  • Nato allies have taken part in the largest French military exercise for decades, with personnel from all domains participating in Exercise Orion.
Troops parachuted into the exercise alongside all the kit they would need for a large-scale, modern conflict.
French Joint Command has reacted to the war in Ukraine with drills of almost unprecedented scale - with 12,000 personnel involved in Exercise Orion from across Nato.

+30% of budget for the french army over the next period 2024-2029 with focus on reinforcing intelligence, special forces, cyber, space, drones, nuclear and ammunition stockpile.
The defense industry is also pushing to increase production dramatically.

Russias biggest mistake was giving the european people a reason to want to spend said money. Defense spending was previously notoriously under scrutiny in the EU.

I think we'll see much the same with the British Army and the Royal Navy - more spending in the multi-spatial defence domain. I for example, am situated on the left of the political spectrum, and have always defense spending as "draining" or symbolising "aggression". I can say with some certainty that since the Invasion of Ukraine, many moderate left-wingers in the UK, like myself, have shifted position. It's about time we spent money on mutual defence, alongside good allies like France, to protect our way of life - a democratic and free one. And I think whereas before I had seen wars like Iraq as a sign that defence spending was going to piddle away, and that NATO coalition lives were lost on ideological causes, our foreign policy is now more credible. I've changed my view - we need to prepare so as be to a credible deterent.

@@CavesAreIrrelevant It's interesting to compare perspectives. I'm also the moderate-left but in France there's a culture of "strategic autonomy" (bad memories of WWII, I guess). Nobody questions the fact that we maintain military capabilities in all domains, make sovereign decisions regarding potential use of nuclear weapons and spend tax money to support the defense industry when needed (let's say when a sector is suffering a given year). However, as weapons become more and more technological, it is necessary to think the strategic autonomy at the scale of multiple European partners. UK type 45 destroyers main armament is made of Franco-Italian Aster missiles for instance.

Important to note that France organizes this kind of exercise for preparing to lead a "NATO-type" coalition in Europe - in the event Russia goes further in the next years whereas there's an isolationist US president in the white house... Could be Turkey messing around with Greece too (US likely remaining neutral). We're bound by a full bilateral defense agreement.

I think the current plan is the British Royal Navy will take charge over all naval operations in European defence as well as all the Air Force operations in the northern Nordic countries, whereas the french as you said, will take charge of army operations. It’s seems like a promising plan seeing as both the UK and France are the two most powerful and capable militaries in Europe (not to discredit other European countries like Italy).

    • @edouardmontfort7816

@@sovkhan4359 I think there's no current plan and it's the responsibility of every nation to anticipate all scenarios, assess whether they're able to intervene in all domains and under which conditions...as well as whether they have the necessary human resources, tools, and practice to lead a coalition. Splitting tasks between nations is decided later, depending of the actual problem we face.
