      There was never a rule in bowling saying that you couldn't use both hands during delivery.

The underlying story of the non-conformist breaking out ahead is always a great story, no matter the subject. This will be A bit long I'll try to shorten it as much as possible. I've never shared this with anyone. Your documentary really hit home for me. As I was little my Dad was working at the Bowlium in Montclair Calif. He was great bowler himself. He got me interested in bowling, so I started when I was 8 or so. I have Cerebral Palsey and I couldn't really walk on my own till I was 7. Being too cumbersome I had to walk to the foul line and be stationary before starting my swing. The comments and ridicule almost had Mee to quit. Fast forward.... I had practiced and practiced thousands of games. I loved the sport. Approx 100 games a week just to keep my muscle memory up plus tournaments on weekends. I won my first tournament when I was 12 (Dad was there and so proud.) my thumb was bleeding allover the place too. I had aspirations of the heavy hitters on TV now. Then I bowled I bowled I bowled. I then had shelves of trophies. I still have the league sheet of the day I was averaging higher than dad was. (Dad was so proud). So I bowled. I bowled. I went to Havasu to bowl the Pro Am during the tour stop there. I was paired up with Danny Wiseman. Never got any real encouragement from anyone at home. They thought it was too far fetched for me to really make it. I felt it. I knew I could though. Danny Wiseman, and Norm Duke and their whole crew acted as if I'd known them forever. Inviting me to dinner. Taking me to Hussongs after and making me feel welcome. I did. All the while pushing me to give it a go with all the encouragement in the world From Danny giving me one of his bowling balls to Norm explaining stuff and telling me I could, was a great step for me. I was at the point I was averaging 210 plus. Ha ha to all. Still standing at the foul line and starting my push away from there. At that time life got really hectic and busy. It took away from the time I needed to devote to bowling. And my game suffered. I almost made it. Alot of things happened between those times. I'm 56 now and it's all but a memory now. But I can tell you there's no better people on the tour than Danny and Norm.Never met Jason. I hear he's as nice as they come. The opposition to my style was huge, and my style was not well taken at first. Belmonte's story parallels my life in so many ways. I hope he continues his rein. Your documentary was great. If you made it this far, Thanks for reading. Still have that purple Nitro from Danny. Priceless to me.

    I'll call it what it is... I've fractured both my wrists. I tried, for months, to bowl one handed and I simply couldn't do it. I naturally started to bowl two handed then found out it actually was a technique real people used. It was a godsend. Without being able to bowl two handed, I literally wouldn't be out on the lanes with anything other than a house ball. This style not only has inherent benefits, it allows for those who may have prior injuries to continue to enjoy the sport!

  • @JonathanHeresOficial
    @JonathanHeresOficial 2 роки тому +91

    Bowling is much more than being able to bowl 1 handed vs 2 handed. Proof of that is that there are now so many more 2 handed bowlers and belmo is still special ... it goes way beyond how many hands you use to carry the ball during your approach (because all bowlers deliver the ball with one hand ;) ) .. In any case , Bowlers like Kris Prather, EJ Tackett and just recently Kyle Sherman winning the Cheetah Championship shows theres room for one handed bowling in the future .. Bowling is so much more: Mental Game, Tactics (making the right equipment choice, reading the lanes and reaction the right way), Tenchnique (speed, direction of rotation, etc choices) and so on ... At the end of the day if you compete in high levels theres something so much more important: Versatility and Consistency doing what you do ... The future of bowling is now much rich and diverse with the 2 handed bowling style and i cant wait to see more! Cheers!

      Thank you this is a great statement. You speak out of my heart. I bowl 40+ years now and the game constantly evolves. Thats exactly how it should be. At the end of the day the better (time to time also luckier) bowler is winning the championship. Unfortunatly some times very bad breaks stand in the way. But that makes it even more interesting. I wish everyone reading my comment some lucky breaks at best time. Good luck and peace everywhere

      Thumb bowling is leaving bowling. Your mentions only exist because that is how they trained growing up. But now most people are learning how to bowl with no thumb as either one or two handed. So as they get older and become the new PBA that is all we are going to see for the most part and the dinosaurs will retire and fall off our radar. People unwilling to adapt and change to better ways are never going to achieve the same as those willing to change.

    • @JonathanHeresOficial
      @JonathanHeresOficial 2 роки тому +2

      @@firnameweren5311 Well, i think one handed bowling will never dissapear totally, it is just phisically less strainfull. We still have to see 50, 60 and 70 years old two handed bowlers doin it everyweek in their leagues. And well ... Belmonte is arguably the best bowler ever, and he is two handed but still can be beaten by one handed bowlers from time to time. Thats the nature of the sports and i highly doubt one handed bowling will go away 100% ...

    • @XenoGuru
      @XenoGuru 15 днів тому

      @GENOSANDIEGO Honestly, it depends on the pattern and lane conditions if revs and speed will help. On house shots, it's helpful.
      Sport patterns, not always.
      Jason used to throw the ball much faster and using a lot of hook.
      Once he got on tour and started bowling the more difficult patterns, he realized he needed to learn speed/rev control. Which he did.
      No matter your style, to bowl well on tough patterns, you have to be able to hit a mark consistently.

