Sup, I’m Mr.lore. I’m gonna explain everyhting you asked here, but it’s obviously spoilers. The game delivers the story kinda weird though so it might be good to just read this instead. It’s long tho.
The player is a mercenary piloting an Armored Core (AC) unit, wich is most of the Robots in this video. There are others like MTs wich are most enemies in the game and LCCs. This is where the line ”Power without purpose“ Is relevant because you are a guy in a 10.3 meter tall machine that can kill thousands and you are fighting because you are essentially an indentured servant to a guy named Walter.
The game takes place on the planet Rubicon 3, where a substance called Coral is found. This is like spice in Dune. Your magical space oil/drug. This substance is also highly flammable and it spreads out in giant ocean-like waves even over space. During this Corporations like Balam and Arqebus (who also make the parts for the ACs) and the Rubicon Research Institute (RRI, these guys basically legally owned the planet) settled there and ended up profiting from selling Coral. However this eventually ended up causing the Fires of Ibis, a catastrophe where the giant Coral mass that had spread over the galaxy during the time the Humans spent extracting it was set on fire and several star systems were fucking razed, the line $after cataclysm divided some“ is probably about this. So the Planetary Closure Administration (PCA) was founded to completely prevent anyone from ever entering or leaving the planet again. The miners who survived the Fires of Ibis became the native population of Rubiconians, who were chilling on their planet and trying to deal with the environmental damage. A long time later the Corps just illegally breach the PCA blockade and end up mining again. They also start committing genocide against the Rubiconians, who use the slogan ”forged in ash we fight as one“, so this song is also from a Rubicon Liberation Front (RLF) perspective since that’s a line. Then a bit later the player (known only as C4-621, C4 standing for Generation 4 of piloting augmentation since you can’t pilot the ACs normally, you need your whole system linked up) is sent there by their mercenary handler Walter to work for the corps. You do a bunch of missions and eventually you make contact with a being called Ayre. This is where the game is kinda weird about the delivery: basically the Coral are actually living, intelligent creatures who we are burning for energy. This is also where the part ”Even Fire has a will to survive“ comes in, because the flammable Coral colonies are actually whole civilizations fighting for survival.
After that you choose how to proceed, fight for the RLF, help Walter destroy the Coral completely so there won’t be another catastrophe, or help the AI Allmind wich is meant to help Mercenaries find jobs to improve Coral augmentation technology (C4 augments like the MCs for example use coral to enhance the users mental abilities, that’s likely where Ayre came from, she’s the Coral in your cybernetics) so we can live in peace with the Coral, this last option combined with the Coral basically being a giant connected group is also where the Skynet, Hivemind and the machines being alive vibe comes from.
