Forgive the callout placement errors at around 13:00 and 21:00. I have not looked at the canvass extension module because, to be honest, there are far easier and more intuitive ways of doing this job in other software. As for the composite module behaviour, perhaps it IS for producing FAKED double exposure type images; the lack of module documentation just leaves us in the dark

What is fake about exposure blending, when it just reproduces, what the eye could see on location?

I said DOUBLE EXPOSURE - that's not exposure blending. But I'm not actually sure the module is working as intended on my mac installation; so hopefully the module documentation will clear the question up - once it arrives.

I can see a couple uses for this, but GIMP actually does this better - though if the module is improved it may be easier to use this than going over to GIMP.

In the end it's exactly the same module as the now obsolete color zones Module, except it works in linear RGB. However the effect on colors is more responsive than in color zones. It's a useful ingredient to the scene-referred workflow.

A really handy and intuitive model for sure

Thanks for providing the raw files. It really helps me follow what you do, plus I can try "what if Andy did this instead" type scenarios e.g. using sigmoid rather than filmic for example. It's a great learning aid.

Nice video Andy. Two quick tips might be when doing a mask such as your insect to maybe try to use the details mask slider. The second is that there is a curve for saturation to select based on chromaticity.. It can target and indicate the areas that eill be impacted...

Thanks Todd, much appreciated, as I always seem to forget about the details slider. I really have problems visualizing the CZ masking if that's what you are meaning.

Just discovered 'Darktable' (this morning-28-7-24) and think it's going to be a good alternative to Photoshop! A steep (very) learning curve awaits ,but I hope videos like the one I'm watching now!! will help?
    Thanks Andy.

I agree, the composite and enlarge canvas module don't belong in a raw file editor. Good demo of CE module. Thanks.

Andy, I believe that you made the second instance of the color equalizer and its adjustments without carrying over your parametric mask.

      @AndyAstbury  Місяць тому

You are correct - I didn't bother because the basic colours targeted only occur in the flower.

Thanks for the update, it's a powerful application & I feel I'm starting to get somewhere with it now. I've appreciated your videos regarding printing but I'm unsure of the settings for printing directly from Darktable. I'm not sure where you set up the paper profile as I didn't want to double up with it in both the software and the printer. Any idea what the settings should be?

Funnily enough, I've just deleted Darktable, now I will have to reinstall it.

Out of curiosity, what did you delete it in favour of ?

@@AndyAstbury well I never really used it, used rawtherapy a little bit more and watched more of your videos on it. So I guess it seemed more intuitive. I opened up darktable and the interface/panels just looked flat.

Rawtherapee is very good, but in all honesty, the multiple module instance and module masking capabilities of Darktable, make DT the vastly more flexible application.
As a Rawtherapee fan for about 5 years, no one was more sceptical of DT than me. But it only took me a few days to realise that DT offered me A LOT of answers to the many shortcomings of RT.
I still bemoan Darktables absence of a capture sharpening module a la the one in RT - which to me is the best in the business. I also dislike DT's lack of ability to use dcp profiles.
But I learned to use DT to get around these problems, one way or another, and if I had to dump one of my FOSS editors it would be RT if I'm honest.

@@AndyAstbury I'm thinking I should new start watching your 101 videos on DT.
I know you can plug RT and DT into gimp, I'm wondering if you could almost do the same with plugging them into each other. But I would highly doubt it.
I guess with your videos the DT Devs might get the hint.

I see most people recommends DT. But when I open a raw image its flat on it, but with RT its already close to jpeg/camera setting, and gives a good point to start for editing.
Can't we configure DT like that?
Whereas when RT saves image I noticed that the DPI changes, like from 370 to 72/96. Why so? Am I missing something?
