We've never had fresh black currants. Around here everyone gets golden currants. We don't eat them, either; we planted them for the birds and they love them.
Blackcurrant jam has to be one of the absolute best out there! I'd put it up there with damson! Dehydrators are great as it creates so many new ingredients.
I might try dehydrating blackcurrants now as freezer space is limited. My dehydrator is only a cheap one so not sure it will be as efficient as yours, I will try though.👍
We started with a much cheaper dehydrator many years ago, bought on a trip to Poland, that kne you had to restock to get stuff to dry evenly, it was more effort but was still useful. I sold it when I got this one but I wish I'd kept it to do smell foods like onions as its hard to get rid of the smell!
That was so satisfying seeing them go through the whole drying process - thank you!
No probs! They do take long to dry than a lot of things. I wonder if some tiny spikes on each berry would help.
Dehydrated blackcurrants for fruit tea is good. Look forward to trying them in scones.
I've not tried them for tea! That's something I'll have to give a go. How kuchen do you put in for a cup full?
Thanks for the inspiration Kev. You can also dry the leaves and use them for a fruit tea. Now to save up for some Blackcurrant bushes.
Yeah, the leaves can be used to make a cordial as well. Very much a multi use plant!

Golden currants are ones I've not tried! The birds certainly get their fill of my blackcurrants I can tell you!
got to get my hands on some so I can try blackcurrant scones
You won't regret it!
Made blackcurrant jam for the first time this year with my new allotment. Now it looks like I will need to look at a dehydrator 😂

This is a great idea. Love the thought of blackcurrant scones. Do the dried blackcurrants keep the intense flavour when stored?
Yeah they seem to keep their flavour. Everyone comments on how strong they are if they try them just out the jar!
