That dude so gets it. If you get what's going there you'll be right next to him doing the same thing & embracing / enjoying some great shit happening. Haha
This has to be one of my favorite videos on the internet. Spencer's collared tank top, the flower guitar, Zach going apeshit, the two girls awkwardly headbobbing behind Spencer, all the unenthusiastic camermen, and of course, afro glasses bro with the front backpack jamming out by Zach.
im deeply grateful for the digital reproduction of this performance and for how we're all able to experience even a fraction the same euphoria that must've filled that room, even after commenting 5 years ago this still hits pretty hard for me. thank you Spencer Seim and Zach Hill, your music got me through some pretty tough times. Best of luck to you guys wherever you are
Polyrhythm and thrashing together at its best. Zach Hill sounds like Elvin Jones and Rashied Ali together, on speed! The guitarist is awesome! These guys are technical with a thrashing groove.
zach's cymbal stack from this era is like a fuckin eldritch horror beyond human comprehension. what kind of madman creates such an infernal machine. sounds great!
Really pleased by my personal story arc of loving hella before death grips then seeing DG start and Zack get the credit and attention as an artist he truly deserves
maskseverywhere holy shit, can't believe you have got the same profile pic as me, you must be thinking the same as well and thinking you were the only person cool enough haha, i noticed you had a 'dopethrone' pic in your background as well, i was recently listening to that, crazy. we must be the only ppl on youtube with this pic perhaps and met on here
sometimes I wonder if theres something wrong with my head. Because...I feel that this music really makes me feel relaxed in a weird way even though its so claustrophobic and spastic.
There's a comforting progression that takes place. I don't get to write code much these days, but when I do, it's usually to Hella. Gets me in the zone for concentrating.
Best night of my life was standing two feet from the stage, with our dear departed friend Nasty Tones, while Hella played these songs from their first album at Capitol Garage in Sac in about 2002. Shit was bonkers. The whole ride home Nasty and were going off about unreal this music was.

Been a long time since I first reunited with my cousins after graduating from a crazed and insane high school (where i was introduced to Death Grips which led me to getting to know Zach Hill and his aggressive drumming history).
I fucking miss live Hella performances. I took my cousin who was a musician like me, but more had more of a commercial style of making music. I was just interested in seeing new ideas & what I haven't heard before. I think being experimental is a stage that any musician who wants to be different should go through & stick around until they find their own concentrated well defined idea & sound. My cousin was all about the Incubus, Weezer, your basic alternative rock comfort zone. He didn't get what Hella was doing at all, haha. He got a head ache & said never again.
+CULTmk My two cents: Even from a non-fanboy standpoint, most of their albums sound very different. "No 666" had a six person band, keyboards, and vocals. Their first album was a split between the two members of the band with chiptune-ish/glitch sounds, especially on Hill's half of the record. "Bitches Ain't Shit" had keyboards and noisiness, tracks with no drums and/or guitar. I think they get written off because most people aren't interested in the intensity, I'd argue that they have no less variety (if not far more variety) than most bands do but their style is just way more in-your-face so it SEEMS like less variety. Also, I can see fans writing it off because of how big Zach Hill is now and his approach to music now. This video is from way back when Hella was much less known in comparison. No matter what, these guys did it right.
@@cn1506 Another reason why they're written off may be that the production on many of the records besides Hold Your Horse Is isn't that great. A lot of their other recordings are much more harsh and cluttered making them less accessible.
this song... uh ...we wanted to, uh, this song, uh, (intro guitar bends start)
It's more like "this, uh, we wanted to tell you, uh, this song.../bends all the strings on his guitar/"
That always frickin gets me 😂
Seeing it written out made me laugh
BITE THE BUTTER!
BITE THE BUTTER
A: Bite the butter.
B: you wanna bite the butter?
C: Were going to bite the butter.
D: this song, uh, we’d really like to, uh, (intro starts).
the absolute best way to start any song in any concert, ever.
E: All of the above.
BITE THE BUTTER!

he is crying too 6:06 xdddd

I love how Spencer starts talking but interrupts himself with his own playing. hahaha

William Scerbo seriously a lot of cool stuff going on. I miss shows like this.
Afro Glasses Bro is my spirit animal. Straight up mirrored my expression the whole video through
Same dude
It's a frontpack

Zach Hill is like a drumming nomad - travelling from band to band to lend his badassness.
TetrisClock Death Grips is basically the eclipse put to audio
Zach is a special one
all drummers are like that, unfortunately
the guy with the glasses is literally the best thing ever we need more people to be that excited about music
I love watching people try to dance to math rock.
Marcus Spitz link pls
Marcus Spitz please send link
if this math rock they failed the exam
jamie wesson You obviously don’t know what math rock is then, moron
Labels labels labels
Zach Hill reminds me that I don’t need to be like any idol, I just need to be myself
I want to learn to play like him. It's not necessarily that I want to copy his talent, but i'd like to emilate it.
lol the girl in the back REALLY wants to dance along, god bless her for trying
Onstage? That's touring partners
She's a keeper for sure.
First time I heard Hella was when I saw them live opening up for System of a Down with Mars Volta. So dope.
mustve been a wild show
The last few songs must’ve been dope ashh 🤘🏼
The amount of catchy guitar licks in this song are astounding.
still watching this randomly every few weeks to be blown away at how good zach's drumming is and spencer's guitary playing
Zach Hill looks like he lives his entire life playing drums.
+Blueberry Boypussy I see you fucking everywhere. Pig Destroyer, Primitive Man, Hella, etc. You've got good taste.
He essentially does. XD
like a forrest gumo that went drumming...maybe one day in the middle of a show he says "im tired" and storm of the stage
He sounds like it, most importantly
He wasn't born, he didn't grow up, he just slid his way out of a kick-drum fully formed during one of Flatlander's recording sessions.
My favorite part of this video is just how hard the racially ambiguous kid to zach hill's left is digging the drums.
and that kid... was mc ride
idk man, he looks asian af, they are in japan after all.
listen up you nosy bitch
Deshift00 didn't you know? MC Ride can change his race
i feel weird seeing a comment made in the last hoour here i thought i was alone here
Zach Hill will go down as one of the most important musicians of this era.
radiosurgery Most overrated drummer breathing. Seems hard, isn’t. Stamina is 90 percent of the difficulty to what he plays.

When will they finish tuning their instruments?
NEVAAAAAA
@whatev ah Have you ever actually heard someone make a joke?
That is the music
Real musicians tune mid-song
I don't know why I don't get it
Lmaooo at the end when they stop, everyone starts cheering, then they start going ham again
Saw these guys with Dillinger and BTBAM about 15 years ago, it was an epic show.
Sounds like a fuckin dream, no more dillinger nowadays 😭
That must've been a legendary show holy shit
holy shit that's an amazing line up
I like that dude in the crowd with the afro and glasses lol
groovy
he looks sssoo blown away!! haha
Mason Mills Lol what a jerk, he is just enjoying it a lot and you call him retarded, i would be with the same face i think.
Frontpack for the gold. Everyone else vibrating politely.
i feel so lucky i got to see hella play in 2003, sounded and looked pretty much like this but in America. so sick

Zach never stops soloing
I remember buying this dvd when it came out. A friend borrowed it. I never saw it again 🙁
They took the best bit of this song and wanged it up 7 or more notches to make it betterer for our enjoyment.

both spencer and zach are insanely talented at their instruments

Hella did go to more members/instruments (including a bass) for at least one album. I feel the complexity of just the 2 of them was enough.