    In the early 80s, when skateboarding started to grow from being viewed as a childish game into a professional competitor sport, there was a similar rivalry as there is one-handed vs two-handed bowlers. Tony Hawk has talked about being a kid and how he was not physically strong enough to hold onto his board while airing out of quarter pipes, so he had to adapt. He learned to "ollie" (jump without using hands) out of the swimming pools and vert ramps he skated. Older skaters would bash his new style as cheating, as gimmick, tasteless etc. Decades have now passed, and thanks to Tony's "gimmick" the sport has been totally revolutionized into what it is today. If you gate keep a sport from progressing, then you are going to watch that sport die. Sports need innovation to continue forward.

    This was a real joy to watch!
    You did a great job making this documentary!
    IMO, Belmo (and Osku) made a monumental change in the game. Not only in the physical aspect but (even more important), in the way the game is approached. It opened up new and exciting ways of making a sport that was defined as "classical" more diverse and exciting. It is groundbreaking, and there is not a greater compliment to an athlete than to say that he (or she) has influenced the way the game is played.
    Once again, you guys did a top-notch documentary! Keep up the good work!

    My respect to all champion bowlers. I was a one handed right hand thrower until one of my right hand flexor tendons ruptured in the middle of a tournament. The pro shop master drilled holes on a used 7 pound ball and managed to finish my throws frame in excruciating pain. Then, one week rest and aiming with a tennis ball to an empty water bottle at 40 feet away. I managed to do the rest of my second part tournament for a third place. My handicap worsened to 110. Then, I said byebye to competition. To return, I have to relearn two hand left handed throws from zero. Wish me luck.😊

    Great documentary. I love that there are two very distinct styles. Plus within each style every player has their own variations. It’s made the game more interesting. The yin and yang of the styles makes me appreciate the one handers more too. Guys like Prather, and Tackett are just as fun to watch. I loved bowling when I was younger but drifted away from it. I wouldn’t be watching or playing now if the two styles didn’t coexist.

    I love bowling because when it all comes down to it. Everyone has the same opportunity to achieve perfection. It's not like basketball or any other mainstream sport. We all have an equal shot at winning in any given scenario, regardless of style, delivery, speed, revolutions, etc. It's why bowling is, and always will be my favorite sport.

    I've been bowling seriously the past year and a half. I was the typical casual one hander with no thumb when I first started. I would try to imitate Tom Daughtery until one day a retired bowling coach in his 60s came up to me and said, why am I bowling like that? Told him i could never crate revs or hook with thumb in after trying years ago. He told me something very interesting. He said, well if u are doing this for fun, keep doing it. If u plan to get better or join a league, try two handed approach. He then said, there's only a couple of guys on tour who bowl one hand no thumb which means its very hard to master. Meanwhile, there's LOTS of two handers on tour who successfully master their technique. Ever since that day, I made the switched and never looked back. Mind you, he was your typical old school one hander but he understood the new wave and how I would benefit better by jumping on it.
    With that said, even as a two hander, EJ Tackett is still my favorite bowler. His power and release is phenomenal!

    Great documentary, I first started bowling in November of 2020 during my junior year of high school last year and learned 2 handed bowling by just watching slow motion videos of Belmo and my friend showing me the style a few times and last year I achieved my high score of 278 and and high series of 724 (278, 232, 214). I'm gonna continue bowling in college and definitely join some leagues when I am older, bowling, Belmo, Brad and Kyle, Darren Tang, and the entire House Bowling channel changed my life for the better.

    I am also a 1 hander. While i really dont care how you bowl, you do you. But i will say the one handed greats will always have a place in my heart. It is muchhh easier to get power and revolutions 2 handed, so when you have a great & powerful 1 hander i do think its more special. Tommy Jones, Bill oneil, Norm Duke, Weber, Prather, EJ Tackett, obviously i could go on and on. There just more special to me i guess. But to each his own. I hope we will have more 1 handed greats in the future. And i think theres plenty who are already there.

    I love watching Jason i love Simo I started 1 handed but just couldnt figure out the style because i honestly just thought the thumb did more. I went to 2 handed for about 6 months until after a long practice session i felt a sharp pain and i was limping. I had pinched a nerve around my hip and it was at that point thanks to a friend that was willing to coach me i switched back to 1 handed. Im a bigger guy not just height but weight im not a slim person like Jesper so to get lower for 2 handed i think i was really putting alot of strain on my back. 1 handed has been amazing and ive seen my avg jump up 40 pins. At the end of the day it doesnt matter the style just enjoy what youre doing and do what works best. No one likes losing so if you bowl better a different style then do that and win.

