    I heard somewhere that Ishtar didn't just want to marry Gilgamesh because he fell in love with him. In fact, the reason why Gilgamesh is a demigod in the first place is because the King of Uruk is always meant to marry a goddess to consolidate the rule of the Gods over the people. So, in that regard, Gilgamesh wasn't some crush Ishtar decided to pursue on a godly whim. By all accounts, Gilgamesh was Ishtar's rightful betrothed.
    Gilgamesh didn't just reject her because she has a terrible history (heheh) with men, but because by rejecting a goddess, control of Heaven over the Earth is severed, effectively establishing mankind as independent and free from the Gods and capable of determining its own future (with Gilgamesh leading it, of course).
    That act declaring humanity's independence is part of what makes him a Heroic Spirit. He accomplished this dream of self-determination and elevated humanity to new heights and possibilities before dying. It's important to remember that Fate explores the question "What does it mean to be a Hero (and furthermore, what does it mean to be a King)?" A Hero isn't always a rightful figure who does everything right and can never do any harm. A hero simply has to embody the dreams and hopes of mankind, whether those dreams or hopes end for better or worse.
    And in Gilgamesh's case, you can always argue whether his actions worked for the former or the latter.
    Good video as always!

      Damn, that's really deep. Just imagine what the world of the Fate series would be like if Gilgamesh had just accepted his role as the keystone and married Ishtar. Humanity, even after 4000 years would be so different and would likely still be subservient to the gods.

      In Fate, this is the case.
      However, Inanna is not the one who would be used if a king were to sever ties and rebel. Gilgamesh denied her hand in marriage because of her past, however pledged servitude to her instead, as he was already performing as such to her. Note that this is after Humbaba is slaughtered, in which Inanna is a war deity. She favors the strong, the ones who create bountiful harvests, the ones who can fuck the best, you name it and she'll probably go for it; she is a paradoxical yet lovable goddess.
      The issue with Gilgamesh taking control and humans operating on their own is that heaven operated alongside Earth, not "Heaven > Earth," although that is true in terms of.. everything. The gods held the ability to make mankind slaves, they literally lived within the cities that mankind inhabited, in which Anu was in Eanna (the time period of Inanna taking his domain instead of sharing it hasn't occurred yet). The gods have the Tablets of Destiny and the Mes, in which humanity is simply nothing but ants before them. Gilgamesh never willingly went against the gods unless there was a god on his side, or few, that would prevent divinity from coming down and slapping him (it took Enlil's anger and him killing the bull for Enkidu the cunt to be killed, though--).
      The core of Sumerian belief was that you were originally a slave to the gods, but you are now walking with them as man, and they are to still be worshiped, but you are to have a life. Gilgamesh never fought this, as he was like Enki; always able to loophole and still remain evaded criticism unless it was literally impossible. His arrogance and being a tyrant, however, was what made people dislike him, same to Inanna. Inanna is a hypocritical, power-hungry, war-mongering goddess; she is more akin to Nergal than anyone else, and Nergal's name is literally "The Great Pride of Uruk."
      Personally, what he did wasn't go against the gods at all; his journey was orchestrated by Enki the entire time and Enki literally handed him knowledge via the Sage in the Underworld. There's nothing in Gilg's epic that supports the idea of rebelling against the gods in totality, which is where Nasu took creative liberties. I won't fault him for that, as he did a decent job with it, however the culture would have been changed a lot more than it was if humanity saw itself as superior to the gods (See Sargon of Akkad).
      Gilgamesh performed the action of learning what it meant to live, and learned how to be immortal in a more metaphorical sense. The Epic of Gilgamesh took centuries to write and is in three to four, if I recall correctly, written languages (Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian, I forget the last one if there was one). Sha Nanqa Imuru was an edit of a previous version of his Epic; people worked tirelessly when writing to ensure that the heart of the story and the message would not be forgotten to time, and it looks like it worked out fine. Gilgamesh attained his immortality in the ashes of clay and in the hearts of readers, as well as aiding one of the most divine cities known to mankind (see Enmerkar) to be recalled for many a millennia. What better way to go, loved by the gods and a teacher to man.

