dishearted. And you can gather from her criticism of some of her own people that she would not be on board with the way our community is glorified and promoted in mass and on social media. Despite what she had experienced, she had a moral compass that truer than compass many of us use today. From what I gather, Ms. Smalley wasn't one to bite her tongue. She told the truth as she saw it. And she wasn't about a whole lot of foolishness.

Thank you for taking the time to watch it and for receiving this historical recording in the same spirit it was posted... Many have preconceived notions about the life experiences of the millions of slaves who were subject to the institution of slavery. And so, they just dismiss the individual perspectives of these people for the popular narratives and political agendas of today... Ms. Smalley's interview reveals so much more. First, she has a surprisingly high command of the English language; higher than some folks today, even though it is a Southern dialect. And though she is elderly, she is very much in the moment. She answers questions directly and is honest and forthright about her view of her former acquaintances - White and Black. She reveals a hierarchy of care and authority and the physical and often brutal nature of retaliation and punishment. And she wasn't hesitant to recount the violence set upon Blacks by Whites and Blacks. She doesn't turn a blind eye to any of the misfortunes, exploitation, and atrocities.

These stories are priceless and I could listen to this forever. This is real entertainment for me, true stories of our History.

As painful as this is to listen to, I needed to hear. And just think they use to nurse from a black woman . wow because their mamma's were to lazy and vain. how about that?

I can't imagine breast feeding the children from a people that dehumanized and murdered at random and with impunity, a people that committed unspeakable atrocities. It's monstrous! It's mind boggling. And we're mocked and told to forget about it. No other people are told to forget their history. Even God said to remember the days of old (Deuteronomy 32:7), and He separated the people (Deuteronomy 32:8). Christinsanity has mentally destroyed our people. No one wants to believe (Isaiah 14:21, Jeremiah 30:17, Isaiah 14:1-5, Jeremiah 51:20, Psalm 83, and the book of Obadiah). Let's all hold hands and sing Kumbaya and wait to be whisk off to heaven, where God is white, the angels are white, Jesus is white, and obviously the people that were enslaved and dehumanized will be servants just like in the good old days that were gone with the wind, but are returning rapidly.

My late maternal grandmother (1920 - 2008) told me about that when I was a child. Her grandparents had been slaves.
You all realize that in the grand scheme of things (time), slavery really wasn't that long ago? 🤔😧

Thanks to my ancestor's, who shoulders and foot prints, I strive in ,today! They prepared for us what they could spare from almost nothing! My honor goes to " them all" for their sacrifices! Amen...let us pick up and follow suit! Hmm...

Maybe because they're teaching them stuff like " political science". Rather than that what is needful.
