I was Christened in St Mary's in the late 60's, and used to play in the fort and fields around there as a child. I can recall hearing the bells calling people to worship on a Sunday morn, and then seeing the congregation walking up the lane to the church. So sad to see it in it's current state after vandalism in the late 70's early 80's, as it was a lovely building both inside and out.
I went as a child and the people I went with were running in a circle in and out of that bricked up tower it was a tiny tunnel you had to bend down it had an arched ceiling same shape as the arched doorway , it looked too small and I got really scared I would get stuck , I didn't scare easy as a child but I just couldn't bring myself to go through , I always regretted it afterwards
I remember going in the tower with my dad in the early 90's. Unfortunately the vandals ruined the place. The arch that was bricked up in your video was done cos people were doing drugs in the tower, plus there were safety concerns.
My mother told me that around Wood Street, it used to be called Temperance Square, something like that as no alcohol was allowed to be consumed in that area.
@@pamelafitzpatrick2717 Yeah, the whole area where the new BBC HQ is used to be called Temperance Town. A working class area. There are some awesome photos online.

Good video mate 👍🏼
Ah, cheers pal!
I think the door was bricked up so they could pour the concrete i to the tower without it going everywhere