    • @toastedtoast6126
      @toastedtoast6126 5 років тому +40

      Yes. There are many differences between our history and the nasuverse, but i say that the nasuverse depiction of gilgamesh in the animes doesn't fit the irl Epic of Gilgamesh. I think the nasuverse version is fitting in a way that the originals can't quite compare. And i find the anime's depiction of Gilgamesh extremely interesting, more so than the depiction irl. The story is far more 'grand' and i find the contrast between Gilgamesh's actions and his personality/mannerisms etc. in the anime and his time as the king of Uruk hugely intriguing.

    • @solo8324
      @solo8324 5 років тому +18

      @@toastedtoast6126 Of course, which is fine, however even with Nasu's logic in place with Ishtar's domains and whatnot, it would make no sense that denying her the wedding would present an idea of rebelling against the gods, as she's still the most, as Nasu puts it, "spoiled," a trait the gods really.. didn't partake in. The story of Gilgamesh in Fate is also one that I do enjoy, as it seems to elaborate more on what he did from time to time, but also tends to break when looking for specifics (but that's what happens when you combine three religions into one). Personally, his arrogance has been shown a lot more than in the Epics, which serves the nasuverse well as the epic is centered around that. Now the one thing I'm confused on is Enkidu, however we'll cross that bridge when it comes to it.
      As per it being fitting, it does indeed fit with what Nasu attempts to perform with it, however the funny thing that one notices is that the Epic itself focuses on several points and tries to cram them all in a sort of odd mannerism, whereas the nasuverse focuses only really on his ruling time to Enkidu's death, afterward the writing simply sums up the ending.

    It's important to note that when studying myth, what defines a "hero" changes from era to era. While the historical Gilgamesh was a batshit insane crazy person who would have been given a healthy dose of Freedom and Democracy today, back then achieving what he did and defying the gods was like the pinnacle of self-accomplishment. Being "good" wasn't what defined a hero. Being "great" was. Same with Heracles.

    I took mythology in high school and we learned a similar but very different story. Like Gilgamesh was never a terrible king but did sleep around. We were told that Enkidu was made from water and clay to rival Gilgamesh but he wasn't a clay man, he had flesh and blood just like Gilgamesh. When news of Enkidu running around in the wild got back to Gilgamesh he decided to have him seduced by this women. After Enkidu was seduced his animal friends would run away from him because he was no longer pure, starting the beef between Gilgamesh and Enkidu. They fought but neither could win so they became best buds and started ganking gods together. They built some giant door and Enkidu received capital punishment for it, prompting Gilgamesh's existential crisis and pursuit of immortality.
    Update: I should've just watched the rest of the video he tells us its "Fates" mythology, not the real one.

      It's true , Bryan.
      That been said , Fate Prototype do exist in Nasu Multiverse and Proto Gil had a different wild card.
      Proto Gil have GoB , but more limited , he is primarily a fighter (in short , he fights like Archer EMIYA) , while his Enuma Elish is a diluve.
      That been said , Proto Saber Arthur had a more powerful version of Excalibur. It works with seals , by breaking the seals , his shot is stronger , but consumes more and takes more time.

    • @kuroneko106
      @kuroneko106 5 років тому +15

      While is true that Proto Gil's Bab-Ilu (GoB) is more limited (10 golden orbs) is better for melee combat, at difference of Archer Gil whose GoB works in a more static way (stand and shot at long range). Proto Gil fights more like Emiya Shirou (UBW - Shirou vs. Gil) than Archer EMIYA, EMIYA uses multiple weapons to fight (swords, shields, bows, etc.) but he rarely will spam them like Shirou in his fight against Gil.
      Proto Gil like Proto Arthur are more faithful to their original legends, so he is no a owner like Archer Gil but a Grand Master (and demigod), he defeats Proto Arthur in melee combat (I'm not sure if in Protoverse Heroic Spirit's parameters and skills are still limited by the classes. Proto Berserk gives low info) but is defeated in their clash of NP, as you stated Proto Arthur's NP is stronger.
      Not even one of the enemies of Proto Arthur are in the same league of Proto Gil, he is the original Hercules, fighting epic monsters, gigants, divine beasts, etc. not having EA nor Enki (Enki manifestation of his legend not a weapon he had in his life like Vlad Dracul's Vampire Form) but just normal weapons and a good fella.