As a one handed league bowler who through pro lessons & allot of practice games per week resulted in much success, I have no issue with two handed bowlers. I put a lot into it just like anyone else can for the love of the game. To each his own. I was taught several different hand positions and I’ve had to use them to adapt as the game went on. This point where I’m a little older I may need to go to two handed ball and I’m not sure yet but I won’t count it out. Hats off to all bowlers no matter what your style is because it’s great for the game!

Those men helped me become a better bowler, a better competitor, and honestly a better person. Jason is like Tiger, MJ, TB12, Ronaldo, men who have completely revolutionized their sports by being different and not apologizing for it. What a great watch! I started really picking up bowling while working at an AMF (free games!) a handful of years ago and I found that one-handed bowling left me really frustrated for two reasons: 1) I had a knee injury as a kid and it didn't heal right, leaving my right-foot lead-up really sloppy and painful and 2) I was tired of being limited to 9/10lb balls. So I got really frustrated one night, grabbed the largest 16lb ball off the house rack I could find and chucked it! Instant love, and I've been developing my throw ever since.
    It was always funny seeing the leaguers come up and watch me because they'd never seen two-handed bowling before, and they'd always tell me I had to "correct" it. I wasn't very good, but I was new to the sport and I wasn't ready to go back to the method of throwing that was hurting me and ruining the fun of learning how to play. My pro-shop guy, bless his heart, hated my throw, but still did his best to drill me something that worked for me and I still have that 14lb ball today.
    I'm right handed, but lead with the left foot and hand, which attracts attention. It's been rough sometimes, but plenty of people seem to just be gawkers when it comes to seeing it the first time. They've never thought about changing up their own throw, and maybe it inspires them a little. I'm glad to see that more people are open to the two-handed throw. I'm by no means a professional, and my throw seems to change every other month as I find new ways to improve, but that's what I like about it!

    This is just a serious problem inside the bowling community, the whole point of the game is to roll the ball and knock over ten pins, who cares about using two hands? The two handed style is just so you can support the weight of the ball, have a little more control and some people say it generates more power, revs etc, and it is true. But at the end of the day, you still have to be accurate just like one handers, in fact, one handers sometimes have even better accuracy then two handers. Some people just simply refuse to move on because they think this style basically made the old school one - handed style useless compared to those who are two handed, and it’s unfair that they have better ball speed etc. But actually, nobody said it ain’t allowed, so I think if haters gonna hate, they might as well focus on their bowling game then making those hate comments behind our backs. Just like Belmo said, “ Why would I bowl like you if I’m beating you?”

    11:00 there wasn't enough room to say "After joining the tour 3 years later, to date Jason Belmonte has racked up 29 PBA titles, while Paluszek has yet to capture a title, remaining a journeyman action bowler"
    the best way to kill something is to hinder process, and that's why bowling is dying in the US. I've tried bowling 2 handed. I can't do it well at all. Doesn't mean I don't like it or think it should be illegal. Truth be told, I'm surprised no one has tried to legislate 2 handed bowling out of the game, in THIS specific manner: Only one hand may be on the ball during the downswing. Then again, I'm NOT surprised, given the intelligence level of the anti-two handed argument.

    I used to be a one handed bowler, mostly throwing plastic, bent wrist, and no hook. I got a reactive ball and still couldn't get much of a hook going, and in my practice, I pulled a tendon in my hand and couldn't hang on. I had seen Belmo and figured I would give it a shot. The early attempts weren't that great, I could hook it, but I didn't have much control. As I went on, I got more and more accurate and I started learning how to shape the ball to different oil patterns, and I started to really love the sport. I went from a 110 average bowler to a 180 average bowler, and a high score of 204 to a high score of 276.
    Lot of purists think it's easy, but believe me when I say it isn't. Yeah, anyone can go out and get a few lucky strikes with it, but actually getting repeatable results is just as difficult as one handed. It might even be a little more difficult, because there's more moving parts to go wrong, get your wrist angle slightly off, or too much flick and you will go from hitting the pocket to sniping the 7 pin.

Less than a year into my bowling career I average 190 with my own style I’ve made from studying different areas of pros. Different styles work for different people, everyone should bowl how they want, just don’t be destructive 😂

But two-handed brings a different style that allows others to find a new path and development. They got a lot of revs and some had the speed too. I don't get the big deal about the 2 handers, they are basically "palmballers" with a stabilizing hand. I was taught at age 7 to do one handed. Bowling one handed has the advantage of more precision and accuracy, but bowling 2 handed has the advantage of generating more power and a higher rev rate.
    Having a lot of power on the ball is super popular among people. When I was a kid, the other kids were overly obsessed with using more power. My father had to redirect them, and encourage them to throw the ball slower, but with more precision, using me as an example (even though I never averaged better than 140 back then).

    I began bowling 2 handed after I broke my thumb in a baseball game, and while I agree it's a lot easier to keep your hand behind the ball doing it 2 handed the actual mechanics is so much more difficult because of the athletics required, the power your generating is more like the power being generated by a baseball pitcher. Every fiber of muscle from your legs to your core gets used.