    I know its probably just my inner fangirl who is talking, but I always saw Gil as a good being. His child version and adult version are so kind and responsible, they do have his sadism but no one can deny that they are both good.
    So i just see Archer Gil as a teenager who hasn't matured and is overwhelmed by both of his hormones and magical power. If I'm not wrong, Gil's body is mortal, human, however his powers are ones of a god, that's why, as his power developped, he had a "teenager crisis" as his godly side was overwhelming his human side. As said in the video, gods have a different perspective of things, for him, rape, murder or any of his horrible actions are normal.
    Later on, I think that the fight against Enkidu has drained most of the power/magic he had, allowing him to regain control over his action and see things more clearly.
    It would explain the sudden change in his behavior, and him suddenly caring for the people he had hurt.
    Moreover, mabe Enkidu wasn't send just to kill Gil, but instead to kill the god part of Gil, to drain or turn off that part.
    In my point of view, after fate ccc and babylonia' singularity (fate go), I see Gil ( the real one) as someone who trully loves his people and humanity in general, he ma be rude, but he always show that he cares. Also, see how he only call some people "mongrels" and not others, I believe he only call "mongrels" human that are weak, that doesn't have the courage to do something and change their destiny, or find their prupose in their lifes.

    Worth noting that this is Fate Lore, which is a tad different from The Epic of Gilgamesh.
    In this video, it’s hard to distinguish where the narrator is referencing the actual Epic itself and Fate lore, beginning with referring to Gilgamesh as 2/3 god and 1/3 human. That’s from The Epic. Fate Gilgamesh is 1/2 human, 1/2 god.
    In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh didn't declare Enkidu his only friend.
    In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the only reason that Gilgamesh (and mankind) didn't become immortal was that the Herb of Immortality that he had obtained was eaten by a snake. But in Fate, Gilgamesh "went back and obtained the Herb of Immortality again just for the sake of collection but didn't use it".

      If watching in the order of release =fate stay night -> Fate zero -> fate stay night(UBW)(similar to stay night but a little different)-> then the movie i heavens feel
      if want to follow the timeline from start then fate zero should be watched first
      fate apocrypha doesn't relate to the above ones so its kind

      The logical start and chronologically first in the Nasu timeline is Fate/Zero. *I RECOMMEND YOU SAVE IT FOR LAST THOUGH* , it does not explain many of the complicated elements of the setting. It's by the Urobutcher, depending on your disposition I'd say to bring lots of tissues or popcorn.
      From here on out it gets a bit complicated. Studio Deen's Fate/Stay Night is not an accurate adaptation of the visual novel, it mix-and-matches elements of all of the routes. But it is also the only available anime adaptation of the Fate route.
      Unlimited Blade Works, the second route of three, is available as a Movie and a 26 episode anime (plus an OVA) and I recommend going with the anime as it has more time to flesh it all out.
      The third and final route, Heavens Feel, is a series of three movies of which only the first, Presage Flowers, is currently out.
      Emiya-san Chi kyou no Gohan is optional. It's a light-hearted cooking show and I don't quite know how it fits into the timeline.
      Carnival Phantasm is absolutely not canon. It's pure cracky slapstick comedy. It also features characters from Type-Moon's other visual novel, Tsukihime ( *WHICH DOES NOT HAVE AN ANIME ADAPTATION!* , anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar).
      There's also a sequel VN which as of right now doesn't have any planned anime adaptation, Fate/Hollow Ataraxia.
      There are also other anime and OVAs such as Fate/Extra: Last Encore, Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya (three seasons and a movie), multiple Fate/Grand Order OVAs, but they all take place in alternate universes/timelines. Last Encore does not work at all if you haven't played its game, Fate/Extra for the PSP.

    Greeting citizens, as someone versed in the original Epic, but having little knowledge of Fate's interpretation/twisting of the Epic, it is a fascinating ordeal to compare them one on one.

    3:07 The word hero is a misnomer. The translation for the word used in the original japanese Enkei translates to "Legendary Spirit" Plus the grail allows for "anti-heroes" to be summoned to it would make sense for him to be summoned anyway.

      Kiara, King Solomon and true archer Heracles both are more powerful than gilgamesh and they do not have divinity making enkidu chains useless.

      None of those servants are stronger than Gil and true archer would lose to Gil if he bothered to use Ea.

      You guys are forgetting that the Author confirmed him to be the strongest servant, maybe not the strongest archer but the strongest servant, if he is summoned in his appropriate class where he is more powerful he would deck even grand servants which is not an easy feat to say the least

    I read gilgamesh's original story when i first finished fate zero. I found it to be one of the more interesting one of the carracters in the franchise. Also, I loved enkidous character and now that i've seen an anime version of him, love him even more.
